Meet your guide in the heart of Vatican City to begin your walking tour of one of Rome’s most legendary landmarks. Starting in St Peter’s Basilica, walk over to 2000 years of history. The tour will end in the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican.
Throughout the centuries, the humble church grew into the ornate icon it is today—the holiest of Roman Catholic sites. With your guide, walk around to see Renaissance art like Michelangelo’s La Pietà sculpture, as well as his cupolone—St Peter’s famous dome.
Admire mosaic works, see a statue of St Peter, visit the tomb of Pope John Paul II and stare in wonder at Bernini’s baldacchino, the elaborate canopy alter that sits above St Peter’s tomb. Your tour ends inside the basilica, where you may continue exploring independently, if you wish.
Included in your visit you will receive Vox City Guide, an audio-experiences selfguided visit of the city of Rome with audio commentary and stories from local experts. The code to download your VCG will be delivered directly to the Basilica.

The Tour group was a no show! We paid for a taxi trip to the meeting location and were told that they were no longer doing this tour. We then had to pay for a taxi back to our hotel! Very unhappy!

Loved this tour. It gives an entirely different perspective of St Peter’s Cathedral. Loved being on the roof near the Saints statues

The Vatican was amazing. St. Peter’s Basilica is truly a marvel, GO EARLY! It gets absolutely mobbed! This tour was great, I am so upset I cannot remember my guides name because he was so good! Very kind and knowledgeable. My one thing is if you are going to the top of the dome that stair climb is BRUTAL. Do not do that if you have any heart condition.
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Good morning,
Thank you for your meaningful feedback.
We always advise against climbing the dome for those with heart conditions or who suffer from claustrophobia. We look forward to welcoming you again!

We found the starting point , no one to greet us or get any information, no coffee or pastry’s offered
We were finally shoved into a group of about 40
The guide ran off so quickly, we were down to about 30 people , when we checked into the Vatican security,
Next stop we made it to the top of the dome , very impressive and worth it , some took lift some walked up , lost a few more people lol , now down to 20 people, we ended the trip with 8 others
We found it very funny , but not suitable if you cant run , it was absolutely chaotic
No welcome/ no check in / no sign or welcome , just a few people standing outside a cafe , bonkers !!

Advertised free coffee and pastry but we had to pay for the pastry. My husband needed a scooter so we were told to wait by the exit. The tour guide never came back. Without our tour we were not permitted to enter the right entrance of the Vatican or see the Pieta. We saw members of the tour leaving so we gave up and left. What a waste of time and money.

Best recommendation is to take an early tour! We had a wonderful tour guide who met us at 7:45 am: NO crowds or large groups. Things were setting up for the day outside. Such an amazing up close and exceptional view and descriptions of the history. Dome Climb… elevator appreciated! We could not have done this without a tour. By the end of our tour, it was SO crowded, before 11;00 am!! Would never go in the afternoon when it is hot and crowded. Would recommend this tour highly and we enjoyed every minute. Still in great awe of the significance and exquisite workmanship of this historic and religious treasure.

We had the most amazing tour guide. He got us though the crowds as quickly as possible and knew what area to see in St Peter’s first to avoid the crowds. Would highly recommend this tour.

This was a very cool tour, but be prepared, there are 551 steps to climb to the top of the cupola!. Views were amazing! We then went thru the Basilica, where mass was being held, so we got not only amazing views of the church, but also experienced an Italian mass! Also, try to book this early in the day, as it's very tight and warm on the climb up!

The dome climb is quite a challenge. They offer an elevator ride for the first section but the second section is the worst part. Not to be undertaken lightly if you have any physical difficulties or are a bit claustrophobic - very steep, narrow, and awkward stairways. Otherwise a very rewarding tour.

Very informative tour! Vera did a great job answering questions, sharing the history, and adding random bits of trivia. The climb to the top of the dome is intense, and if you are doing it in the summer months it is very warm. Not for anyone that is claustrophobic.

Friendly, patient guide. Very helpful, patient with dumb questions. He guided us through security with expertise. The dome walk was an amazing experience; rigorous if you are not in good condition. I learned a lot about mosaics as the guide had an enthusiastic expertise and taught us well. Loved having a light breakfast to start the trip. Wish it offered a cappuccino instead of a juice box, bought it was ok as it was easy to buy a cappuccino separately.

This is one of about 5 must sees in Rome. The guide was local, well educated in history and had a patient pleasant demeanor. Due to conclave we didnt get in to Sistine Chapel but St Peter's is so spectacular it hardly mattered. Definitely see the catacombs while touring 5 stars for this experience

The tour was very well organized, easy to find the meeting point. It helped us a lot that we did not need to figure out ourselves which queue to stand in, to what our tickets are applicable, etc.
However, we found the information shared by the guide sometimes scarce, while a few items were repeated irrealistically lot. For example, I felt like there was not a lot shared about the history of the Vatican itself. I ended up googleing a lot after the tour to get a full picture. Also, having only two or three sentences about such a masterpiece as the Pietà seemed odd. On the other hand, it was at least 5x or 6x times mentioned that the Basilica includes mosaics and not paintings. It is indeed a super interesting fact, but it seemed very overrepresented in the whole tour.
I had the feeling we would have been better of with an audioguide.
Rebecca_T, May 2025
Our taxi driver dropped us off about 6 blocks from our meeting place. We were 35 minutes early but with having to find the place and not knowing the area, we were late. The next groups guides took us under their wing and brought us with them. Then they found our original group! We then went with Allessandra. She was a wonderful, knowledgeable guide. It was a great experience.

We were a bit disappointed. We knew that my mother would not be able to do the dome climb, so we were asked to wait in the Baslica. Unfortunately, after the dome climb our tour guide didn't come and get us and went down to the Papal Tombs without us. When we finally managed to hear them through the ear piece and find them we only got a short tour of the Basilica. It was very busy, so I understand it was hard for our tour guide, but he rushed through the Basilica and didn't wait for the group to catch up through the crowd. We thought we'd need this tour to get in, but I wish we would have just stood in line, gone in on our own and downloaded an audio tour.

Being Holy Week, I am so grateful we booked a tour to the Dome climb and St Peter's Basilica. Alessandra knew how to get us ahead of the long lines and kept us moving and receiving a lot of information ending with a stroll through the Holy doors. It was great!!

The tour started pourly as the guide told a group of us to wait for her in the coffee shop and she would get us in a few minutes. Then we saw her leaving through the window and we scambled to run to catch her --- and I mean at least 10 people so it wasn't our misunderstanding. She did not apologize. The Tour was scheduled for 745-945am but did not end until 11:15am. Normally I wouldn't complain about getting an extra 90 minutes but most people could not understand the Tour guide. Next, we take lots of tours around the world (including with Viator which we normally love) and we understand there are always accents so we must be patient, but we couldn't understand more than 20% of what the guide was saying.... most of it criticizing the guests for not keeping up. After 2 hours we kept going in and out of St. Peters many times stopping at what felt like every possible painting which was overkill as several people left the Tour. In addition, the guide was horrible.... she kept running ahead leaving the rest of the group and then verbally criticized the group many times for not keeping up until several passengers got in an argument with her. She kept saying the police wouldn't let her just stop.... first, no one saw any guards telling her to run/doge through the crowds... and it was not a issue of her not stopping, rather her darting ahead through the crowds like a mouse assuming 20+ people could do the same. Almost no one could keep up with her - young or old... and many people were upset. We've probably done 20 Viator trips and we like them --- that's why we keep doing them. But this was by far our worst experience ever. In short, we couldn't understand the guide, the Tour was 90 minutes longer than advertised and 90 minutes longer than the ticket said, and finally no one could keep up with her and instead of just slowing down, she citizen the guests. Definately not the experience we normally get from Viator. David

Do not miss climbing to the top of the dome, it is a must do! Signed up as this was the only way to get a slot to visit the dome. It is worth it even if you stop at the first level where the elevator ends for getting up close to the walls of the dome which are visible at quite a distance from below. Then don’t be deterred by people saying the staircase to the very top is too challenging. It was about a ten minute climb and there are windows throughout so it never felt claustrophobic. Once you get to the top, the view in all directions is spectacular. Unfortunately the guided tour of St Peter’s that followed the visit was not enjoyable as our guide was very irritable and kept squabbling with other people (tourists, workers) and there were many delays in walking through the church. Of course St Peter’s is a must see even for the non religious for the art alone and more so for the sense of history and meaning.

Too little time at the top of the cupola.
Not a harmonic and angaging story telling by the guide. A bit disappointing though we undersyit it is not an easy job with this amount of people and she did her very best.

The dome was majestic and all the intricate details of the mosaic paintings. Our guide was amazing. Very thorough, knowledgeable and flexible!
Susan_B, Oct 2024
I participated as a solo traveler and could not have enjoyed seeing the basilica more. The tour length was just enough to move through the security and entry cues, ascend the Dome and hear about and see inside St Peter’s. I appreciate how our guide kept things lively while we waited in cue! She was a native Roman and very passionate and knowledgeable about St. Peter’s and the Vatican. The Dome climb was one-way up and a different passageway down, so once you’ve begun, you’re committed. The view of Rome and the Vatican is immeasurable, so just keep going! At the tour’s end, we were welcomed to walk around the cathedral’s interior. I recommend a tour reservation time as early in the day as possible (mine was 7:45am). Touring St. Peter’s and the Dome consumed my half a day (say, 7:30-11 or 11:30) which was perfection.

At 70 years old. On our bucket list was see Rome from the top of St. Peter’s dome.
Thanks to the elevator half way up we managed the rest of the steps all the up to the dome and looked down at St Peter’s square.. Thank you for making this possible..

This tour guide was well-informed and spoke excellent English. She was asked several questions by our group and was able to answer everything. We really enjoyed this tour.
