Itinerary

After hotel pickup in Anchorage, travel along the scenic Seward Highway, one of only 13 highways in the United States designated an 'All American Road.' Stop along the way to look for wildlife and photograph scenic vistas.

Head to the ski resort town of Girdwood, which was once a mining center. Have the option to ride a tram up to the summit of Mt Alyeska for lunch with a sweeping view of the Chugach National Forest and Turnagain Arm, the narrow waterway that is part of the Cook Inlet and connects to the Gulf of Alaska.

After lunch, drive to Portage Lake for an optional one-hour cruise across the iceberg-dotted waters to see the Portage Glacier up close. Next, visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (own expense), a wildlife preserve dedicated to rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife, including some of Alaska's largest land animals. You can walk around the well-maintained and spacious enclosures to see animals such as wolf, fox, caribou, elk, moose, bear and wood bison up close.

Return to Anchorage where your guide provides an informative city tour that includes the history of Alaska's largest city and insider tips on the best restaurants and entertainment venues in town. Consult with your guide to customize your flexible tour itinerary to the interests of your group.

After your comprehensive introduction to the wilderness and city, your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Great personalized tour!

Other than a hiccup with the dining at the top of the tram not being available, we had a great day on Turnagain Arm. Dawn was a wonderful guide--offered good information along the way but also was sensitive to our need for "quiet time" as we were tired from two weeks of traveling in Alaska. Good balance overall, and a gorgeous day to see Portage Glacier!
