Our guide was very informative and engaging. He ran over about 20 minutes because he had so much information to share. We really enjoyed the tour and do recommend it to friends.

Very knowledgeable tour guide. He’s clearly passionate about the city and its history, and that comes across in the tour. He asked us about anything we wanted to see and worked those pieces into the tour. We had a fantastic time!

The tour guide was 20 minutes late to the tour. He spoke very quickly and was difficult to understand. There were a lot of “racist” undertones to his stories, which included comments made by his family members.

I enjoyed the information that Al provided, especially his family's reactions to Northerners and other remnants of the Civil War era.
However there were times it was difficult to hear him, given his Southern accent and the fluctuating volume of his humorous asides. Speak up, Al. We want to hear ALL the humor you inject into the tour. : )

We left about a third of the way into the tour. The guide started by spending a lot of time discussing carrying firearms in South Carolina, even about his mother carrying one. It made me wonder if he was armed. In the cemetery, he pointed out a base relief sculpture of a young woman buried there noting that she seemed to have large breasts. He then speculated that she may have died of a chest cold. His speech was difficult to follow and he had a tendency to finish his comments with a strange laugh. Luckily, there was an Irish pub along the route.

It’s a bit disappointing and disrespectful to get a cancellation at 4:45 pm for a tour that was supposed to be at 2:30 pm.
We showed up well in time for the 2:30pm tour, waited over 15 minutes without any notification of cancellation. We asked the other tour guides who said Al can sometime run late. So we waited, only to get an email at 4:45pm saying the tour was cancelled because we didn’t book in time??? If that was the case close the portal so that pleoke cannot book it.
While it’s no sweat off Al’s back and he’ll do more tours, my wife and I are really disappointed with the lack of professionalism.

The guide did not show up. Call and SMS to the tour operator went unanswered. Five people missed their tour.

Al really knows Charleston and is an entertaining, informative, and hospitable guide. We especially enjoyed his depth of knowledge about the amazing architecture in the French Quarter. And he gave us well more time than our tour was scheduled for—so wear your best walking shoes!

Very Informative and great to see all the old homes. Only issue was the guide was very hard to understand
Joy_B, Sep 2025
This tour was a great overview of the city and it's historic role in the Civil war. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable.

Guide is well informed.
However, he spoke too fast and often difficult to understand at times. Disappointed overall.

It was ok but he talked to the buildings not the group. I would not recommend but it wont let me say no.
ORIT_F, Mar 2025

Interesting, felt he knew and loved the city. Good length. Able to book the day of when other plans fell through.
Laura_T, Dec 2024
Very knowledgable guide. Meeting spot was well organized. Tour took us to areas we would never have seen in our own.
Marcia_G, Dec 2024
The city is beautiful and the tour took us to areas we would not find on our own. However there was a group of 19 and Al took a larger group and Bart had a group of 6. We heard many personal stories and saw many of his friends houses. We would have liked more Charleston history
Mary_O, Dec 2024
Our tour was excellent. Given by a native South Carolina local who had personal stories to add to the history which was an unexpected plus. Very knowledgeable.
Nancy_E, Dec 2024
We had a wonderful tour with Alfred Ray. He is very knowledgeable about Charleston SC and kept us entertained for the entire tour. The history is fascinating. I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Charleston SC.

I went to the designated location at the designated time, and no one was there. I showed my e-ticket to another tour guide who was starting another tour at that same time and place, who confirmed I was in the right place at the right time, and that in fact a mistake must have been made by the booking company. So he was kind enough to allow me to join his tour for free, so it all worked out just fine.

We met with Bruce our tour guide, a native born Charleston gentleman. It was my husband and I and one other lovely woman from Westchester, NY. Bruce told us in advance he would be sharing his stomping grounds of where he grew up. We got such a great tour leading us down all sorts of secret walkways and alleys. A story with each stop that made each marker much more memorable. I would highly recommend the tour. We got to see parts of downtown Charleston that only a local could know about and share.
Erin_R, Oct 2024
Al was kind and informative! He took us all over and made sure my daughter was able to keep up with the group. It was nice to be in a small group and the ladies with us were great! Al gave us restaurant tips and suggestions.
Susan_C, Oct 2024
Our tour guide Al was a very pleasant historian, who knew everything you would want to know about Charleston‘s history. He answered our questions as we leisurely strolled through the city . One of the highlights was visiting Saint Michaels church.
Nechama_K, Sep 2024
Al gave us a lively, fascinating, and knowledgeable tour of Charleston and an overview of its history. His deep connections to the community provide an added dimension from the inside of Charleston life.
Sherry_G, Sep 2024
My first trip to Charleston and so much to do, so much to see, so many beautiful historic homes, so much lhistory. . .where does one start? A friend suggested a historic walking tour and she was right. Linda, our guide was so well versed and knowledgeable. She answered all questions and had great antidotes. I would not hesitate to take another of her tours
Deborah_K, Jun 2024
Our tour guide Al was very knowledgeable about the area and its history. We felt like we really learned a lot while getting to see highlights of the beautiful city environment
Glenn_S, May 2024
The guide was very knowledgeable about not only Charleston sights but its history. As a history buff I really enjoyed his input.
