We went on this expedition after realizing we would rather interact with Alaska than go on a train and take pictures. We had the BEST time. I was with my husband and three kids (9-14 yo) and all three of us had the time of our loves. The hour long boat ride was with a kind and knowledgeable naturalist talking to us about the water, land, and animals of the area. We saw rocks on the shore with at least a dozen sweet looking seals! Bald eagles flew around us. No whales or otters, but we loved the boat ride. It is beautiful! Then we beached, walked to a fun old school bus for a 5 minute ride, and were guided to put on rain gear and boots by three fun guides. They live on the island with very little comforts! They each led a canoe of 10 or so people. We canoed to another area, walked around a small rapids, and canoed again to the glacier. The guides thought the situation would be safe to beach the canoes and walk a bit of the beach towards the glacier. The whole area was stunning. The glacier itself was incredibly beautiful!!!! So many blues. This was absolutely worth the money and time and really made our trip to Alaska special. I would recommend it to anyone! Definitely do this through Alaska X or viator, not through the cruise. There will be fewer people on the main boat and it will probably cost a bit less!

Pro tip no need to pack...

WilliamS_L, Sep 2025
Pro tip no need to pack waterproof hiking boots for this as you will need to leave your own shoes at their camp and put on their waterproof boots for the hike and canoe portion. Overall the experience was just OK for the cost per person. The female guide we had was very knowledgeable about the locale, it was enjoyable and informative and it made the long boat ride entertaining. However overall there just wasn't much to see, (not sure if it was the time of year in September) during the hike through the forest to our canoes nothing to see and maybe 2 or 3 items of nature pointed out. During the canoe ride we got to land as close as possible to the glacier but it was so far away and we could not hike any closer. I was told rules had changed and people could no longer hike any closer to the glacier. However I also felt like maybe it was due to a time constraint that we could not hike any closer, there were more tours after ours so I believe they had to get us back. If you like boats and water could try this but if you'd like to see a glacier this is not the one.

Definitely a fantastic time! Do it!

Cool experience. Very interesting to share time either way the young folks “camping” near the glacier. The glacier is receding sadly and you cannot longer touch it. Otherwise 5. Stars

We loved this tour! Sarah was a wealth of knowledge while we were taking the boat ride to and from the camp site. Once we arrived at base camp we were served fresh snacks and drinks and then loaded into a vintage bus to get to the equipment shelters. The canoe trip was beautiful and the guides there were so knowledgeable and excited about what they were showing us. Traveling to the base of the glacier and getting to walk around was extra special. We even saw whales on our boat ride back which was an extra bonus. We loved it!!

The guys did a great job putting us on a few whales. We moved a couple of different times to find activity. I nothing spectacular and we didn’t get that close, but sometimes that’s the way it goes.

Response from Host, Sep 2022

Thank you for taking the time to review us. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, but we're happy to hear you got to see some whales!

Geld- und Zeitverschwendung

Achtung Kreuzfahrer: Lassen Sie diese Tour sein! 1.
