When to visit

June to August offers the best combination of pleasant, not-too-chilly weather and peak wildlife-watching opportunities. This includes the largest population of humpback whales in Alaska as they migrate from warmer climates. Just pack the proper clothing for brisk nights and potential rain. The shoulder seasons in May and September are just as beautiful but expect colder temperatures.

Getting around

While the village of Hoonah is easily walkable, it’s located about 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) from Icy Strait Point, the Tlingit-owned and -operated cruise port that also serves as the departure point for many water-based excursions. A shuttle runs between the two locations if you don’t feel like walking.

Traveler tips

In 2021, a second cruise port was built near Icy Strait Point to accommodate more visitors. A free gondola connects the two ports, but it’s worth the short ride just to see the views. For even more impressive views, buy a ticket for a second ride up to the top of Hoonah Mountain, where you can also explore the Tongass National Forest or go ziplining.
