Overview
Learn the basics of scuba diving and get the chance to do an introductory dive among Maui's coral reefs with this package. You'll get access to a PADI eLearning platform, enabling you to prepare for your first dive ahead of time. Once dive day rolls around, your instructor will go over what you've learned ahead of time and get you ready to get out in the water safely.

We meet at our shop which is located in Lahaina close to Baby Beach. There is parking for guests in our front lot and free overflow parking on Front Street. All shore divers must have their own transportation as we may have to drive to an alternate site if the conditions at Mala are not favorable.

Make sure you have no medical conditions!
The instructor Matt is an experienced diver, but took his time with us and made sure we were comfortable and safe. The dive itself was great. We dove around an old shipwreck and saw all kinds of fish, including a puffer fish, and two nurse sharks! Matt was very attentive during the dive and made sure everyone was doing good. A GREAT experience!

This was sold to us as a beginner dive, but in reality it was anything but. After a rushed and superficial theory briefing, we were immediately taken into deep water with almost no preparation. There was no proper shallow-water acclimatization, no time given to calmly adjust to the equipment, and no effort made to ensure we were comfortable breathing artificial air before being pushed forward.
As first-time divers, both my wife and I felt anxious and overwhelmed almost immediately. Instead of slowing things down—as any responsible instructor should—the instructor showed clear impatience, creating even more stress. We were never given the chance to get comfortable with the gear in waist-deep water, which is basic protocol for beginners. This alone made the experience unsafe and mentally distressing.
On top of that, the Dive Maui team expects customers to carry full scuba gear on their backs and walk a significant distance to the beach. This gear is extremely heavy, especially for beginners who are not trained to handle it properly. My partner suffered back pain for two full days afterward. This was never clearly communicated beforehand, and no assistance or alternatives were offered.
The entry into the water was equally unacceptable. The instructor repeatedly rushed us, telling us to move faster over sharp, uneven rocks, while wearing heavy gear and already feeling unsteady. This is reckless behavior, especially when dealing with new divers who are already nervous and physically burdened.
At no point did we feel supported, guided, or reassured. Instead, we felt pressured, rushed, and ignored. A beginner diving experience should build confidence and trust. This did the opposite. It felt like the goal was to move people through as quickly as possible, not to ensure safety or comfort.
This experience left us shaken, uncomfortable, and deeply disappointed. Diving is supposed to be exciting and memorable—instead, this was stressful and borderline unsafe. Dive Maui should seriously reconsider advertising beginner lessons if they are unwilling or unable to provide proper beginner instruction.
If you are new to scuba diving, DO NOT go here. You deserve instructors who are patient, attentive, and prioritize safety over speed.
I strongly feel this experience did not match what was promised, and I want my money back.

I would like to clarify a few important points for context.
This experience was booked as a Discover Scuba Diving program, which is specifically designed as an introductory experience — not a certification course — and includes required eLearning completed prior to arrival. The in-person briefing is meant to review that material, confirm understanding, and explain the dive plan and equipment, rather than re-teach the full academic portion from scratch.
All participants are required to be comfortable swimming and floating independently. During your session, it became apparent that this requirement was not being met, which understandably made the experience more stressful and limited what the instructor could safely proceed with. While our instructors are trained to support new divers, successful participation does require a baseline level of water comfort.
Regarding equipment transport and site access: the dive site used does require walking equipment to the entry point. This is clearly outlined during booking and is common for many shore dive locations on Maui. Unfortunately, there is no legal or physical way to drive equipment closer to the water at this site, nor is it feasible or safe for instructors to carry multiple full sets of gear for guests. We do, however, successfully conduct beginner dives at this location daily.
As for the water entry, the instructor’s priority is always safety, timing the entry to minimize surge and ensure everyone enters efficiently. While this can feel rushed when nerves are high, it is done to reduce risk on uneven terrain rather than increase it.
Once in the water, your partner chose to end the dive early, which the instructor fully supported. You initially opted to continue, but then decided to return to shore together — a decision that was respected immediately. The remaining participants completed their dive and had a positive experience.
We truly regret that this experience did not align with what you were hoping for. If at any point you felt dissatisfied and were seeking a refund or alternative resolution, reaching out to us directly would have given us the opportunity to discuss the situation and explore possible solutions at the time. We are always open to constructive conversations and do our best to address concerns when they’re brought to us.
That said, safety decisions, site limitations, and participant readiness all play a significant role in how an introductory dive unfolds. We take feedback seriously and continuously evaluate how we communicate expectations to ensure guests can make informed decisions before booking.

This was an amazing experience and a highlight of the trip. Doing a discovery scube experience seems pretty crazy but it went really well. There is a short online training that was texted before the scuba time that just went over the basics. Those same basics are gone over again in person once you arrive for the scuba experience (the first hour).
Once you are suited up and ready to go in the water it is a short walk to the beach and then a walk into the ocean before putting on the fins and testing out breathing under water.
My wife had a little bit of a panic attack when attempting the first breaths underwater and considered heading back to land, but Matt (the instructor) was able to talk her through the worries and she successfully completed the scuba dive.
After diving down about 10 feet we practiced a few techniques of removing and retrieving the mouthpiece. This is a little intimidating but helps to get comfortable with everything.
We then cruised around underwater for like 45 minutes. We saw a school of Rays, giant sea turtles, multiple schools of fish and a shark hanging out.
One of the best experiences, would definitely do this again and recommend to others. I am planning to get certified so that I can continue to more scuba adventures.

It was great! Matt (our instructor) was very great at teaching us the basics and keeping us safe. We got to swim along some awesome coral reef systems and see a lot of different sea life. Even saw a few sharks! Absolutely would recommend!

This was my second time diving and my brother's first time. Its was absolutely amazing. Our dive instructor was very knowledgeable and wonderful to work with. During our dive we seen 100's of different marine life. We also had the pleasure of coming in contact with 2 white tale sharks 1 was about 7 feet and the other was about 5 feet long. This was absolutely the best experience I have had in the water and I will make sure to come back.

We had Joe as our certified diver and we are very pleased with the experience. Joe was professional, patient, and made us feel completely safe underwater. The visibility was great, and we saw beautiful coral, colorful fish, and sea turtles and few sharks. Highly recommend this dive center to anyone looking for a memorable underwater adventure!

Perfect dive for first timers. Our instructor/guide Abby was a great teacher and so friendly. I had a hard time with my mask and adjusting to breathing at first and she was very calm and patient, I trusted her completely and felt very safe with her! Once underwater she constantly checked in to make sure myself and my husband were doing well. Great experience

Matt was a great instructor, we had no experience diving, he was there to help us when needed while also giving us a good lesson so we learned to do this by ourselves without any fear. This was a super fun experience!

I need a refund. I don’t know how else to tell Viator. I booked this for Sunday August 3, it got canceled due to weather. I rebooked for Monday August 4, it got canceled for weather. The operator said I am owed a refund and to contact Viator to get it.

They don't provide PADI test until the last minute. You may need doctors consent if you have medical issues. 2 of the 3 had this problem and a refund was not issued.

When we send the PADI medical questionnaire and course materials in advance, participants are expected to complete them ahead of time so that, if there are any medical issues, there’s enough time to obtain a doctor’s clearance.

Scuba diving is hard work! There is nothing like the joy of seeing the ocean as a fish! First breath underwater is scary and if you are with the Maui dive team, PADI experienced instructor you will have memories that will always be with you. So worth the fees and remember to include a great tip! MATT, we owe you a huge Kudos! So patient and caring. He took so much time with us just to ensure that we had a great experience. Experience of a lifetime. This scuba dive was so amazing and beautiful! The dive site was SICK. But most of all our guide - Scott - was aces. He was kind, funny, patient and most importantly knowledgeable. My husband and I felt safe in the water with him nearby even fighting through a couple of nerves. The whole thing was great and worth every penny. Thank you Scott for a wonderful adventure.

For the beginners course, no in pool training prior to going to the ocean the training is in the ocean, so you better be comfortable with the water and there are a fair amount of rocks on the ocean floor to get to the dive. Once below was a wonderful experience and I saw lots of turtles, a shark, and lots of colorful fish. Definitely worth it for me, but my daughter did not feel comfortable doing the dive and I feel the instructor gave up on her too soon she sat and waited for me to come back.

Abbey was just fantastic. The first time I scuba dived, I almost died. The whole experience under Abbey's guidance gave me a new kind of confidence and now I am all set to get certified. She kept checking in on us, and made sure all of us learnt the important tricks on the surface before taking us underwater.

My two adult daughters (both mid-20s) had done a few dives in their teens in Europe but never were PADI certified. We did the Discover Scuba dive together on the Wharf and it was perfect! Probably saw 30 turtles- many within arms reach. 2 sharks as well. Joe did a great job refreshing my daughters on their skills before we went down- superb instructor and patient with beginners but not overly controlling. I’ve been diving in Egypt, Mexico, Spain, and Oahu and this was on par or better than all four.

Our instructor Joe was very professional, friendly, patient and helpful as this was our first time doing scuba. We had a great and long tour of the reef he showed us. We saw several turtles, schools of fish and an eel. Would totally recommend this for anyone who wants to try scuba or just get a good tour of the reef.

Let’s be clear about what happened. Our team spent three days trying to contact you to ensure your eLearning and medical forms were completed. This is a critical step to avoid exactly the kind of issues that occurred. Two hours before your trip, we finally reached you and discovered you failed the medical. No problem—you could have seen a doctor to get cleared.
Then, 20 minutes before the trip, your friend also failed the medical, and you decided to cancel everything and demand your money back. This was after we made every effort to ensure all issues were addressed well in advance.
Our 48-hour cancellation policy is in place to protect both our business and other customers. Despite that, you disputed the charge with your credit card company and WON, meaning you got your money back. So, calling us thieves when we followed policy and you still walked away with your $300 is, frankly, inaccurate.
We take customer service seriously, but we also expect fairness. If you’d like to have an honest conversation, feel free to reach out.

The whole experience was nice from the instruction to the afterward every step. The instructor was helpful and we were there for a one-in-one section experience. I have to admit that the most difficult thing was the first time you get wet and go underwater. After that you can enjoy the breathtaking(you should breath deep and a low anyway) scene underwater. The place was like a public beach but the instructor just know how to go to the croals and turtles staying. Really amazing experience for me as I could hardly swim in pool without assistance.
