When to visit
The beating heart of the Algarve, this resort area sees an influx of European holidaymakers between June and September, when the sun shines down on the golden sands of the beaches. If you’re going to surf the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll find the best swells between September and April.
Getting around
If you’re flying into Faro Airport, take a bus to Albufeira. The town’s small size and quaint marina means that it’s easy to explore on foot once you’re there. Albufeira and the wider Algarve area are also serviced by a regular and well-connected train service that stops at all major towns between Faro and Lisbon. Using public transport is a great way to hop between beaches because you don’t have to worry about finding parking. You can also use ride hailing services including Bolt and Uber.
Traveler tips
The Algarve is famous for its beautiful beaches and the dramatic sandstone cliffs that surround them. To beat the crowds, hire a car and head off the beaten path to the clothing-optional Praia Joao de Arens—you can also use this as a jumping-off point for the cliff walk that showcases some of the area’s best coastal scenery. Of course, if you’re into more refined fun, you’ll find a few golf courses including Pine Hills which has stunning views of Praia da Falésia.
If you’re looking for family friendly things to do, consider booking one of the many speed boat tours that leave from the marina. They’ll take you, and dozens of other passengers, past colorful local fishing boats out to see dolphins, caves, and the coastline which is best viewed from the water. And if you don’t mind getting wet, check out the Algarve’s water parks.
