This horse-drawn carriage ride and tour, a journey that travels back in time to the colonial beginnings of Charleston, meets at 14 Anson Street, home of the Old South Carriage Company. Charleston, the oldest and second-largest city in South Carolina, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pre-Civil-War-era houses.
As the tour progresses, pass by the old churches, antebellum mansions and lush gardens of Charleston — more than 2.5 miles and 30 blocks of residential real estate. Stop outside historic homes, like the Gov. William Aiken House, the former home of South Carolina Governor William Aiken, Jr. This house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
Part of the charm of the tour are the horses that pull the carriage. These are the same kinds of draft horses that worked on American farms in the early 1800s, making this voyage all the more authentic.

You don't know what route of 9 available you are taking until you stop at a booth and the driver is given the good-bad news. All we saw were beautiful homes of the rich and some famous people and some history relating to them. I mapped my own on Google maps and it was far better and interesting. Granted I did not have a guide but I had a book with me that covered what I was seeing.

Our tour guide and trusty steed Ace made an exceptional team! The tour guide was a great storyteller and shared many interesting bits of local history that made the hour go very quickly. So happy to hear how Charleston partners closely with the carriage tour companies to care for these wonderful animals along with the streets of the city. What a gift. Would highly recommend this company and the tour to see the wonderful old homes and churches of Charleston.

This tour was easy and amazing! John was our tour guide, and he was friendly, engaging, and funny. He gave us some great history and pointed out important sites along the horse drawn carriage ride. The carriage was relatively spacious and comfortable.. Our horse was named Jesse, and he was a beautiful and proud horse who knew his way around town, for sure. This was a unique experience that was well worth the cost, especially if you love horses. We also noticed that the check-in building seemed to prioritize good care and health of their horses, which made us feel proud to support this business. My wife and I would definitely recommend this to anyone on their first visit to Charleston.

We are native Charlestonians, but we learned some history. We have been on several of your zones and always learn something. The tour is a must for visitors.

This was one of the best things we did and recommended at the start of the Charleston visit. I think it was as Olivia, our guide, who made the entire ride worth the money. It was dog friendly which also made it nice for us. Seeing parts of the city and hearing some history was great.

It was so easy to get in and out. And the registration online very smooth. Parking was right across the street.
I had booked online for myself as something to do while I was waiting to fly home. My kids surprised me and joined me at the last minute, and we were able to add them on to the same ride plus change our time to go earlier with no effort.
Everyone there was super nice and informative.

John_K, Jun 2026
A very pleasant horse drawn carriage ride around "historic Charleston." Chock full of interesting facts and history of the area all in a very comfortable horse drawn carriage
Melissa_S, Jun 2026
Our guide was very knowledgeable and we learned a LOT about everything Charleston. From physical base materials to founding fathers to pirate history! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Also, as an animal lover, these horses are SO well cared for- they are even in a working union! I was feeling bad about him carrying 16 people but finding out that he needs it for enrichment (and the weight load is monitored), they live on a huge farm, get breaks, has a masseuse, vet, nutritionist, acupuncturist and chiropractor- they're better cared for then my friends and me at our jobs lol.
Being from the NYC area and the issue with how central park carriage horses are being treated, I truly enjoyed learning that this is not an issue here. It made the tour even more enjoyable!

Skyler and Francis the horse were excelllent. There are ramps to board and disembark, no climbing. Lots of history involved n looking at old historic Charleston.
Priscilla_W, Jun 2026
Heidi was a fantastic tour guide. She was very knowledgeable and had an engaging personality. Dash was an amazingly well-trained horse. It was an hour well-spent.
