This is by far the best excursion we’ve been on all vacation. Our driving guide-Tony-was kind, knowledgeable, and super fun to spend our whole day with. On our drive to the glaciers he pointed out some cool facts about the mountains and lakes we were passing. Even on our way back, we had some extra time and Tony allowed us the opportunity to drive to the top of the mountain where we saw the most beautiful river with an amazing view. He was very patient with our 5 million questions, and never once rushed us when we wanted to take extra pictures- and he’s also pretty impressive with a guitar!
Jason was our extraordinary hiking guide and his immense expertise on hiking through the glaciers made it so fun, interactive and worthwhile. He taught us cool fun facts about crevices created in glaciers, the science behind how a glacier is formed, and even allowed us to drink glacier water which was the biggest hit of our hike (who knew water could be so exciting). If you’re going to book this excursion you MUST do it with Jason because he’s not only fun, but he was safe and cautious with our group, and kept and eye out on all of us.
Quick tips: you need to bring some form of hiking shoes because my pink Nike running shoes were cute, but not durable for glacier hiking. It’s always better to bring extra layers because although it’s July and the weather was fairly nice, it definitely changed on various parts of the glacier and having a hoodie really helped. Bring a water bottle to fill up on some of that pure glacier water, and some sun glasses because the sun was really shining. I can’t recommend this excursion enough.

Amazing hike in the glacier. Our tour guide Laina was terrific and made the experience memorable. We were lucky enough to see an iceberg flip out of the water. We felt safe the entire trip. Weather was a huge plus- it was sunny and in the 70’s, but the hike would have been enjoyable even in poor weather.
The drive from Anchorage was long though and 12 of us we were stuffed into a van for the ride. Unfortunately, our family of 4 adults were picked up last and were stuck in the only remaining seats in the very back of the van - the tour company should do better on that aspect. We rated high because the hike was so good. There is a lunch - not included in the tour price- at Long Rifle Lodge - the views were fantastic- the food was not good.
If you have a car, I recommend booking the hike separately and drive yourself there. The driver was nice enough, but frankly did not provide that much historical/ local information that made his presence necessary.

The Matanuska Glacier Hike was an amazing full day excursion. We were picked up from our AirBNB in Anchorage, driven about 2 hours to the glacier where we hiked for about 2 - 2.5 hours. Our guide shared details on the different attributes of the glacier as we hiked on it - the experience was incredible! Our tour then went to a nice local restaurant for lunch before our 2 hour drive back. Our driver pointed out wildlife along the way and stopped so we could get some pictures too. Be prepared for a moderate+ hike.

This excursion was amazing! We had one day in anchorage and wasn’t sure if we should do this because it would take up most of the day and was 2 hrs away, but I’m so glad we chose this. It was my husband and our three teenagers and this was all of our favorite activity of our whole week in Alaska. Lori was our guide and went above and beyond in everything. She even helped us pick our dinner after the excursion and dropped us off there. The hiking on the glacier was incredible. It was an amazing experience and evey step went smoothly. Would highly recommend!

Comfortable transportation with a personable tour guide and an A+ glacier experience.
My thoughts, after a few days:
1. PICK UP & DROP OFF It was super convenent to be picked up right at the door of my hotel and was not a problem when I asked to be dropped off at a nearby restaurant at the the end of the experience.
2. THE RIDE I was traveling solo. Rina, the guide, seemed more like an old friend than a stranger. Her conversational skills put everyone at ease. As a lifelong AK resident, she had loads of info to share but did not overwhelm us with talking. I get nauseous on car rides, but was ok in the 1st back seat row, with anti-nausea meds (I would've requested the front seat, but that spot was already taken by a woman with the same issue). The ride started with faster, straight urban(ish) roads, then was super rural, with twists and turns and lots of construction. We stopped twice for bathroom and stretching or legs. Oh and we saw a momma and baby moose! We were all keeping an eye out and Rina was totally willing to stop if/when we saw a moose and for photo oops of the beautiful scenery.
3. WHAT TO BRING/WEAR My visit was in mid-July. It was in the mid 50's and rainy in Anchorage, with less rain, but colder temps (40-50) expected at the glacier. I was concerned about what to wear so I didn't get too hot on the ride there, but also needed to bring layering options for the 2 hour ice hike. This is what worked for me (a 50ish female who is usually warm): moisture wicking sports bra/tank, button up cotton shirt, leggings, thin compression socks, blundstone leather boots. Once on site, there are ample bathrooms where you can add layers. I put on an under armour long sleeve under the button up shirt, wool blend hiking socks, a 2nd set of leggings that were a bit thicker and made of a more water resistant fabric. I wore a baseball cap (to help keep rain off my glasses) under the helmet they provided, and my lightweight raincoat/windbreaker. Rina advised us that it would not be colder out in the ice than the air temp at the base, and that we were likely to get warm and want to take layers off as we got going. Based on that advice, I left my fleece coat layer in the van, along with my winter hat. I did put thin winter gloves in my coat pocket but only ended up wanting them for a little bit at the beginning- still I was glad to have them. I didn't bring or use an umbrella and don't advise it. You want your hands free to help balance as you trek through cravasses and in case you slip.
4. SAFETY & THE HIKE ITSELF Our glacier hike guide was Sam. He had a good sense of humor and explained a lot about the science of the glacier itself, the dangers, and how deep a shallow looking "puddle" could be (30+ feet!!). Before getting onto the ice, we were fitted for crampons that were realtively easy to stretch over your shoes. Sam gave a quick lesson about the right and wrong way to go up and down an incline. Sam led the way, creating a path for us as we followed in a single file line. I got the sense that there are no set paths, but that the guide tailers the experience to the group. Our group didn't have anyone younger than 14, but I did see some families with younger kids and a dad carrying a baby on his back. It's definitely not a place for your kid to run around and explore. No real great physical prowess is needed but you need to be sure on your feet, be able to stomp your ice crampons into the surface so you don't slip, and have the endurance to finish a varied incline 2+ mile walk with an uphill trek back to the starting building.
5. LUNCH & RIDE BACK After our 2 hour glacier hike we stopped at a nearby restaurant for lunch. It was scenic, spacious enough, and had great food. We stopped one additional time on the way back for bathroom break. Some folks slept. Rina kept the conversation light on the return.
Overall, everyone seemed to enjoy the experience. No one got injured. I definitely recommend it, above any of the other tours I embarked during my first trip to Anchorage. I will specifically look for Rina, this Thursday guide, for future endeavors around Anchorage.

Very well organized, 2 hour drive to the glacier with rest stops for coffee, bathrooms and there were snacks in the van too. Scott who drove us to the glacier and back knows a lot about Alaska and was providing commentary throughout the drive with really interesting nuggets of information about the landscape. Riley was a fantastic tour guide, letting us know exactly where to step and navigate the ice and we learned a lot about the different features of the glaciers too. Lunch at the lodge with incredible views of the glacier was the perfect way to end the afternoon!

Great tour with glacier hike! Our chauffeur is very nice courteous throughout our journey. Our guide (Kailey) at glacier is very good in explaining different terminology related to glaciers. Very knowledgeable and highly recommend this guide. Only one advice to chauffeur scott, please provide more quiet time. I know he is being nice and want to keep engaged but I dont see any of passengers showing any interest so sometimes he can leave us alone.. i felt its too much engagingly

It was a good experience, and we got to like on the glacier, but we basically stayed along the very end of the glacier. It was a good experience and I would recommend it, but the day before we did a helicopter tour the day before and landed on the Knik glacier, sk it was different.

My husband and I had so much fun on this tour! Our tour guide, Lori was extremely knowledgeable and kind. We stopped along the way for snacks and a bathroom break, as well as for lunch after at a lodge nearby the glacier. The glacier itself was also amazing! The guides were very kind, helpful, and made sure we were all safe, while also making the experience fun. 10/10, or in this case 5/5, highly recommend!

A must do ! Matanuska happens to be the largest road accesible glacier in North America: The tour is perfectly organized and the guides extremely knowledgeable. End of March was perfect timing, we had a very sunny day with temperatures close to 32F (0 C). Sunlight shining over that much ice is worth seeing !

Side note: you can also book this tour directly with the glacier park, but then you have to drive on snowy, windy roads for a couple hours.

It was a lovely tour guided by the owner, Lori, who was knowledgeable and shared a lot of her experiences throughout the journey to the glacier. My only small gripe was that the van stayed quite cold all day, so we kept our jackets on the whole time. Other tours I’ve been on usually kept the vehicle warmer. I would also have appreciated more information about the geology or history of the region.
There were four of us in Lori’s group that day. Once we reached the glacier, we were handed over to the glacier guiding company and combined with other groups, forming a group of around 14 people. The glacier company provides warm clothing if needed, as well as cleats. It does get extremely cold on the glacier — the wind was incredibly strong and felt closer to –30°C. The wind also blew tiny bits of snow and ice into our faces, so I’d definitely recommend bringing sunglasses.
The glacier guide was excellent and very informative, and overall it was a fascinating experience. It appears that only this glacier guide company is allowed to guide there so basically all the tours offer a very similar experience, plus return transport to the glacier.
The key downside for me was that the group included people with very different physical abilities. Although we spent about two hours on the glacier, we moved at a very slow pace and covered only a short distance. Much of the time was spent waiting for people to take photos at each stop, which made the experience feel a bit commercialised. The glacier itself is absolutely stunning and 100% worth visiting.
Personally, I would have preferred an option for a more active, higher-intensity exploration so we could see more of the glacier. I understand the need to keep the glacier accessible to everyone, especially with multiple tour groups present, but it would be great if there were ways to accommodate different activity levels.
The lunch stop was incredibly scenic and the food was good too.

We had a blast!! The glaciers were so absolutely beautiful, the snow had freshly fallen so it was truly a winter wonderland. Our tour guide Alyssa helped us up into beautiful hard to reach places and we explored so many glacier caves and beauties. Also wasn’t a hard hike in the slightest!

That's it my vacation break , I choose the Anchorage for hike at Maranuska with Viator, and fir 1st time in my life that's hike on the ice Gracier on the top of mountain.. the Tour guide was friendly and kind so between on the road to hike she explained for the story in Anchorage Alaska, her name is Lori.. and then when I get in the National Park and I met the another Tour Guide that's he will bring me and group Tour Going up to the top of mountain for walked and hiking..his name is Tom he so nice and funny I love ❤️ that..so he explained and let's us know everything for the ice and gracier..great and ❤️ so much.. I will recommended for my friends for the Tour and great experiences with Tom for hike in Matanuska AK. 1st time of my Life .

Amazing. Take the early tour! Lori and Alyssa were wonderful. Would come back and do it again. Great trip for the family. Beautiful sites. The weather was perfect. Lori and Alyssa are amazing story tellers and they know their Alaska and glacier history and facts. Definitely recommend booking 907 Tours to do the glacier hike.
