Laura Plantation provides a unique opportunity to learn about Louisiana’s Creole past, thanks to detailed surviving records kept by the family who lived here for four generations. The remarkably well-maintained estate is included on the National Register of Historic Places and the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail. Make your own way to the plantation, located an easy 1-hour drive from New Orleans along the Great River Road that follows the Mississippi.
Once you arrive, follow a knowledgeable guide on a tour of the plantation’s furnished, 24,000-square-foot (7,315-square-meter) main house, slave quarters, intricate gardens and sugar fields. Learn about the French-descended Duparc family who founded in the plantation in 1804. Much of what is known about the plantation’s inhabitants is gathered from the memoir of fourth-generation family member Laura Locoul, in addition to records discovered in the French National Archives.
The informative tour honestly addresses the difficult history of slavery as it existed in French colonial and American Louisiana through the end of the 19th century. The fully guided experience takes a close look at the various personalities of the plantation owners, plus the unique influences of the Creole culture that thrived in Louisiana for more than 200 years. After your tour, you can continue exploring independently with a visit to other plantations along the Great River Road.

Great tour. Very educational. The tour guide was excellent and very knowledgeable. Really enjoyed touring all the old places and seeing how they lived those days.

Thank you for visiting and for leaving us this positive review !

I had originally hesitated booking back to back plantation tours ...concerned it might be history overload for my family, but to the contrary, Laura plantation was a perfect complement to our tour of Oak Alley, just down the road. Our guide, Laura ( seriously, a fond coincidence!) was such a passionate storyteller! She brought the plantation to life by sharing the origin stories of the families who had dwelled there as well as the slaves who had built the place..brick by brick, plank by plank. I have arthritis, so it was challenging to stand and walk through a one hour plus tour, but my swollen feet and knees were well worth the experience. There was the occasional chair or bench on the way. Thankfully, the house is air-conditioned. The grounds has beautiful, fragrant flowers. Don't miss the lilac tree in the courtyard. Allergy sufferers: take your antihistamines.! Still, I highly recommend it for history buffs with a penchant for storytelling.

Thanks so much for this review. Laura will be delighted that you enjoyed her tour !

Beautiful surroundings, friendly people, and we learned a lot! You get a very interesting picture of all the different kinds of people who lived on the plantation, both free and enslaved.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Thank you for visiting and thank you for wanting to learn!

Was a very informative tour, however, expected it would have more information about the day to day life of the slaves on the plantation.
Response from Host, Dec 2025
Thank you for your input. We are in the process of revising the tour to include more and more stories & experiences of the enslaved that includes the reality of what life was like for them at this plantation.
Liann_M, Nov 2025
Be sure to look around when you go through because you do not get to go back and take a closer look.
Richard_W, Nov 2025
The tour provides an in depth look at the early Creole plantation life style. Our guide Amelia, is student of the period when the plantation was built and the following era.
Cheryl_C, Aug 2025
Our guide was fantastic! Enjoyed the history, probably the best plantation tour I’ve taken. So glad we went!
Laurence_J, Aug 2025
The guide and the tour were great but getting there was very expensive. The transportation costed us more than the actual price of the tour. We would not have done it if we knew
Response from Host, Aug 2025
We are so glad that you enjoyed the tour and the guide!
Laura Plantation does not provide transportation to our location, but instead partners with several different operators that provide guest transportation here if guests do not have the option to self-drive. That being said, I cannot comment directly on the cost of what transportation provider that you used as this will vary between each operator and Laura Plantation does not have control over those prices.

This was a very educational and insightful experience. I learned an awful lot of rather interesting and sad facts about this particular sugar plantation, and Lee was an expecent tour guide.

Our tour guide, Cameron, was excellent! He truly conveyed a sense of the people, the Creole culture, and what it was like to have lived at the plantation (for the owners and the slaves). Exceeded my expectations.
Response from Host, Jun 2025
It is our goal to recount the actual stories of the people who lived here, both enslaved and free. It sounds like Cameron did that and we are glad to have exceeded your expectations!
FrancesAnn_M, May 2025

Visiting the Laura Plantation was such an eye opening experience! Learning about history can be tough sometimes but Lindie was AMAZING and so informative! Her knowledge and expertise great. I highly recommend everyone take the tour and get a slightly deeper knowledge of history.
DEREK_H, Sep 2024
The contrast between the lives of the owners and slaves was excellently explained. And how the unfairness continues today.
Paulette_L, Aug 2024

nicole_E, Aug 2024
Laura Plantation was beautiful and I was excited about the tour. However, my tour guide Pam was not very friendly right from the start. We only had four people in the tour and right off, she was all business and rude stating that the next tour starts in 10 am and that she had no time to wait on people. She hurried talking and she was extremely difficult to understand because she talked so fast and unclear giving you no time to take in the place. She stated that we only get one shot at seeing the house from the front, so hurry up and take photos. Then we couldn't understand her over the sound of the fan in the cellar. We were not given the chance to walk around the property after the tour. I asked about the fruits on the trees cause she didn't explain anything about them. When I purchased two bottles of water in the store, the woman at the register was just as unfriendly as Pam. Very disappointing experience for the money I spent. I went to Destrehan Plantation the day before and my experience there was amazing with my guide Beverly. She was excited to have me and even asked some personal questions. She talked clear, took her time and made sure to let me know I can take my time looking around the property after the tour. I did not have this experience at Laura Plantation. Very disappointing. You should not have rude people who don't take their time talking working there.
Richard_D, Aug 2024
The tour guide was excellent and the house and grounds were beautiful. It was captivating to hear the stories of the people that had lived at Laura, and of the people who worked at Laura, the slaves who actually built the home and kept it running.
Joseph_M, Jul 2024
Tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Overall the whole tour left us knowing more about history while also being enjoyable.
LaTasha_S, Jun 2024
The tour guide was very passionate about the history of the plantation and articulated the information well. I learned a lot and recommend this tour to all. Especially since these things are not being taught in school anymore. They should emphasize the museum more as it is separate from the tour. As a black person, the more detailed lives of slaves and their descendants is much more interesting to me, integrates the background political status and how it affected the family. I like that it doesn't totally gloss over the horrible tradition of slavery.
Eric_N, Jun 2024
Great tour, the family history of this place is great! It’ll leave you sitting in awe connecting all the dots! Pam is a wonderful tour guide she knew her stuff and was hilarious!
Willie_U, Jun 2024
The guide was very knowledgeable! Pam took the time to explain the entire details of the plantation to each and every one of the tourists!
