    Itinerary

Travel to Mount Vernon, George Washington's beloved plantation home in Virginia, from Washington, DC.

Upon arrival, meet the guide at the Ford Orientation Center. This private tour can be customized to meet specific interests right from the outset. Begin with either a special short film that offers an overview of the important events in George Washington’s life or enjoy a narrated history from the tour guide while roaming through the garden and grounds of the estate. Then explore the 21-room mansion, getting an insider’s look at some of the places that are rarely seen on typical tours here.

Learn about the 18th-century, English-style garden, where Washington the landscaper reshaped walks, roads, and lawns, cut vistas through the forest and planted hundreds of native trees and shrubs. Optionally, visit the 4-acre Farm on the banks of the Potomac near the wharf. This is where Washington tested and implemented his progressive farming practices. Also, learn about the lives of some 100 field slaves who put his ideas into practice here.

Then visit the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center for a self-guided tour. This building features 23 galleries and theaters where visitors learn about Washington through interactive displays, an action-adventure movie, short films produced by the History Channel and more.

Food is available on site (own expense). Enjoy classic American favorites in a Colonial-inspired setting at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant or grab a quick meal or snack at the Mount Vernon Food Court.

Run, don’t walk to book a private tour with Gail!

Gail was extraordinary. One of the best tour guides of my life. She made Mount Vernon come alive and spent a ton of time with us. Cannot recommend her highly enough!

Very interesting tour with a lot of history and a very informative narration of the life of George Washington.

Gail was a superstar. Her knowledge of the entirety of Mount Vernon is incredible. This was a fun and educational thumbs up experience for the whole family.

    George Washington Would Be Pleased

Our Tour Guide, Mr. Marshall, was waiting for us when we arrived. He humorously explained what we would be doing on the tour. Everything was so smooth. We were not rushed and felt that we truly received a private tour by a knowledgeable, friendly guide. Being driven in a golf cart was an added bonus for those of us who are not as steady on our feet.

    Incredible Mt. Vernon private Tour

John was the most gracious ,knowledgeable and engaging guide! Would book this again, we enjoyed the tour so much.

    Great private tour

Gail our tour guide was lovely and was able to take us to portions of the home that are not open to the group tours, including up to the cupola and into the basement. It was well worth the extra $ to have the private tour!

Not a good value; make sure all areas are open!

Looking for the opportunity to tour the mansion - the add-on tickets were sold out for our preferred day - I booked this tour. Pricey for just 3 of us but since none of us have been out in the past year and limited time to visit, we plunged in. It wasn’t much different than the regular tour except we got a quick walk through the basement (not part of the regular tour). The 2nd floor was closed due to unexpected issues. Would I recommend this 1 hour tour? No. Just didn’t feel a bang for the bucks. But for our purposes and feeling a bit frivolous, it met our needs. The tour leader is one of the Mt Vernon tour staff and was very knowledgeable. Maybe once all areas are open then maybe I’d give it 4 stars.

This was an absolutely stellar tour. When you have someone as friendly, well-informed and articulate as Karen Menatti you are insured a memorable tour. Karen was also able to answer any questions we had. We left wishing we had more time to learn about other aspects of the estate and the Washingtons. We felt we knew much more about George Washington, the farmer and land owner, and about Martha Washington, the hostess and household manager. Thank you for offering such a wonderful learning experience. .

Pay the extra money and take the private tour. It's so worth it. My daughter was able to lay a wreath at Washington's tomb, we didn't have to wait in line, we were able to go into the basement of the home, and we were able to see the top cuppola. Our guide was so passionate about the history and the man who was George Washington. I cannot say enough about this tour. It was amazing.

We booked a private tour and it was well worth it. Our guide Gail K. was fabulous and we got to see some of the behind the scenes stuff. Also, we got to ride around the property on a golf cart which was good for us due to arthritis. It was a great place to visit on a beautiful day and there were not a lot of tourists. I definitely recommend this tour!

John did a great job. The whole family really enjoyed the experience. John also took great pictures and engaged the whole family. We stayed at the Embassy Suites in Old Alexandria and the trip down was easy and enjoyable as well. John was witty and made the tour memorable.

Our tour was wonderful.Viator did a horrible job with the booking and when I got to Mt. Vernon they had no record of the reservation. They have been having problems with the Viator booking co. The Mt. Vernon staff made it right. I will never book with Viator again!

Our tour was fantastic and our tour guide, Karen was great. We all really enjoyed seeing areas of the house that other people were unable to see. Holding the wreath for the Washington's at their tomb was so special. Well worth the cost!

This tour was really well done. Our guide was knowledgable and informative, and she was willing to adjust our time to focus on our main interests, which were the gardens and the highlights of the house. We got to go all the way upstairs in the house, which is closed to regular visitors, and we got to lay a wreath right on George Washington's tomb! Mount Vernon is definitely a must see, although you will need to be prepared for lots of school children, especially inside the house. The private guide helps you to navigate this crowd and expands on the commentary by the regular guides inside the house. This was definitely a highlight of our wonderful weekend in DC.

The guided tour by Marie was the highlight of the trip to DC. The tour was interesting, informative and paced well for the content and the temperature/terrain. Another plus was the ability to secure expedited access to the mansion. The tour sparked our interest in the Washington Family and in colonial American History. I wish we had 2 days -we could have easily filled 2 days. We missed the Grist Mill and Museum.
