I did this bike tour with my 11 year old son and we both absolutely loved it! Lorenzo was a fantastic guide who relayed interesting stories along the way. He made sure everyone was happy and comfortable. The e-bikes were very easy to ride and operate. I loved getting out of the city and experiencing this scenic ride. There were many beautiful sights to see. Absolutely recommend!

This was hands down my favorite experience in Rome. Alex was an excellent tour guide - friendly, funny, and knowledgeable. We e-bikes through the old Appian Way, got some outdoor exercise, and stopped for a delicious lunch. It was a great way to experience Rome outside of the crowded museums and popular tourist spots. I would highly recommend this experience!

Itinerary

Meet your guide and small group directly at the bike shop a short distance from the Colosseum in central Rome. Upon arrival, strap on your helmet and get fitted for your e-bike. Then follow your guide for the short stretch through the city to reach the ancient walls, where you’ll pass through Porta San Sebastiano and enter the quiet Parco della Caffarella.

Pedal along the Appian Way, once one of the major roadways of the ancient world, as you take in Roman ruins and the lush countryside. Admire the remains of towering aqueducts, lavish villas, and noble mausoleums that line the route through the Ancient Appian Way Archaeological Park.

If you've opted to upgrade, you can also fit in a visit to the macabre Catacombs. A boxed lunch is also offered as part of the extended tour.

Finally, return to the city by way of the Circus Maximus and Baths of Caracalla, two of the most impressive Roman ruins inside the ancient walls, until you reach the bike shop to drop off your e-bike and helmet.

Forever memories and photo opportunities

Robin_P, Mar 2026
It is some bumpy country roads. It helps if you can partially stand up on the pedals during the rougher ancient roads. I would bring a small bottle of water with you. The bikes have a small enclosed basket to hold a bottle, jacket, and camera.

Beautiful day out and about

Vanessa_T, Mar 2026
It was a fun activity to discover other parts of the city and in particular this ancient road. How much history! Fun to do this in small groups and with some interesting information learned along the way. My only small complaint is that our guide didn’t offer to take pictures as we were about to leave the trail / road so we missed out on this opportunity . Otherwise a gorgeous day that I’d highly recommend

Great experience outside the city walls

Richard_J, Mar 2026
The folks at Roma Starblke are very accommodating, friendly, and knowledgeable. The route is quite diverse in scenery and the countryside is beautiful. They do a great job taking care of you and talking about the great sights you visit. The bikes do all the work for you so you can really enjoy the ride. Fantastic way to get a whole other experience of the city.

The best “active” activity in Rome.

George_S, Mar 2026
In a sentence, the best “active” activity in Rome. A day full of nature, history and fun. Alex, our tour guide was the epitome of resiliency, strength and wisdom 😉.

Cicero on Wheels!

Karen_C, Mar 2026
Our tour was with Alex from Roma Star Bike. Alex is more of a storyteller than a facts and figures tour guide. His ability to bring meaning to the sites he shows you is a unique talent. Alex is compelled to make you think deeper about where you are, he is like a Cicero on wheels! This tour was one of the highlights of our visit to Rome and I highly recommend it. Thank you Alex and Roma Star Bikes!!🤗

We took this tour on Friday, March 13. Alex was our tour guide - from the beginning, he was very attentive to make sure we were all able to get the hang of the e-bikes. There were frequent stops, where he provided stories and information about what we were seeing. The tour included a stop at the Catacombs, where we seamlessly joined a scheduled English-speaking tour group. After the Catacombs stop, there was a lunch stop at an Italian country club - delicious! On our particular tour, it began raining quite heavily during the last hour. Alex was very professional about it all, and gave us options as to how to finish out the tour when it appeared that we would have to "ford" a deep section of water: go back and go a different way, or weather through it with wet shoes. We chose the latter, and despite the rain it was a very memorable and fun experience. Would highly recommend Roma StarBike!!

Excellent adventure on powerful e-bikes with plenty to recommend it. Our guide was fun, kind and informative and this was such a delight getting to learn yet more history of Rome whilst away from the crowds and up in the countryside.

Fantastic experience

Julia_W, Mar 2026
Absolutely incredible! Exhilarating, informative, and fun. Such a great way to explore parts of Rome you wouldn’t normally see. 10:/10 recommend especially if you have older kids that need some activity! Our guides were so great with my two boys, kept us safe and having fun the whole afternoon. Riding bikes next to history? Where else do you get to do that

4 houe tour.

Toured rhe Appian Way and saw lots of old historical structures. Went into the country side on bike paths. Our guide was absolutely wonderful. If I could give him 6 stars, I would. Highly recommend this company for their tours.

This was such a nice way to spend the day. Our guide Gio was great! She was very engaging and knowledgeable. Her English was great, very easy to understand.

Good time in the countryside.

Kelly_A, Mar 2026
It was a great way to see another part of Rome. But be warned about the ancient roadway, it could leave some people sore and bruised from the very bumpy roadway. Chris did a wonderful job stopping at sites along the way and giving insight information. When we stopped at the aqueduct park it was awesome to see such structures still stand today that were built to move such an amount of water. This is when it started to rain so we waited under some trees, luckily no lightning, for it to lighten. Eventually, we set off but running a little behind for lunch stop so we had to step up the pace. Unfortunately, due to the rain the ground was wet and muddy and the bikes had no fenders, so there was mud being kicked up on you. So, a person might want to think about the weather forecast and clothing options when you take this tour. But it didn’t faze the overall tour. Everyone had a good time.

Great time

Bobbie_S, Feb 2026
It was a great tour. We did the 4 hour experience. Saw many sights and our guide was knowledgeable. It was low season and they didn’t cancel on us even though it was just my husband and I. Even though it is an E bike it is still a physical tour.

Michele excellent tour guide

Lonnee_H, Feb 2026
Excellent bike tour with Michele. He informed us about so much history and we were able to view hidden parts of Rome

Wonderful!

Judy_M, Feb 2026
This experience was the highlight of my trip to Rome! We had perfect weather, which for February was lucky! Our guide, Gio, was very well knowledged- she even has a degree in the Classics and archeology, and had been at some of the digs we went past on our tour. She was very flexible and worked well when our route was blocked by a fallen tree- she knew a great work around that allowed us to see everything we wanted to, and then even a bonus stop!

I have done this activity previously . I feel it’s very refreshing to go outside the city away from crowds and spend few hours while exercising your leg muscles .

My Favorite day in Rome

Crystal_B, Dec 2025
This was hands-down our favorite part of the trip so far! Getting out of the crowded city and feeling the sun on your face was exactly what we needed. It was absolutely beautiful! The ride can cause a little anxiety in the beginning as you maneuver through the streets, but Alex was the most patient and reassuring guide. He was down to earth, extremely kind, funny, and so informative. He even took the time to remember our names (a group of 14 that included a 6 yr old) and to give our group praise because he enjoyed his day with us. Riding a bike, even an electric one, is a physically demanding activity. Please take the time to read the description before booking the tour and then complaining the whole time to the guide because its hard, you're tired, your butt hurts, etc... You are riding a bike for several hours with some rough terrain and like most tours, you don't eat or drink until closer to the end time. It's not their fault if you did not come prepared so don't blame them or be rude to the group you're with.

Beautiful scenery and great to get out of city

Liz_H, Dec 2025
My teenage boys had the best time. They loved the e-bikes and going off road. The bikes were uncomfortable particularly the seats especially for 50 year old Mum.

Biking Through History

Ray_S, Nov 2025
This is an amazing experience. The bike ride is very picturesque. And the catacombs take the tour up another notch.

Bike ride with Christopher

Joanne_K, Nov 2025
My son and I had a wonderful experience with our guide, Chris. The ride was out of the city center and along an ancient road. Chris was very informative answering our questions and we never felt rushed or overwhelmed. He allowed time for us to take photos and to made sure we were safe.

Great day exploring Rome in a different way than the usual

ReubenD_R, Nov 2025
Great bike ride, excellent guid, a little nervous riding Rome roads but felt safe! Our guide Chris was knowledgeable, fun, and did a great job getting us through the challenging Rome traffic. We felt safe and really enjoyed the biking. Never a difficult ride due to the path but a great way to visit the aqueducts away from the usual tourist crush. A fun lunch and a really interesting crypt tour was a bonus. Would recommend Chris and this tour to anyone!

Tom_V, Nov 2025
If you can get Iman as a guide... you have a well informed and entertaining guide who takes the safety and well being of his customers very seriously. It was not only a pleasure hearing the interesting history of the Via Appia, but also to see an experienced cyclist guide at work, giving clear instructions along the route and genuinely caring about other riders in the group and their physical well being.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Thank you Top for your kind words. All the guides that we have are knowledgable and skilled as well as Iman. He is additionally a historian. We're happy that you've had a great time

A fun and memorable experience!

Aoife_M, Nov 2025
Cycling the Appian way was an amazing way to spend a day in Rome, gets you out of the crowds in the centre for a few hours. The E-bikes were fun and easy to use. Our tour guide Ava was lovely and very friendly. Would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who visits Rome!

Response from Host, Nov 2025

It's pleasing to read your beautiful feedback. We are happy that you have enjoyed this experience All the best

Fun but a little rugged

Mark_T, Nov 2025
We had a great day. This is a lot of biking and some of it takes some skill- navigating in traffic, down hill on tight dirt trails, and inavigating huge cobblestones. The stones on the Appian way are bigger than dinner plates with deep crevices between, Sometimes you can ride in the dirt along side but not always. It requires some quick stops and there lots of other bikers on the roads and trails that are not patient! Our guide Ava was very knowledgeable and took care of everyone, even a few that needed minor first aid! The description refers to a box lunch but actually was a delightful simple meal in a pleasant sit down restaurant. We also visited the catacombs and that was good too. Highly recommend- but if you haven’t been on a bike for many years this is not the tour for you.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

What a detailed feedback! We appreciate your time Mark. And we're happy that you've had a great experience

Fun way to spend a few hours on something very different

Noel_F, Oct 2025
Our guide was Iman, a really nice young fella who was attentive and patient all day long. The bikes were a little clunky but effective on the hills and did the job. I thought it was an excellent day out and so different and rewarding from what the usual tourist routine is in Rome. Give it a go...

Great tour - great guide - highly recommend

Halla_S, Oct 2025
After some days in very crowded city, it was wonderful to get on a bike and see a totally different side of Rome. Our guide, Iman, was a confident group leader and really knows the history of the area and how to tell it in an interesting way. Beautiful places, ancient roads and ruins, magnificent aquaducts, fresh air and some excercise - and fascinating history to go with it, what could be better?

Excellent tour

Melissa_H, Oct 2025
We greatly enjoyed our ebike tour through the Aurelian walls, past aqueducts, and down the Appian way. Our guide, Alex, was exceptional. As well as giving us biking instructions and making sure we were comfortable riding, he constantly checked in as we biked through the crowded streets. This tour was very active, involving a lot of biking, much of it through parks and uncrowded areas. Alex made a number of stops, and was excellent at providing context and significance for the antiquities we were seeing, information on Roman and medieval history, impacts on the sites, and anecdotes about the past. He was very entertaining, knowledgeable, and passionate about the places we were visiting. Riding on the Appian Way was a unique experience and you could not find a better guide than Alex. Highly recommended.
