Itinerary

Stroll with your guide from Piazza Barberini to the nearby Capuchin Crypt, where the mummified remains of Capuchin friars await. While listening to an audio guide, you’ll explore labyrinthine tunnels, hearing about the 18th-century monks who created the macabre surrounds.

Having piqued your interest in Rome’s quirkier sights, you’ll continue to the Domitilla Catacombs. It’s one of Rome’s largest catacomb sites, but you’ll find its standout frescoes and early Christian symbols quickly with your guide.

Next, comes a church that’s off the usual tourist trail. The Basilica dei Santi Silvestro e Martino ai Monti sits on top of ancient Roman ruins, and a look inside reveals layers of religious history. After admiring Baroque-era frescoes, an underground early Christian chapel, and more, your tour ends back at Piazza Barberini or by the Basilica of San Nicola in Carcere.

To experience Rome’s catacombs without the daytime crowds, upgrade to the evening after-tours tour instead.

Our tour guide Alain was very friendly and full of information! The crypts and the catacombs were very cool. Would do this tour again anytime.

Catacombs Tour

Michael_S, Apr 2026
I thouroughly enjoyed this experience. After several tours of major tourist cites this was a great change of pace. My guide Katarina was extremely knowledgeable about the early Christian and Roman practices related to death and history surrounding the sites. She was great at communicating this information and providing a positive atmosphere for the tour.

Rip off on national holiday

Richelle_M, Apr 2026
Rip off Told that due to national holiday we would visit not the Bascilica but a different church. We only got 2 of the 3 stops outlined in booking.

Not recommended. Don’t waste your time and money on this tour.

Bailey_K, Apr 2026
Would give 0 stars if possible. The tour guide who originally met up with us started talking to us about the plan for the day next to a busy road with heavy traffic and no one in the group could actually hear the plan for the day. We went to a boring monk museum with a boring audio guide. Visited a crypt for about 1 minute which seems insufficient for a “crypts and catacombs” tour. We left 45 minutes into the tour because we were so disappointed by the reality of this tour and when we told the tour guide we were leaving another person on the tour said we were making “the great escape”. Clearly others were misguided and disappointed with this tour as well. When I told the tour company they would not provide a refund. Please save your money and spend your valuable vacation time and money on a better trip than this.

Loved the crypt and catacomb tour!

Lindsey_M, Apr 2026
Loved the crypt catacomb tour! Our tour guide Ale was wonderful, she was kind and extremely knowledgeable about the areas we visited and Rome history in general! I learned a ton. Really loved our time here it was a great family experience! Highly recommend :)

Laura was very friendly...

Sophie_R, Apr 2026
Laura was very friendly and informative, very cheerful and really uplifted the mood. The sights were also good

Lots of fun

Fiona_M, Apr 2026
Quite varied and lots of fun. Not macabre at all. The catacombs were amazing. Good mix of history. Great tour guide.

Glad I didn’t miss this one!

Phyllis_L, Apr 2026
This is an unconventional tour and maybe not for everyone but the crypts are fascinating and the history of the catacombs worth hearing and seeing. Our tour guide Alessandra was passionate about the sites we toured and was able to talk expertly about them. I wouldn’t recommend this tour for anyone who is claustrophobic though. The 30 min bus ride to the catacombs was nice too because we were able to see sites outside of the historical downtown and was nice to be in a comfortable, air conditioned bus.

Do not miss! Hidden Rome gem!

Amy_S, Apr 2026
Barbara , our tour guide was excellent and full of information. It was over 3 hours of packed history. Teens will love this tour!!! The extent that our forefathers went to to protect the dead and the living is incredible. Mike's and Mike's of layered underground tombs. The crypts are a testament to a message that life is precious and we should live every minute. A moving experience and very appreciated.

Yaneria (spelling?) was a wonderful guide. Very knowledgeable and entertaining. We highly recommend this tour.

Highly recommended!!!

Tinamarie_D, Apr 2026
Adrian was a very informative tour guide. The bus was comfortable. I would recommend. Catacombs were my favorite!

Inside the catacombs is...

Craig_J, Apr 2026
Inside the catacombs is cold so take a jacket. We thought we would see bones. You don’t. You can only visit level 1 & 2 there is no human remains there. The human remains are in levels 3&4 which you do not get access to. The crypt museum is worth skipping and going straight to see the crypts to maximise time in there. The basilica on the way back isn’t great. Seems like it’s just a convenient place for the bus to drop off. Lots of better basilica’s to see for free at your leisure.

Disturbing and Interesting

AMANDA_R, Apr 2026
I loved this tour with Alain. He was very personable and knowledgeable. Some of the things we saw were very unusual and made you think. Definitely take the tour to experience it yourself.

Wonderful tour

JoAnne_K, Apr 2026
My partner picked out this activity. I was a little hesitant about it, but it was a very interesting tour. Cat (I believe was short for Catarina) was a great guide. She was easy to understand and shared some great info about the crypts and catacombs. One thing I wish that I had read the fine print earlier…since you enter churches on the tour, they request you cover knees and shoulders. My daughter and I ended up tying our sweaters/jackets around our legs to cover our knees. My fault for not reading the tour details when we received them.

Andrea was so...

Kimberley_V, Apr 2026
Andrea was so knowledgeable. He apparently knows his stuff and loves his job. He gave us a lot of history and stories on this tour. We definitely know a lot more about Roman history than when we started

Amazing experience with Antonino

martinastrong, Apr 2026
We had a great experience on this tour definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Rome. We started at the Fontana del Tritone, then visited the Catacombs, the Basilica dei Santi Silvestro e Martino ai Monti, and finished at the Capuchin Crypt, which was definitely the highlight. The bone displays were amazing. Our guide Antonino was brilliant, really knew his stuff and was clearly passionate about the history. Would definitely recommend.

Emiliano was an amazing tour guide. He kept us actively engaged in a tight space. The three stops were very different but connected them back.

Lynsie_V, Apr 2026
Maria and Emiliano were so funny and the kids enjoyed it. Not too much walking and it wasn’t scary at all

Worth a look

Adam_D, Apr 2026
A really interesting tour of some of the stranger sites in Rome with a very funny and good tour guide

Underground with Alain

Joan_O, Apr 2026
This experience provides history and hidden locations that you may not otherwise find. Our guide, Alain, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Alain took time to ensure everyone’s questions were answered.

Worth a visit

Jody_B, Apr 2026
We booked 4 adults for the Crypts and Catacombs through Viator with City Wonders taking us. We all had a great time. Our tour guide Andrea was very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions asked. I would have liked a little more time at the Crypts but understand time is limited and weuse a bus to the catacombs. I would recommend this tour.

Great Tour!
