Overview
Seasoned guides explain whale behavior on this tour from Maui aboard a super raft, which gets you out to the whales faster than a traditional boat. Maui whale watching runs from December to April when migrating humpbacks return to the marine sanctuary. Depart from Maalaea Harbor and listen for the sounds of these marine mammals via underwater hydrophone.

We had an amazing afternoon on this trip! Even though the other passengers booked weren’t able to make it, our tour still happened. Chloe, the naturalist, and the captain, Estevan, were both knowledgeable and attentive. We saw plenty of whales, learned about the whale population in Maui, got to hear the whale songs through a hydrophone (and were also provided with great sandwiches and juices.) Would highly recommend booking with them!

What a wonderful excursion! We saw several whales. Some just peaking out of the water but others were full back and some tail flutes! Amazing. Staff were very friendly and informative. Definitely rate this high fives!

We loved this raft. Absolutely spotless. Great comfortable seats too. We saw lots of Whales and the young lady ( sorry I forgot your name ! ) and Ryan were so knowledgeable about the Whales which made it really interesting.

Honestly I don’t know if we could’ve had a better time unless we were riding the whales. I mean they came under the boat. Saw SO many up close and I mean we could not have had a better experience. The raft was fun because we got to be right there with them that we could practically touch them.

The smaller boat made the experience very positive. There were about 15-20 of us on the raft, so we weren't crowded and could easily move from one side of the boat to another. We had a number of sightings (mostly tails and spouting water), which made for an exciting adventure. The crew of two were great and provided lots of helpful information about the whales.

We had a great boat ride to see the whales. We lucked into a fairly calm day in the water and it was very clear. It was nice to be in a smaller boat and there was plenty of room for everyone to move around and see the whales and get photos. We saw a number of whales throughout the tour. We saw a pretty impressive whale tail splash. We were able to hear the whales with the equipment on the boat. We were hoping to see one of the whales breach the water, but it didn’t happen- but the tail flip was second best. We will just have to take the tour again!!! Highly recommend this tour.

Unexpectedly good whale watch considering the wind. The boat handled the waves well... much smoother than most. Captain Ryan and Jen were great... very knowledgeable! Hard to find afternoon whale watches in the Kihei-Maalea area... We're coming back tomorrow! Nuff said!

This was an amazing whale watching cruise. The captain and his mate were very knowledgeable about the humpback whale so the cruise was very educational as well. We saw at least 30 whales and saw multiple breaches which were very breathtaking. The craft was comfortable and conducive to whale sightings from multiple vantage points. Would highly recommend this tour.

The tour left on time. We immediately saw whales. The captain and naturalist were absolutely wonderful, personable and knowledgeable. We had dozens of sightings. We learned so much and lived a life long dream. We will be going out on the Maui Reef Explorer again.

We saw whales breaching and showing off! It was Feb 3rd so the beginning of the good part of the season. All in all we must have seen about 20 whales within 100 yards. One pair even swam to us and went under the boat!
Our crew was fun and the boat was really great. Fast and comfortable. I would do it again in season for sure!

The boat is comfortable and there are spaces to sit on the raft as well. Lots of nonalcoholic beverage choices that were nice and cold. The captain, Ryan, was very professional and made sure to move us to other places to see whales. Garrett, the first mate, told us a lot about whales and answered all our questions. I will definitely book with Maui Reef Adventures when we go whale watching next year.
