Absolutely incredible. I had initially booked this because I really wanted to hike the pipiwai trail and you CAN do that if you want, however its almost 6 hrs to go around all Haleakala so, you will be spending the majority of your time driving to the 2 hour hike, and then driving back. Keone asked us what our goals were and we decided it would be best to let a local tell us what he recommends and I'm so glad we did. We didn't hike pipiwai, and instead we got to go swimming in 2 different waterfalls, 1 was almost private with no one else there, we got to stop for snacks, eat a coconut, explore a cave with no one else there, which was probably the coolest part, climb a Banyan tree, see the rainbow trees, and stop several times to see everything from tide pools with sea cucumbers, to try deep fried poi(so delicious) to watching more waterfalls and even hiked through a bamboo forest, again with no one else there. He took photos along the way, told us about the plants and the history of the land. We even got to stop to eat the best fish burger ever at a restaurant in Hana. And no stress about driving the road to Hana. It was probably the best part of our entire stay in Maui. I will definitely book it again with Keone next time we visit. He was amazing! Was a great day. It was awesome to see all that we did. We decided there's not enough time in one day to see everything so plan to come back in the future to explore more of the island. Damien was great showed us some amazing places totally worth it.

Many thanks to Zak for a wonderful day for our family of seven (ranging in age from tween to in their seventies). First of all, driving this road is a specialized skill in and of itself. Zak did a fantastic job. He knew exactly where to pull over at different sites so that we were safe, and once you experience being there you will understand how crucial this is. There was so much beauty on this tour--beaches, plants and animals, a cave, waterfalls, Hawaiian Home Land communities, and small businesses that showcase some of the wonderful goods that come from Maui. There was something for everyone. Zak was very knowledgeable and warm, and we enjoyed learning from him.

Great experience from start to finish. 10 hour trip in all. Great food and beautiful scenery. Demien did a super job customizing it to our desires. Great swim in secluded waterfalls with no other people around! Thankful for his experience driving as well. Would never want to drive the roads with hairpin turns and no place for two cars to pass each other. Local knowledge was important!!

Our wonderful guide, Keola, was great. He obviously enjoyed sharing his love for this area’s culture, beaches, food, and plants. He was also a skilled driver on this challenging road.

Zak was GREAT!
Since we knew how long of a day this would be, we chose to do private tour so that we could go at our pace and spend the time on the things we wanted to (and skip the ones we knew we wouldn't enjoy as much).
The FULL loop of the Road to Hana was just AMAZING... so much to see... and Zak knew exactly the perfect spots to stop at and things to point out. I believe he quickly realized that we were not much into souvenir shopping and he didn't even try taking us to any tourist traps. He did mention as we went along, the opportunities of places to stop and we felt comfortable saying yay or nay!
We also stopped at a pretty cool local spot for lunch.... Hawaiian BBQ and what a view! Another favorite stop was an ice cream truck.... HOMEMADE coconut ice cream was THE best one I've ever tried in my lifetime.
If it's your first time on Maui, and you can afford it, don't hesitate to book a private tour of the Road to Hana. And definitely do the full loop!!! So much more to see and the difference is like night and day between the two different sides of the island.
We got to see the Haleakala from so many different angles... always impressive. We saw black sand beaches and red sand beaches. We also saw tons of waterfalls and canyons, a bamboo forest (so magical).... One super cool thing we did was to go inside a lava tube that was under a banyan tree... and on the other side a waterfall!!! I can't remember everything we saw. All I can say is JUST DO IT! It's an amazing experience. We felt safe at all times. And it was definitely worth the money.

We loved the waterfalls and the foliage. Hana is a beautiful place to visit. Our guide was helpful in tailoring our experience to our specific taste. We had ages ranging from 14 to 65 and all was pleased.

We had the best tour guide. Alex was such a funny, and very knowledgeable about the tour. It was a long tour but it didn't feel like a 10 hour tour at all. Our guide, Zac, was an encyclopedia of information and he really went the extra mile for us. We jumped off a 30 foot cliff, swam in the waterfall and got onto Black Sand Beach when other cars got turned away.

Worth every penny- our guide was friendly and patient, allowing the kids to spend a little extra time in some places and skip others to make this a truly personalized tour. When we asked to switch tour stops at the last minute, the company was very kind and helped us out. My husband was thrilled to not have to drive this tricky road himself, all of the stops were breathtaking and/or fun, and a fabulous time was had by all! I would very highly recommend this to anyone.

I don’t even know where to begin on how great me and my husbands experience was with Damien. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and decided we wanted to have a tour for the Road to Hana instead of doing it on our own so we can have a better experience. From the beginning Damien had excellent communication. He is so knowledgeable and also has a good sense of humor so he was definitely good company and didn’t make the day drag. I have never been on a hike prior to this and Damien was the best. He literally was holding my hand to help me when I wasn’t able to get around certain areas and assured me that I would be okay. I felt very safe and started to get less nervous since I had his help and since he has done this countless times. He even took us to lunch at this little spot in Hana and the food was to die for. He also bought some banana bread for us to have for the next day! After a very tiring day, we wanted to head over to the beach to see if we could see some sea turtles and he offered to take us over there and there were so many it was amazing. This was such a great experience and I cant thank him enough for everything he did for us. If you are thinking of booking him for any tours you definitely won’t regret it he is the best. We did an incredible full day tour with Damian to Hana and back. Honestly could not recommend him and his company more. We went to so many places that were off the beaten path and there’s no way we could’ve found them on our own. Countless breathtaking hideaways that looked as though they were straight out of a movie. Damian was also super accommodating and made sure we hit the spots that were must sees on our list and really customized the day to what we were interested in. Driving was excellent and with frequent breaks to get out and explore neither of us felt sick at any point during the day. Had amazing and tasty local food/treats that were recommended to us as well. Easily one of the best experiences we’ve ever had on a vacation. Well worth it and we will definitely book with Damian and his group again on our next trip out to Maui.
Also felt very safe the entire day as far as Covid precautions go for those looking to book during these times!

My friend and I booked this private tour on our vacation to Maui. We both wanted to experience the Road to Hana and not have to focus on driving. Our guide Demian not only accommodated our needs by driving us safely from location to location but he also taught us along the way about each place we stopped in. He molded the tour to meet our preferences even when we didn’t always voice them. Admittedly, we didn’t even know where to start. The tour experience felt both unique and full of adventure and we were very grateful for our tour guide. He was professional, friendly, engaging, and fun!

My friend and I booked this private tour after hearing many times about how difficult and dangerous the drive is, and we both wanted to experience the trip by not having to worry about driving. I am so glad to find this tour!
Our tour is led my Damian. He’s a wonderful guide. He made sure we have all the info before we left for the 10-hour trip. Since we stayed at Kihei, he came picked us right on the dot and brought many necessary supplies (insect repellent, sunscreen, towel, water, etc) so we can have a fun day. The ride is super clean and he told us that everything is disinfected before a new group. We felt pretty safe (covid wise) getting on this trip.
Since it’s a private tour, Damian tailored towards our liking. My friend and I both wanted to swim in the waterfall pool, so he took us to a local spot that’s not the busy waimoku or twin fall. It’s fabulous because it felt like just us in this nature wonder, and the water fall was super refreshing and beautiful. We got to visit other cool and local spots including red sand beach, black sand beach, lava tube, and a secret cave pool. He made sure my friend and I stayed safe while allowing us to have all the fun. We would not have been able to experience all that without Damian’s knowledge.
His drive was super smooth and we had great time chatting along the way. I had many questions about Hawaiian culture, Maui natural habitat, locals, and species living on the island. He has studied Maui extensively on his own so I learned a lot from him.
So if you don’t want have just another sightseeing, but also a cultural experience, a expedition to see true beauty of Maui, and a little nudge to conquer your fear in the nature, the Road to Hana tour by Makena Maui Adventures would be the right choice.
