Itinerary

After pickup by private minivan from your Rome hotel, your day trip starts with the drive out of the city to Italy’s Campania region. During the journey, catch a glimpse of the Benedictine monastery the Abbey of Montecassino.

When you arrive in Pompeii, pay your own entrance fee before heading inside to explore the archaeological ruins that make up this UNESCO World Heritage Site and provide fascinating insight into what life was like here during the Imperial age. Explore independently or with an on-site guide.

Located at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius, ancient Pompeii was a Roman city that met a tragic end when it was covered in volcanic ash during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. Today, the well-preserved ruins of lanes, homes, and public structures depict daily life in the city, where residents once bustled around now-empty sites like the limestone Forum, thermal baths, and piazza. See the remains of the Teatro Grande, a theater that once held 5,000 people, and check out the Lupanar, a brothel decorated with frescoes.

When your time at Pompeii ends, return to your minivan for the private drive back to Rome, stopping on the way for a meal (own expense). Your day trip then finishes with hotel drop-off.

Worth it!

Our driver Fabio was great and very punctual! The agency also arranged a private tour in Pompeii which was also wonderful. We were able to see and learn things we wouldn’t have. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to visit Pompeii hassle free.

Fantastic way to get to Pompeii

J_C, May 2024
I have been to Pompeii before by train and by tour bus and I did not enjoy either means of transport. I decided to schedule a private tour through Viator and it was the absolute best. Our driver- Ricardo was perfect! He picked us up outside our VRBO door and dropped us right at the entry gate. He told us to take as long as we wanted to explore Pompeii and then again picked us up at the gate. Coming home to Rome he took us to a wonderful 6th century cathedral Santa Sabina. Absolutely the best!

Awesome tour!

Our driver Riccardo was fabulous. He was engaging, informative, and really took good care of us along the drive making sure that we had everything we needed and were comfortable. And he pointed out interesting things along the way. Our tour guide Barbara was awesome too! She really gave a fantastic overview of Pompeii in such a way that we left feeling that we had a real sense of the big picture of the life and history of Pompeii. Thank you to both Ricardo and Barbara. We didn't ever feel rushed and we were back in Rome in time to enjoy the late afternoon.

Private trip to Pompeii - MARVELOUS!

Eugene_M, Aug 2022
Our driver Alex was wonderful! He drove us from Rome to Pompeii in a very roomy Mercedes van and provided a wealth of knowledge as we drove. The ruins were fascinating - well worth the trip. On the ride back, Alex took us to a family-owned Pizza shop in Napoli ( see the photo) that had the best pizza! The entire trip was marvelous - something we will all cherish.

Good experience

Driver was not very engaging. When he talked only the front heard him. On the other hand our tour at Pompei guide Santiago was the best I’ve had in a long time.

Pompeii day trip private tour

Noelene_B, Sep 2019
Didn't actually realise when booking that this was a private tour so we were really fortunate to have picked such an amazing tour. Our guide Barbara was incredible with her explanation, knowledge and respect for the site. Max drove us and was friendly and drove well. Would recommend this tour!!

Driver: Excellent Customer Service!

CRAIG_L, Sep 2019
The driver Alessandro was excellent. He provided us with an overview of the places driving to Pompei. ×hen we arrived, he told us where to meet him. The tour was not good. There were people approaching you to be an English Tour and said they would get your ticket but would not tell you until you get out of the line it would also cost an additional 20 Euros each to pay them. Very unprofessional.

Excellent day trip to Pompeii

Todd_G, Jul 2019
We had an excellent day trip to Pompeii! As a party of 8 (2 families of 4) we got picked up at 7:30 in the morning from our apartment by our driver Matteo who drove us for the 2 hour drive in a comfortable air conditioned van. Throughout the drive Matteo gave us tidbits about Rome, the countryside, Naples, and Pompeii. He provided water and the opportunity to stop for breakfast or coffee if we wanted to. Once we got to Pompeii, Matteo turned us over to our tour guide who gave us a personal tour of the ruins for over 2 hours. Beforing going on the tour Matteo did ask us our preference for lunch for after the tour and once we were done he had set up a lunch reservation which was much appreciated. Once we finished lunch we did some shopping around the ruins and then headed back to our apartment in Rome. Matteo was extremely friendly and courteous throughout the trip and made the drive back and forth enjoyable. The tour was fantastic and the private driver made it worthwhile. I would highly recommend this tour!

Private Van Trip Round Trip Rome to Pompeii

KATHIE_K, Mar 2019
I booked two vans for a day trip from Rome to Pompeii for my family of 10 people. It was the best decision I could have made. The drivers were fantastic and provided commentary along the way. Our lead driver even contacted the guide that had been booked and changed the meeting place to accommodate my use of a walker, then showed us where to have lunch. I highly recommend this company. We had an excellent experience.

It was a great trip to Pompeii. We truly enjoyed our visit outside of the City of Rome to get a chance to see some of the countryside. Thanks to Giorgio for getting us there and back to our hotel safely.

Our driver David was a lovely person. He had to drive through some heavy rain but kept us amused along the way. On arrival in Pompeii Barbara was there to meet us and gave us a wonderful informative tour of the site. The place David suggested for lunch was excellent, the food and staff were so good. Great day all round.

There were 8 of us and we were driven in a spacious and clean MPV. Davide was our driver and gave us good insights of the surrounding areas on the way there and back. The local guide at Pompeii was knowledgeable and the tour was very interesting.

The pick up, driver excellent. the staff at entrance to Pompeii hopeless, gave us no info. We followed the blue trail, very interesting but ended up at the ma in office, saw a film presentation good. Saw that there was available an audio service which we were not informed about. Also no info brochure in English, I went and double checked with entrance office, they justsaid they had no English brochures.... Asked driver to take us down to the waterfront, said yes but it didn't happen. Guide at Pompeii 150 Euro for about one hour. We said No as his English not too good so hard to understand. M.B

MARILENE_P, Sep 2017
We took this tour on our last day in Rome and I have to say it was the cherry on top of our whole week in Italy. Davide was incredibly nice , courteous and professional he arrived on time actually earlier than the call time but he never rushed us. I highly recommend getting a guide at Pompeii, losing your way at the site is highly possible but with a guide that wouldnt be a problem at all. Santiago our guide shared with us a lot of information and more. We enjoyed every minute of the tour and it was all worth it. Lunch just outside the site was great

It was nice having a private tour that way you could modify the day. I would highly recommend choosing the tour guide option to see Pompeii. We didn't and regretted it. Yes we got the audio guide but in hindsight I think having a tour guide would of been better. Our driver was extremely nice and professional. We were running a little late from seeing Pompeii and he was very accommodating. We ate lunch ch at the restaurant right outside the entrance which was very good. If you are anchored in Rome it can be a long day, somhaving the private driver saved time.

Daniel E, Jul 2017
Our driver was excellent and provided a great introduction to Rome as we made our way out of the city. He was informative and a very good driver which by comparison to some other drivers is Rome is a high compliment. He delivered us at the entrance of the facility to meet with our tour guide, who was a trained archeologist. It was a particularly hot day and the tour guide was conscientious of keeping us in the shade as much as possible. She share great information about Pompeii and really helped to develop a picture of the life of it's citizens before the tragic event. We appreciated our driver's attentiveness so much we invited him to join us for lunch. All in all it was a great trip and we seem to have top of the line driver and private tour guide.

Wen Qian C, Jun 2017
We had a really wonderful driver taking us to Pompeii. Gave us a bottle of quality olive oil and took us to a wonderful pastry shop to grab a bite. Sadly, things went downhill from there as we really struggled to understand what our Pompeii guide is saying. She spoke very broken Italian-English.

We just returned from a week in Rome...

Gina N, Mar 2017
We just returned from a week in Rome with our children 6, 9, 11 where we scheduled this tour for the midpoint of our trip. A professional driver, Daniele, picked us up promptly outside our apartment as promised. Honestly, this gentleman was just as knowledgeable about Rome as our tour guide was about Pompeii. He was so friendly, engaging, and continuously spouting off interesting facts that the 2.5 hour ride to Pompeii was pleasurably relaxing. Also, his driving was fantastic! In Rome, the driving is absolute controlled chaos, I wouldn't get behind a wheel if you paid me. And after the return trip to the airport using a different service where I was literally crying from fear and I am far from hysterical, I travel quite a bit by myself for work and pleasure so it takes a lot to get me worked up, the contrast between that trip and the Viator car service made the latter heavenly in retrospect! At Pompeii, Daniele dropped us off with our local tour guide we elected this option. This turned out to be a great choice because it allows you to skip the line and also not worry about where you are I could definitely see us getting lost there by ourselves, and the tour only covered a few blocks of the overall city, watch the kids, and learn about and observe the site. Also, if you have little ones along and are concerned about the body casts upsetting them, there were only a few casts that we saw and this area can be easily skipped - there are plenty of other things to focus on. Advice to future travelers: bring a backpack with water, snacks, hat/sunscreen/umbrella, and coins the bathrooms outside the site did charge for admittance. Also, this place is assuredly not stroller-friendly! After the tour, Daniele picked us back up for our return trip. He had a menu for a local restaurant if we wanted to stop there, but we elected to head back although we later decided to stop along the way for another restroom break and a snack, at which point we could have also bought sandwiches if we desired. We were back at our apartment by 4-ish, so all told the outing lasted roughly 8 hours. In short, I would wholeheartedly recommend this tour. Yes, there are cheaper options. You could travel to Pompeii by train, but then you have to get to Termini in Rome, change trains in Naples, then get from the Pompeii dropoff point to the site's actual entrance. Once there you could i pay for admission individually but you'll have to wait in line with tours you can skip the line and then you may be more focused on wrangling your family members and navigating thus meaning you won't be able to relax, or ii you could split the difference and join a larger tour of 25 or so but Pompeii can be loud and crowded and if you aren't up close you may not be able to hear or ask your own questions or go at your own pace e.g., bathroom breaks. However, private tours were our splurge for the trip and we all agree that they were well worth the price!!!

Jeff D, Oct 2016
We had heard on reviews about wonderful informative drivers. Ours was pleasant enough, but he did not give any information on the way or at least not to the group. The tour guide at Pompeii was reasonably informative, but she was inflexible. She gave us her standard tour refusing to deviate to show us the laundry we really wanted to see. She stuck to a two hour program of a standard unremarkable tour. The driver did take us on a side trip we requested to a famous WWII battlefield which we thoroughly appreciated.

We took the private tour and paid a surplus to have a guided tour. It was amazing! Our driver was fabulous. Taught us things along the way, he was pleasant and insightful by answering any questions we had. As for our tour guide, she was so good too. She knew so much and if we didn't understand, she was more tha willing to explain with patience. We highly recommend this tour!!

Traveling with teenagers. We had a small amount of time in Italy. This was worth it for the ease of the pickup and drop off. Our driver was very accommodating, even taking us to the pharmacy to get antihistamine medicine for my son. We got to see the new sites that have only recently been opened up at Pompeii this year, which was extremely cool. I'm not sure if there is enough time to visit other cities like the tour description mentions, unless you plan to only take an hour in Pompeii. We didn't because there was so much to see!

Nigel S, Nov 2015
A bit of a long journey to get there form Rome, but the driver Claudio was good. Our guide Santiago for the visit was so knowledgeable and able to get across a feeling as if we were there. A fascinating 3 hours touring the town. Well worth the money

We had a fabulous time! We booked the private tour because we wanted to be able to go at our own pace and spend time truly seeing Pompeii. This tour was worth every penny. Our driver, Massimo, was fantastic! Our guide at Pompeii was very knowledgeable and personable, and tailored the tour to what we wanted to see. I highly recommend this tour.
