Maria and Luis are wonderful hosts! Maria met us at the market and purchased fresh foods after asking our food preferences. Spent time with her in the kitchen preparing amazing dishes. Maria is a culinary whiz! I asked for fresh sardines (so curious to try the real thing) which she fried....OMG soooo amazing. The table was full of food and beautifully set. A lovely experience with lovely people. Would schedule again in a heartbeat! These wonderful generous hosts only get a small fraction of the Viator fee. Be aware. Tip accordingly. And DO take this tour!

Maria was a fantastic host! Had a wonderful time shopping with her and then back to her apartment. I love to cook but you are not obligated to do so. We had great starters and decided on a pork and shrimp dish. All in all a wonderful experience!

Great Introduction to Lisbon and Portuguese Cuisine

Wonderful way to get introduced not only to Lisbon but also to Portuguese cuisine. Maria was an exceptional guide and host, engaging in planning and shopping for the meal, as well as very welcoming when coming back to her home to cook. The meal was spectacular; the company and the conversation superb.

Can’t say enough positive things about our afternoon with Maria at the market, cooking, eating and drinking in her home. Truly the highlight of our Portugal travels. We learned so much about Portuguese foods and culture. Our time went by so quickly with wonderful conversation and we left feeling like we had truly made friends in Portugal. Would recommend that anyone who wants a true Portuguese family experience do this cooking class with Maria. There is no place else you will experience this!

Maria Antonia and Luis were the highlight of our trip to Portugal. They were the perfect hosts. Our tour of the market was a lot of fun, we learned so much about Portugal and cooking authentic Portuguese dishes, and it was a pleasure to spend time in their home. I wasn’t a customer, I was a guest! Maria and her husband and friends welcomed me into her home today for such an authentic time with locals. First we went to the market to buy the food needed to cook. Then to her home where her husband and wonderful dog met up. I’ve been traveling a while now so some dis snuggles were welcome. Maria’s husband opened and served wine while we cooked. We made a traditional Portuguese dish with onions, tomatoes, variety of fish, then again and topped with herbs. There were also clams in garlic butt er sauce and roasted shrimp. The table wouldn’t have been completed without olives, cheeses and chorizo. For dessert there were Nata which I love more each day. Today was amazing. I didn’t feel like I was on a your. I felt like I was having a meal with friends. Which I actually think now that’s exactly what happened.

A lovely Portuguese experience

My husband and I had a lovely afternoon with Maria and Louis. We met Maria and two other guests at the seafood market. After we decided on a menu, Maria purchased the ingredients and we all followed her to her house just a few blocks away. Louis kept our wine glasses full as we helped prep vegetables for a fish stew as well as a chorizo egg dish. The table was beautifully decorated with fruit, cheeses, breads, and jams. The dishes prepared were delicious and we left their home with full bellies. It was a delightful afternoon and I would recommend this market/cooking/eating afternoon to anyone wanting a true Portuguese experience. Thanks again to our lovely host and hostess.

Maria met us at the market and explained what and why she was buying. She asked our preferences at all points. Once we purchased very fresh ingredients we walked to her house. We were made very comfortable and served water and wine. She put together some starters and we had some of those. She gave us directions and we helped prepare the meal. Everything was delicious. We had great conversation, good food and lovely wine. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We learned a great deal about Portuguese culture along with our meal. Thank you Maria!

True taste of Portugal

This experience was a fabulous one. Maria & Luis are not only wonderful cooks but exceptional hosts. It was a national holiday so the market was closed, but they still opened their home to us! This is a must do if you really want a true taste of Portugal.

Wonderful cooking class with a warm and inviting local chef

A very special experience cooking with a local chef and her family in her home. Tour started in a market where we were asked for our preferences, the menu decided based in our input, and selections of fresh cheese, vegetables fruits meats bread for our class. We then proceeded to tht chef's home where we were welcomed like family. We prepared a fabulous multi course lunch with wonderful conversations about life in Lisbon and Portugal. My friends and I agree this was a highlight of our stay in Lisbon. Would highly recommend this cooking class!

Our favorite day in Lisbon!

This was our favorite day in Lisbon! We met Antonia at a local market and bought the ingredients for our lunch. We then walked about 5 minutes to her home, where we met Antonia’s husband Luis and were welcomed into their home. We really enjoyed seeing a normal Lisbon neighborhood outside of the tourist zone! Antonia asked us in advance what we wanted to cook. We asked to learn to cook in a cataplana, and to learn how to cook octopus. We also cooked delicious clams. While we cooked, we sipped wine and talked together as if we were old friends. Luis is a photographer and the photos in their home were amazing. After we cooked, of course we ate! With more wine! We were there until late in the afternoon and could have stayed all night if Antonina didn’t have to cook for a wedding she was catering a couple of days later! Do not hesitate to enjoy this unique experience! It was the highlight of our trip!

Six star experience!!

If I could leave six stars I would. I cannot begin to describe the fun we had, the warmth we felt, and the lessons we learned from Maria and her husband, Luiz. From the moment we met at the market, Maria included us in the meal planning -- selecting the dishes we would most enjoy and meeting the fish, bread, and produce vendors who she preferred. When we arrived at her house, the fun began. A little wine, a wonderful husband, and a friendly dog made us feel welcome. We helped prepare fried mackerel, cod with potatoes, salad, and mussels -- all which turned out wonderfully. Cooking a dinner with a Portuguese family is a treat; we didn't know that Maria actually has written a Portuguese cookbook which contains many delicious recipes that we'll make at home. After a delicious meal, lots of discussion, and a wonderful dessert, we were amazed to find how quickly the time had passed. A four-hour class turned into a seven-hour experience, one that made our entire trip to Lisbon one we'll never forget. If you go to Lisbon do this one thing. You'll never regret -- or forget -- it!

We met Maria at the local market in a nice neighborhood: cordial contact right at the beginning. After having bought all the ingredients, we walked back to her apt and met her husband. We cooked and ate a delicious hearty typical meal. The whole activity colored by our discussions about Portugal and its people. Such a nice and more authentic experience!
