We really enjoyed this interesting, low-key, less crowded tour (as compared to tours at the Colosseum and Vatican Museum and St. Peter's!) The castle has a fascinating history and the views from the top level are wonderful - as is the cafe on the roof top as well.

Castle San Angelo requires a tour guide, without that you have no idea what’s the history within those walls and the young lady who guided us was fenomenal, she was very knowledgeable and passionate for the history. My husband and I love it!

I’m giving it a 4-star because when we got there, the tour guide was not there. Then she arrived almost at the time we were scheduled to start the tour. She was very informative and taught us many things about the castle and about San Angelo. I enjoyed it in overall.

Sylvia!! Our tour guide was AMAZING!! She was soo knowledgable, warm, kind, and very caring. She catered to all of our questions and comments and gave us so much information on Castel. Wonderful tour guide!! The only downside was the GOOGLE MAPS location to checking in before the tour guide. It made us go around the castel and if it weren’t for us using our common sense, we would have been lost and late to the tour. The check in place was right infront of Castel’s gate.

Tour guide showed up a little late and my tour was supposed to the be express 1 hour and I was paired with a couple that had a 2 hour tour, so I had to leave early as I had another appointment to get too. Plan enough time.

This tour was great! Our guide Agnes was great! This was one of the best tours of our trip! The Castel, is amazing! We saw other tourist struggling to wind their way around the gorgeous castle. The time wasted trying to figure it all out on your own can't be reclaimed. Go with a tour guide. If you can afford a private tour guide, great! But don't go alone! You'll miss so much!

Worthwhile but...

I previously visited this site with a friend and did the mobile-guided tour, which was fine and cheap, but when experiencing this guided tour with my wife I found I got a lot more information from it and a wider perspective. We had booked the express tour because we only had a short time free and didn't want to be spending too long here. However, on the day we found that we had been merged with a longer tour due to numbers and the tour was further prolonged due to some Italians booking the wrong tour. Credit to the guide for managing to do the tour in English and Italian at the same time, but the consequence of this was that it took much longer than it should have done. Although we could have left early, we would then have missed parts of the castle which would otherwise have been guided, so we were a little disappointed by this.

So much history, very interesting, well worth it

Our tour guide Valeria was amazing. We signed up for a group tour but it turned out no one else signed up and we had a private tour! Valeria was incredibly knowledgeable about so much history regarding the Castel Sant'Angelo. So many details and interesting facts we wouldn't have learned about. It made the tour so interesting. 100x better than just wandering around on our own. Loved it!

Alec was a fantastic tour guide, knowledgeable, articulate, entertaining, passionate about sharing his knowledge with his guests. You will learn more than just the history of this amazing building, but also gain an understanding of how things came to be. I've heard before how ancient buildings were looted over time for building materials. Alec preferred the term "Recycled" which is a more intelligent, non- judgemental view of this practice. The tour takes you to the top of the building for an unparalleled panoramic view of the city - spectacular! Taking this tour will enhance your experience and appreciation of Castel Sant' Angelo tenfold!
