Itinerary

Muir Woods and Sausalito:
Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and travel north to Muir Woods National Monument for your exploration of the giant coastal redwood trees. This old-growth forest is home to some of the planet’s oldest and tallest trees, which you can admire in all their glory as you walk along shady paths.

Then head to Sausalito, a picturesque small town just north of the Golden Gate Bridge that sits between the Marin Headlands and San Francisco Bay. You have leisure time here to walk along the waterfront, maybe purchase a snack (own expense) or perhaps shop in the galleries and boutiques.

Alcatraz:
Board the ferry to Alcatraz at Pier 33 on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. Enjoy the scenic ride across San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz Island, and disembark to start your independent tour of this island prison. Put on your provided headset to listen to the award-winning audio tour, “Doing Time,” and learn about notorious criminals such as Al Capone who were incarcerated here. Hear about escape attempts from 'The Rock,' and listen to commentary from former inmates and staff.

NOTE: Due to schedule limitations with Muir Woods, there is a chance that this tour will be held on two separate days. You will be informed prior if your Muir Woods visit will be held on a different day from your Alcatraz visit.

This tour is likely to sell out! The Alcatraz daily ticket allotment regularly fills up weeks in advance, so book early to avoid disappointment.

All Alcatraz tickets are given on a will call basis. Upon arriving Alcatraz landing Pier 33, guests will get their tickets from the Guest Services counter (upon customer identification is shown)

You must provide first and last names, along with ages of all passengers to confirm your reservation. If for any reason you do not provide this information within the window of time provided, your Alcatraz tour will be forfeited.

The Alcatraz portion usually takes 2.5 hours to complete, with its audio tour consisting of approximately 45 minutes. You are advised to inquire on your arrival to the island as to what time the next guided tour will begin. There is no restriction on the amount of time you spend on the Island. The ferry boat service departs Alcatraz every 30-60 minutes and you can disembark at your own leisure.

Alcatraz-Muir Woods-Sausalito Tour

The trip was great but we didn't have enough time in Sausalito. We really wanted to do the Alcatraz portion first, followed by Muir Woods and then Sausalito so we wouldn't be rushed, but it was booked. It was nice to do Muir Woods in the morning because it wasn't as crowded. When they dropped us off for the Alcatraz tour they sort of just "dump you off" and send you on your way. It was a little confusing to get the tickets and frustrating to be in the lines with all the people when we already paid. The tour company should give you the tickets to get on Alcatraz in the same manner they do for the Muir Woods tour. If they did this, we could have had ore time in Sausalito. They rushed us back from Sausalito to sit in the sun waiting for Alcatraz boat time for more than 1 hour. When you pay this kind of money, it would be nice to avoid that ridiculous line and having to dig through emails to find your confirmations etc. to get your ticket at will call to get on the boat. The bus was really nice and the tour guide knew a lot about the city.

The trip was excellent the meeting point was walking distance from our hotel which worked out great. Muir Woods was beautiful. The view of Gold Gate Bridge was amazing. The stop at Sausalito was good for grabbing some lunch before heading to Alcatraz. Our tour was well worth it and our bus driver was very knowledgeable about the area.

The smell of the forest first thing off the bus was incredible. My lunch in Suasalito was "chef's kiss". Our bus driver was so nice, knowledgeable and accommodating. Alcatraz was so interesting. Plus I really enjoyed the relaxing ferry ride.

Climb the Rock

Very great audio tour of the cell block. Be sure to ask before climbing the Rock which buildings close early. I went to see one exhibit in the Industrial building and they were locking the door even though the island was open for 2 more hours. Wish I had know that before I climbed the steep ramps on bad knees. Otherwise it was very informative. Glad they are doing things to protect the wildlife there, beautify the grounds and restore some of the buildings. Definitely recommend the tour.

Was a good trip that didn't take up all day. Muir Woods was a nice easy hike, even the harder trail. Need to allow more time if you want to do a decent hike. Alcatraz was interesting and a must see, even if a return visit isn't required.
