It was our final stop in Alaska, bringing to a close an unforgettable trip filled with glaciers, breaching whales, helicopter flights, and enough incredible food to make my scale question our friendship.
By the time we reached Ketchikan, we wanted something different. Instead of another crowded excursion, we wanted to disappear into the rainforest and experience Alaska at a slower pace.
That turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip.
We booked a private rainforest eco-tour with Zach from Take a Hike Tours, and from the moment we met him, it was clear this wasn't going to be just another walk in the woods. Before we even started, Zach agreed to changing the pickup location to avoid the port traffic and the chaos of having six or seven cruise ships in town. It was a small touch that set the tone for a relaxed, personalized experience.
He took us to what locals call the "end of the road," where we stepped onto an easy trail that immediately immersed us in the rainforest. Unlike many guides who simply keep everyone moving, Zach encouraged us to slow down and really notice what surrounded us. Along the way, he pointed out fascinating plants, explained how the towering trees had grown over centuries, and shared the delicate ecological relationships that make this temperate rainforest so unique.
We crossed crystal-clear creeks that looked more like rivers, wandered beneath towering canopies more than 100 feet overhead, and eventually emerged onto a secluded beach that felt like a hidden corner of Alaska few visitors ever get to experience.
What made the tour memorable wasn't just the scenery—it was Zach. His knowledge, enthusiasm, and genuine love for the natural world transformed a beautiful hike into a fascinating conversation about one of the most remarkable ecosystems on Earth. You could tell he wasn't simply leading tours; he was sharing a place he truly cares about.
If you're visiting Ketchikan and want an authentic, uncrowded experience away from the souvenir shops and cruise ship crowds, I can't recommend Take a Hike Tours highly enough. The hike was easy, the company was outstanding, and the memories will last far longer than another refrigerator magnet.
Some excursions entertain you. This one reconnects you with nature.

We had an amazing private tour with Zachary! He took us to beautiful hidden spots away from the crowds, making the experience truly special. He was incredibly knowledgeable and shared fascinating facts about Alaska’s nature and wildlife throughout the tour. Zachary went above and beyond to make sure we had the best experience possible. He is professional, friendly, and genuinely passionate about what he does. We highly recommend Take A Hike Tours!

Zachary was great! First, we happened to be the only ones who booked the hike that day and he still showed up to give us a great experience. I’ve had other company’s cancel my tours if they didn’t have the # of bookings they wanted. Second, I wasn’t feeling well and part way through didn’t feel I could complete the hike. He did a 360 shift and took us to multiple places around the island to see wildlife and other things and still made it a great day! We appreciated his kindness and flexibility.
