Muir Woods National Monument is a must-see destination on any visit to the San Francisco Bay Area. Just a short drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, the protected nature reserve is home to one of the world’s last remaining coastal redwood forests.
Choose from a morning or afternoon departure and make your way to the meeting point in Union Square or Fisherman's Wharf. Stop at a vista point for a fantastic perspective of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, and wind through the rolling hills of the Marin Headlands to arrive at Muir Woods. Stroll along forest paths surrounded by the giant redwood trees.
If you've opted to add a bike ride, meet in Fisherman's Wharf. You'll ride from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito before taking the bus to Muir Woods.
After Muir Woods, take a short drive to the artistic bayside village of Sausalito. Capture photos of the San Francisco skyline during a stroll along the waterfront, pop into one of the many art galleries and grab a cappuccino or ice cream at a café (own expense).
Your tour concludes with a bus ride back to the departure points, or the Sausalito ferry back.

Our driver/guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable and gave a lot of information. The trip to Muir woods was lovely. Such a peaceful place looking at all the trees. We were given 90 minutes there but could have used more time to do a hike. Then on to Sausalito. Only 60 minutes which was not enough. Wish it had been longer. But overall a very nice trip.

Driver was wonderful. Informative and entertaining. I felt the price was a bit high for basically a ride to Muir for 1.5hr walk and a drop off at Sausalito. We took the ferry back which was very nice
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad you enjoyed the driver and the experience, and we appreciate your comments regarding value and pricing.

First off our driver was funny as all heck.
His two recommendations were spot on.
Mrs wanted to see redwoods and you’ll see redwoods. She’s happy and that improved my quality of life. Lol
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you for the great review! We’re glad you enjoyed the experience (and the redwoods delivered!). We hope to see you again soon.

This tour is a combo of visit to Gold Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, and other site
If you are looking for a family trip with easy walk, this one is good.
If you are expert in hiking or wanna spend more times to see Muir Woods, it’s better to choose another one
In gist, it’s still a good tour for recommendation.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Thank you for your feedback! Glad you enjoyed the tour and found it family-friendly. We appreciate the recommendation!

Overall the experience was very good! George the driver was very personable and informative! His knowledge was encyclopedic! We could've spent more time in Sausalito, but then again there is next time.

This was a great tour. Our driver/tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly enough. I just wish we had more time in Sausalito. We only had one hour to eat and explore.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Thank you for your feedback! We're glad you enjoyed the tour and appreciate your suggestion about spending more time in Sausalito.

Wonderful trip to Muir Woods and Sausalito with our bus driver/ tour guide, George. George was a delight as he shared information and stories about the areas we drove through on our way to and from both locations. We learned so much about San Francisco and the bay area. My 84-year old mother and I decided to take the ferry option back to San Francisco and loved that as well.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Thank you for your kind review! We're delighted you and your mother enjoyed the tour with George and the ferry ride back to San Francisco.
Sujit_V, May 2026
We were at designates pick up point 10 minutes before at 10.30am but no bus came and started following up at 10.42 am with Viator help line. They asked us to goto another stop we reached there at 11.14am but there's no bus here either. Need to make sure we gte this tour at least tomorrow.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience. Our team is looking into this issue.
EuGene_L, May 2026
Great tour, nice narration by the driver. We would have appreciated more time in Sausalito vs the more than adequate time at Muir Woods.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Thank you for your feedback! We're glad you enjoyed the tour and narration. We'll certainly take your suggestion about spending more time in Sausalito into consideration.
tjnoronha, May 2026
Muir Woods was amazing and enough time, but you really need to make Sausalito minimum 2 hours so you can enjoy lunch and the town. It should be part of the tour you shouldn't have to catch a ferry on your own.
Response from Host, May 2026
Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad you enjoyed Muir Woods and appreciate your suggestions about spending more time in Sausalito. We’ll be sure to share your comments with our team.
PAM_O, May 2026
We really enjoyed the tour. It was the most convenient way to see these places. Muir Woods is beautiful. The bus was nice and always waiting. Sadly, the ferry company went out of business so we took the bus home. They gave a fast refund for that portion and we ride the ferry later at sunset.
A nice way to die c the day!
Response from Host, May 2026
Thank you! We’re so glad you enjoyed the tour and your visit to Muir Woods. We appreciate your understanding regarding the ferry and are happy you still got to enjoy a beautiful sunset ride!
Heather_L, May 2026

My trip was cancelled and I was not told. I waited at the pickup point unaware of the cancellation. We were very disappointed as we had a plane to catch that evening and were unable to reschedule.
Response from Host, May 2026
We’re very sorry for the cancellation and the lack of communication. We understand how disappointing and frustrating this must have been, especially with your travel schedule. Thank you for your feedback.
srinidhi_s, May 2026
I was not given an official ticket after rescheduling a trip with Viator and the numbers given on the call didn’t add up to what I was actually charged, and therefore leaving this review on an older trip, where I’m allowed to ‘write a review’. I took the trip with my parents from SF to Muir Woods and Sausalito at 1 PM from Pier 33 on May 9, 2026. We were about 12 people in the van. The driver claimed he was german and had been in the US for 30 years. Over the rear view mirror, he put up what seemed like a laminated note stating that in the US hospitality industry, paying a 20% tip was customary. As someone that’s based in the US, this isnt true and foreigners may very well feel forced to comply since it comes across as a legal requirement.
The trip began, our driver was jovial and things were totally normal until he prepared to park the van at Sausalito when he explicitly began announcing about how customers typically don’t have cash on them to tip him and he would totally hate for that to be any of us, so he parked by the Bank of America ATM so we would all make sure to withdraw cash in the 1 hour that we’d spend in Sausalito to tip him. As someone that came well prepared with cash to pay a tip, I thought his demand was inappropriate and it felt kind of like a shake-down.
When we left Sausalito, most people took the ferry and didn’t even care to return to the van probably because they didn’t want to have to bother with his demands. It was 5 of us in the end. When we got down, he pulled up over the curb. As my parents and I got off, he quickly got down to the sidewalk, came up to me and asked who was handling the tip. I said I was. He stood less than a foot away, looking down at me demanding a 20% tip as was stated in the van and made racist comments against us. I refused and began explaining that I disagree with his laminated note. He began raising his voice when another white bystander stopped by on the sidewalk to defend my parents and I; and confirmed that tipping was voluntary and apologized to my parents for having to listen to racist comments. I wonder how such drivers/members are part of the Viator team cause this was a horrendous experience to what was an otherwise normal trip. I strongly advise against choosing to plan trips with this company.

Hello srinidhi_s
We are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience on your tour to Muir Woods. However, the review you posted does not refer to a tour operated by Gray Line San Francisco.
Although we have been operating tours to Muir Woods for many years and have received excellent reviews, we did not operate the Muir Woods PM tour on May 9. In addition, Gray Line San Francisco does not depart for Muir Woods from Pier 33. We offer two departure locations: Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf, at 2805 Leavenworth Street. There are other operators that offer Pier 33 as a departure location, but Gray Line San Francisco does not.
Based on the details mentioned in your review, we understand your frustration, and this is certainly not something we would ever allow to happen on a Gray Line San Francisco tour. However, as mentioned above, it appears that your review refers to a tour taken with another operator.
Thank you.

Awesome tour guy !! Knowledgeable, friendly and good driver. Both Muir Woods and Sausalito are “musts” in a visit to San Francisco
Response from Host, May 2026

Viola_R, May 2026
The overall trip was great. A must see if coming to San Francisco. Our driver/tour guide was wonderful.
Response from Host, May 2026
Hi Viola! Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the trip and your guide. Hope to see you again in San Francisco!
Amy_P, May 2026
We were picked up at one of the designated locations, but then had to make our way back to our car on our own (2 miles away—which is not insignificant after the hike in the woods with two 12-year-olds). I presumed a pick-up point is also a drop-off. Not so, in this case. I recommend making that more obvious in the description. That was an unforeseen—and ultimately more expensive—challenge than necessary.
The driver was engaging and made his script more interesting than just reciting a well-worn narrative. He did a good job.
I have enjoyed other Viator excursions I’ve done in the past, so will give it another shot, but this was disappointing logistically.
That said, Muir Woods and Sausalito are worth any time you can spend.
Response from Host, May 2026
Dear Amy_P
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.
We’re glad to hear that you found the driver engaging and that he did a great job making the tour more interesting.
Regarding the drop-off, we apologize for the inconvenience. The drop-off points for this tour should be the same as the pick-up locations, so you should not have had to walk that far back to your car. It is possible that there may have been some confusion with an alternative stop, but our standard procedure is to drop guests off at the same designated departure locations.
I will review the vehicle route with our Operations Director to better understand what happened. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience this caused, especially after the hike with your children.
We appreciate your comments, and we’re glad you still enjoyed Muir Woods and Sausalito.
Nancy_V, Apr 2026
Our driver was fun and knowledgeable in sharing information pertinent to the tour. We especially appreciated his genuine interest in, and enthusiasm for preserving both the history of the area and in the fate of the trees. He was very clear on when things needed to happen.
Response from Host, May 2026

Don was a great guide. Had lots of information. We went on an early tour so a lot less people for the Muir Woods part. Wish we had more time at the view site for the bridge.
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Hi Lisa! Thanks for your feedback! Glad you enjoyed Don and the early tour. We appreciate your note about the Golden Gate viewpoint and will keep it in mind 👍

Response from Host, Apr 2026
Hi Steve! Thank you for the helpful tip and feedback! We’re glad everything worked out well with your timing.

Melissa_W, Mar 2026
Our driver/guide was very nice. We felt very safe going up and down the road to Muir Woods. He drove carefully and safely and provided us with a lot of interesting information along the way in relation to all of the things we were driving past. The charter bus was very clean and comfortable. Only issue was that the seat belts were quite stiff and difficult to put on and take off.
Otherwise, it was a great experience!
We also enjoyed our time in Sausalito and the ferry ride back to Pier 39.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Hi Melissa! Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad you enjoyed the tour, our driver, and the Sausalito stop. We appreciate your note about the seat belts and will take it into consideration.
