Great day out

My original booking was cancelled however I was advised in advance and was offered an alternative. We set off on time and Jane was an excellent host providing a very informative commentary on the way. As my original booking was cancelled we were actually added to another group heading to a different plantation. The coach took a short detour to drop 3 of us at the Whitney Plantation as per my original booking. I felt very looked after and fully informed of the arrangements. The Whitney Plantation was an amazing experience and worthy of being in anyone’s itinerary. It was a self guided tour and easy to follow. The only downside was a turn in the weather which meant I had to move through the areas a little quicker than I would have liked but overall a great experience. The coach came back to collect us at the agreed time and we were driven to meet the rest of the coach party at Oak Plantation where we had ample time to obtain refreshments. Onwards from there we headed for the swamp tour. Whilst the swamp vehicle wasn’t what I was expecting it was a great trip nonetheless and our boat operator was excellent . We did get to see the alligators and other swamp wildlife and a great time was had .

An educational and moving experience, a must see

This was a very moving and educational experience. Seeing through the eyes of the enslaved people’s was very emotional. It’s a beautiful area. We did the self guided tour, which was perfect, we used the handheld device that they provided and told information about each part of the exhibits. We throughly enjoyed this tour. The bus ride there was comfortable and our guide Glen was very friendly and informative.

Highly recommend this tour!

This was such a great and informative tour! We were picked up at our hotel and our tour guide driver (I can’t remember his name) was a wealth of information! He talked about Hurricane Katrina, the swamps, the history of many different people that make up New Orleans and the different plantations in the area. The plantation tour was self guided and very informative! We were able to explore at our own pace. We even saw a baby alligator in the property while we were walking around! There is a gift shop on the plantation that has items made by women in Ghana. They had some beautiful jewelry, fans, headbands and many other items. My favorite gift store item is a small book of quotes from the children of the Whitney Plantation. There are many statues of children who lived on the plantation and the quotes are from those children. I highly recommend this tour!!

Great combo! Convenient tour!

Take the tour! So convenient- hotel pick up and driven to both locations, plantation and swamp tour. The muffuletta and mint julep at the plantation was great. The plantation tour and exhibits were educational. Captain Bobby, our swamp tour guide, was awesome! He pointed out the eagle’s nest, a yellow footed egret, and lured alligators with marshmallows. Got to hold a tiny baby alligator. Great experience!

This is a great tour. Viator always does a good job. We have taken some of their European tours and were never disappointed. The bus driver Monique was wonderful, courteous and helpful. All the Viator staff members are great!! This plantation finally satisfied my desire to see a large beautiful plantation mansion AND they made sure to discuss the lives and circumstances of the enslaved, greatly demonstrating just how wrong it was to finance a life on the backs of people held as chattel. AND the owners ended up going bankrupt with artificially low expenses because no one paid the enslaved. All the monetary value was in the enslaved and if they were sold to raise funds, just WHO would do all the work?? And this is totally aside from the moral issue of creating enslaved, for which they all went straight to Hell.

The drive to the plantation is about an hour long, but our guide Ed was very entertaining and informative along the way. They you have snacks at the plantation. Eat before you go. Hands down this is a must when visiting the new Orleans area. Very educational. the bookstore has much to offer as well.

Laura Plantation...a storytelling delight!

I had originally hesitated booking back to back plantation tours ...concerned it might be history overload for my family, but to the contrary, Laura plantation was a perfect complement to our tour of Oak Alley, just down the road. Our guide, Laura ( seriously, a fond coincidence!) was such a passionate storyteller! She brought the plantation to life by sharing the origin stories of the families who had dwelled there as well as the slaves who had built the place..brick by brick, plank by plank. I have arthritis, so it was challenging to stand and walk through a one hour plus tour, but my swollen feet and knees were well worth the experience. There was the occasional chair or bench on the way. Thankfully, the house is air-conditioned. The grounds has beautiful, fragrant flowers. Don't miss the lilac tree in the courtyard. Allergy sufferers: take your antihistamines.! Still, I highly recommend it for history buffs with a penchant for storytelling.

Excellent tour of Houmas House and Gardens

Excellent tour. The house and gardens are beautiful, especially at night when lit up. Our guide, Susanna, was knowledgeable and pleasant. We stayed at the Inn on the premises and toured the museum as well which was wonderful and extremely well done. Could have spent half a day there. Highly recommend.
