Mike does such a nice job of sharing food and history in a comfortable setting. It was entertaining and we all enjoyed the evening.

An ingenious idea brought to life by a passionate professional. We can’t recommend this unique experience highly enough. 5-star, rave reviews all around! Mike puts his heart and soul into it and it shows. Outstanding food, exceptional presentation of history, getting to privately browse through the Historical Society Museum in the Fireproof Building and more…an evening that exceeded our expectations. Well worth it! A must do experience.

Wow!! This is something all visitors to Charleston should do. This guy is the BEST cook! The best storyteller! If you enjoy the history of our country, AND the history of all kinds of food, this is highly recommended!! He should open a restaurant!

Mike was a wealth of knowledge teaching us about Charleston food, city and plantation life, along with general history from the 17th - 20th century. We got to have a private 30 minute tour of the museum at the Charleston Historical Society after arriving and before sitting down for dinner at 6:30 in a beautifully dining room with accurately depicting a tabletop seating for 14. The menu changes periodically and is based on local recipes. We were fed soup, 3 main dishes and 2 sides along with 3 desserts. And….you get to take home the left overs if you are local.
During the evening, you are transported back to the 18th and 19th centuries and how they entertained and ate family style. Great experience that you should not miss! Don’t forget to take your own bottle of wine to enjoy with your own small group. We were served a glass of Madeira, but no other liquor. What a wonderful evening!!!

Wow! This was an amazing event. Mike prepared, served and narrated the entire meal. He was very professional and knowledgeable and encouraged guest participation. I highly recommend this event and would do it again as he changes the menu!

The dinner was excellent with a nice variety of dishes served. Mike's enthusiasm for both culinary and local history shines through as he shared stories of founding families, contributing cultural influences, and how the dishes developed, were seasoned, and cooked. We enjoyed the evening and every dish served. Highly recommend!

The food was good. Wasn’t sure if I would like the food but wanted to experience the historical dishes. I really liked. Learned a lot of history.

The food was amazing! Our host and chef, Mike, was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. He rotates the food and time period in history so we plan to attend another dinner in the future.

Mike is absolutely wonderful. He was very knowledgeable. His food was wonderful and authentic. So much history

The food was excellent but what made it so interesting was the talk and description Mike gave on the food.
His in-depth knowledge on the history and food of those times was absolutely incredible.
At times the talk was so entertaining that I forgot to eat.
A big thank you to Mike for making my birthday treat so memorable.

I booked this adventure months in advance and I am so glad I did. Impressive.
If you’re looking for something grown and sexy, this is it. This ain’t no bar, ain’t no club. This is for the off beat folks who March to a different drum.
As a fellow creator, I was watching Art being made in front of my eyes.

A fantastic evening not to be missed. Began with a half hour in the Charleston Historical Society Museum; very interesting information. The host of the dinner, dressed in period clothes, made all the dishes himself. So much delicious food from different periods of 1700’s and 1800’s actual recipes. He explained about the kind of foods the people ate back then and the spices, ingredients used. Dinner was highly informative (lots of history information too) and delicious. And we were able to take leftovers home. A most delightful host and experience, well worth the price. I’d give 10 stars!

We live about 2 hours from Charleston and so we come in a couple of times a year. We wanted to do something different and I read the reviews on this event and took a chance. We were not disappointed! This by far has been the most fun, informative and delightful evening we have spent in Charleston. Mike as the host was delightful and the food was delicious! This is a not to be missed experience. I would highly recommend.

This is such an amazing experience! Mike is a fantastic host. You get to visit the Fireproof Building & Museum after hours and look around before you go upstairs for dinner. Dinner was delicious. Mike talks you through South Carolina and Charleston history in a really interesting way (I'm not from Charleston or South Carolina and felt like I could follow everything he was saying). My favorite part of what he shared was the culinary history!! Sharing where these recipes came from, why they're seasoned this way, why these ingredients were popular, how this meal would have been served, chefs in the area, etc. I've never heard history told from that perspective and it was absolutely fascinating. I left wanting to learn more!
Mike does these dinners often and is always changing the meal so I would definitely rebook this experience every time I'm in Charleston to try new historic food and learn more!

There really is no way to express the fabulous experience and culinary delight we had in doing this. History isn't usually experienced through food, but this gentleman has done it with great gusto, in which, each great dish only got better with the next great dish. This is more than a 'tasting'. It is well worth the time and the price. HIGHLY recommended! You must book ahead. Space is limited.

The stories of Charleston and the history was wonderful. The history and receipts on each entree was fun. There was also a free pre tour of the museum. The host was wonderful. This is a must do on a trip to Charleston

This is a chance to experience an authentic meal of recipe's served during the 18th and 19th century in Charleston. Mike's knowledge of the history of food is exemplary and brings the dining experience to life. Do yourself a favor and book this tour!

Great dialog of Charleston history along with well prepared dishes. Loved viewing the museum exhibits.

Other than the Biltmore Mansion in Asheville, this meal with historian Mike Hebb was the most memorable experience of our Savannah, Charleston, and Ashville tour (taken after Thanksgiving 2023). Colonial food was FABULOUS especially with Mike's professional historical context of Charleston culture and vast history.
Our only 2 regrets were:
1) we did not follow our premonition of recording (with our iPhone) the historian cook's informative and humorous dialog of American history and food during the surprisingly delightful array of a full course meal; and,
2) we were unprepared for Mike's offer to bring leftover food at the end of the event because of our continuing travels.
Without a doubt, this was worth every penny and time invested:
Highly, highly, highly recommended!!!

A great experience to share a meal with a group of people - learning about history and eating great food. Mike was a wonderful host, shared a lot of interesting history and great food on top of it all. Also loved the ability to have a private visit at this museum.

Mike is very well versed on the history of Charlestown/Charleston, and is also a culinary guru. Put both togetherr and received a wonderful evening. An added plus, you get to comb the first fire safe buildine in the Hoky City.

Had a very enjoyable evening listening to Mike speaking about the history of the region and how the food he had prepared related to that history. The food was excellent. We particularly enjoyed the Beef Rump, Mushroom Fricassee, and Shrimp Pie. The Apple Charlotte dessert was also outstanding. Being located in the South Carolina Historical Society building provided additional context with the exhibits we had time to enjoy while the final touches of the dinner were being prepared. Highly recommend this activity!

The whole experience was extra ordinary!!!
If you like history and love the history of food, this is an opportunity not to be missed It was lovingly served with great detail and awareness of the times that this food was served. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Come hungry like they did in the 18/19 centuries!

Very enjoyable - historical museum, fantastic food and a lively history lesson! Will do this again if back in Charleston
