Michela was amazing, provided tons of details during the tour, but was friendly and attentive, speaking both Italian and English when required, she seemed to understand the German and Brazilian attendees also. Everyone was cared for!!

The listening devices did not work. The tour guide did her best, but had to re-explain everything in four different languages because the listening/translation devices did not work properly. That caused us to start late, spend too much time in one place, and did not allow us to tour Palatine Hill which was supposed to be part of our tour along with the Colosseum and the Forum.

1. The headsets we were given were (by admission of the guide and lady handing them out) experimental ! Consequently many did not work when handed out. They tried to fix the faulty ones, which took up the initial 30 mins of the tour, however after only 10 minutes inside the Colosseum, at the first viewing platform, 2 of the group had had enough and handed their headsets back, and went off on their own. about 15 minutes later anther 4 gave up and did the same. All those consequently would have been unable to access the Palatine Hill and Forum, as the guide had all the tickets.
2. The headsets sometimes took ages to translate the guides description of places of interest, and also many messages were repeated often throughout the tour, e.g. the one about entering and having bags searched, was coming through all the time we were in the Colosseum.
3. The guide tried her hardest to fix the headsets but she clearly had no idea what was wrong with them. Not her fault - they shouldn't have needed fixing.
4. Also, the guide only spoke Italian. Whilst the tour description said 'in 40 languages' it was not apparent on booking that it would be impossible to ask any questions other than in Italian. Most other guides that we overheard spoke several languages.
In summary, although we saw everything as expected, the information from the guide was very limited and untimely, e.g. we would get information about a particular place 5 minutes after we had gone elsewhere.
Not recommended unless you have a good understanding of Italian, and lots of patience for the headsets.

Thank you for sharing your opinion. Certainly, like any innovative technology, this one also needs time to be perfected, but we don't understand why you had to share false information.
The 5 minutes you mention are actually 10-20 seconds, and the phrases are not repeated unless you press the button to read the message, in which case it is not the app's fault.
We are sorry that you did not have a good experience, but we do not think it is right to disparage people's work in this way.

Great tour. The weather was warm. Need to make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle. Make sure to ask for a picture of where to meet the tour guide. It helps.

Alot of walking. Alot of stairs. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the Colosseum. Beautiful. Unfortunately for us that is the only part of the tour we could do.

First, the good: our tour guide was AMAZING! she was knowledgeable and even willing to help with suggestions for lunch after the tour, going as far as walking us there.
The bad: we received an email prior to the tour asking if we would be agreeable to an italing spoken tour that was translated into English by AI. That was all the info. Sure. No problem. Then the morning of the tour, earbuds start getting handed out. People with hearing aids cannot also wear earbuds. Alternative option: don’t use the buds, just hold the speaker of the phone up to your ear. Okay, that could work. Unfortunately, most people’s earbuds didn’t work, so almost everyone was on speaker, in several languages. The coliseum is quite crowded, so there wasn’t always room to move away from people and if you wear hearing aids, you know that some sounds overtake others. Hearing the tour, unless I was able to be next to the tour guide while she was speaking was sketchy. My whole group had complaint about the AI version of the tour. Next time we would just book a private tour. This felt more like Viator was just trying to save a buck by putting all languages in the same tour.

Thank you for sharing your opinion. This system is new and can sometimes cause connection problems due to the large number of people inside the Colosseum. In any case, the translation is performed correctly; it is just a delay of a few seconds that can sometimes occur. Everything will be resolved shortly.

We were giving the wrong meeting place in our email with our tickets. Our guide Mario was very nice,but the audio equipment didn't work properly. It was nice to see the sites,but unfortunately we didn't get to hear the history.

Colosseum tour the Good the Bad and the Ugly
The Good. Mario the tour guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable and tried. A Good or Bad was that the tour was to start at 9:15 and they waited for people until 9:45
The Bad was that they used what seemed to be a iPhone 8 or so as a translation device. He spoke on his phone in Italian and 10 seconds later it was in English or whatever ever your device was set at. This caused a less than free imparting of what we were seeing a 2 or 3 sentence, the translation a pause and then new information. Not ideal but not terrible. The terrible comes in the ugly.
Be warned and not an issue with the tour company there is lot of walking and a lot of steps.
The UGLY
THE DEVICES
They were constantly malfunctioning and Mario had to stop and fix and some could not be fixed. This caused a serious delay and the tour was not completed until 1 pm.
The malfunction of the devices caused some participants to leave. We did want to proceed up Palentine hill and the guide was unaware that we were no longer with them
The venue was great. The guide was good. The method of it being a guided tour was minus 3 on a 10 point scale
A partial refund would be nice.

thank you for sharing your opinion, we are sorry to read this review also because we informed you that you could have received the entrance tickets and you accepted this solution, in fact we sent them to you and you were still able to enter the Colosseum.
You could have simply refused the alternative proposal and you would have received a full refund instead of the partial refund we gave you, and you could have bought another tour since there are so many operators who do that.

Colosseum is spectacular and a must see - but this trip was shambolic at best for the first hour - no organisation , we wasted 40 mins on top of incorrect start time, we booked 9:30 tour , entered more like 11:00 , clearly different start times were grouped together, there was issue with under 18 in group ticket and none of the party had the expected QR code the guide said we should have been sent.
Disorganised ! We have fortunately done this trip before which was infinitely better!it does not include the forum and palatine hills - one or other it would seem. Choose your provider very carefully - in this instance we did not get what we were expecting - time or content.

This tour was exceptional, however, make sure you can climb steps! There were so many steps but the tour was educational, fun and had beautiful views! Our tour guides were fantastic ~ Andre and Giuseppe (I think).
