I checked the website and was not able to buy tickets for the day we wanted so I found this option on Viator instead. We received the tickets in advance and we walked right in and went to pickup the audio guide which was well worth having. We walked around at our own pace and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Do not even get me started on the views of the city from the vantage points on 2nd 3rd and 4th floors of this castle. And the audio guides about 17 points a little long winded but amazing information.

Tour by train from Rome to Pimpheii

I took a high speed train tour from Rome to pompheii and I would definitely recommend this tour! They met us at train station and were very nice and pleasant and everything was very easy and planned wonderfully and easy to follow!

Interesting self guided tour

Easy to book at a time which suited us on the day after our Vatican museum trip was cancelled via Viator (not sure of the reason but suspect it was sheer numbers in the day). We had priority tickets and so no queuing at all. The castle itself was easy to get round although a few steps to negotiate but worth it for the wonderful views once you were up there virtually 360 degrees. Also clean toilets and a cafe. All in all it made up for the initial disappointment of the called Vatican museum tour and we still got to see St Peter’s square Nd the basilica.

Not worth skipping the line if you arrive early! There was no line to skip at 9:00am!

I highly recommend visiting Castel Sant’Angelo, but the skip the line price for the early morning time slot is a waste of money! There was no line to skip. Probably worth it for times later in the day when the crowd picks up. We paid for the audio tour, which was very informative. However, not all of the numbered stops are obvious/easy to find. Don’t get worried if your stops get out of numerical order!

Great way to escape the Roman heat

Ali met us right on time and was easy to find. We definitely recommend adding the audio tour as it provided a ton of interesting information as many of the rooms didn’t have much signage. This is an excellent way to spend a couple hours in a hot Roman summer. Much of the area is indoor (several of the rooms had some air conditioning) and much of the outdoor space was shaded with a nice breeze. It also offers spectacular views of Rome and Vatican City from a high vantage point. Pro tip: skip the porta potties outside as there are several clean restrooms inside. We also really appreciated the cafe midway up with stunning views and an opportunity to rest with a cool beverage.
