- The tour operator is not responsible for last minute, unpredictable closures, strikes or union meetings of St Peter's Basilica. Nevertheless, the tour operator will be happy to offer customers an extended tour for the remaining time.
- For the 3hours, 4hours and 5hours option: If the Basilica reaches full capacity, access will unfortunately not be allowed, and this will be beyond our control. In such a case, more time will be spent inside the museums.
- Hotel drop off at the end of the tour is not included but it can be added for an extra cost. Please message us to add drop off at the end of the tour

Very unfortunate experience and by far the worst experience I have had on a Viator private tour. Despite being in continuous communication with the tour to tell them this was a very special occasion, we were informed only upon arrival that Saint Peter’s Basilica was closed and we wouldn’t be able to see it and that this is well known by locals that the Basilica is closed the Saturday before Easter. This is a significant breach of contract by Viator who could have helped us to reschedule when the Basilica was open. Viator needs to take accountability for this misrepresentation and lack of care. This will be my dad’s last chance to se the Basilica due to age. It was his birthday wish that he would get to see the Basilica and we flew thousands of miles to make that happen. Viator let us down and was negligent in transparently communicating within a window where their was opportunity to correct this.

We completely understand the emotional value behind this moment, and we genuinely regret that the closure of St. Peter’s Basilica impacted your experience in this way.
Unfortunately, the Basilica’s opening is strictly managed by the Vatican and can be subject to sudden changes, particularly during Easter week, when religious celebrations may lead to unexpected closures. These decisions are communicated very last minute and are outside the control of any tour operator.
When your tour was arranged, we specifically extended it to 4 hours to ensure a more comfortable and complete experience, also taking into consideration your father’s mobility. At that time, there was no indication that the Basilica would not be accessible. Likewise, when we contacted you again on March 22 regarding wheelchair arrangements, no closure had been announced yet.
As outlined on Viator at the time of booking, access to St. Peter’s Basilica is not guaranteed and may be restricted without prior notice. In these situations, our guides adapt the experience accordingly, providing detailed explanations from St. Peter’s Square to ensure guests still gain meaningful insight into the site.
While we are not in a position to offer a refund due to the nature of these circumstances, please be assured that every effort was made to provide the best possible experience on the day.

Absolutely incredible private tour of the Vatican and Sistine Chapel. It was seamless and perfectly curated experience. Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable, bringing the history and art to life in a way that felt personal and unforgettable. The Sistine Chapel was truly breathtaking. The guide was excellent, however we were not notified ahead of time that the Basilica was closed.
Seeing the Basilica was 1/3 of the tour.
Additionally, Viator had posted that the “End point” was the same as the “Meeting point”. We were picked up at the hotel, that was the “Meeting point”, but there was no transportation arranged to return us to the hotel.
So I paid more than $850 for only part of the advertised tour and had to cover additional costs and deal with several Uber cancellations, trying to get back to the hotel.
I reached out to the tour company twice prior to arriving in Rome. The purpose was to discuss the transportation. The tour company never responded and they blamed Viator.
Super disappointing. Lack of communication with the tour company and each time I called Viator, staff just listened to the issue for a couple minutes, then hung up.
In my view, Viator does not support the customer as they should.

Regarding transportation, the service you booked clearly states “hotel pickup included” under the inclusions, while “hotel drop-off” is listed among the exclusions, with the option to add it at an additional cost. The pickup is provided as a convenience to comfortably reach the meeting point, which is where the tour officially begins. As specified, the tour ends at the Vatican, where you meet your guide.
Concerning the Basilica, we fully understand how disappointing it can be to find it closed. However, as indicated in the notes and disclaimers available prior to booking, access to St. Peter’s Basilica is subject to closures beyond our control. In such cases, the tour is adjusted by spending additional time inside the Vatican Museums. Additionally, our guide offered to assist by providing information on how to access the Basilica later in the day once it reopened.
We always strive to be as transparent as possible and ensure that all relevant details are clearly communicated in advance so that guests can make informed decisions when booking.
We regret that some aspects of your experience did not meet your expectations, but we hope this clarification helps provide a more complete understanding of the service delivered.

It was an interesting tour, the tour guide was the best you can imagine, with a lot of knowledge, but the crowd of people was overwhelming, terrible and unbeatable. I would never take surgery again. The second issue is the return to the hotel was apparently not included and I realized that later on looking on the backside of the paper I had. This is not a private tour that is enjoyable because I had to hire a private driver to get back to our hotel. Nothing wrong with a guide but the whole tour was not enjoyable.

Easy pick up in a van from our airbnb for our party of 6 including 2 grandparents. Great tour and guide and especially grateful for how helpful and attentive she was when 1 of our party had a slight medical emergency. She was also instrumental in helping us use closed private staircases etc. Note the description of the tour does say moderate physical activity which is true and from what we could tell the Vatican Museums are not really set up for wheelchairs or walkers. That said our elderly parents were able to do it and enjoy it thanks to our amazing guide allowing some stops. If you are an elder or with elders THIS IS WORTH IT TO HAVE THIS PRIVATE TOUR not only for all the amazing and extensive information but also for the care and attention. Highly recommend.

What a spectacular day! We were picked up at our hotel in a beautiful Mercedes van and whisked through the streets of Rome to the Vatican where we met our incredible guide. She made our Vatican visit so smooth. She was knowledgeable, smart, and knew how to navigate every nook and cranny. I honestly don’t know how we would’ve done today without her. You only see the outside of the museum and the relics, maps, tapestries. We did make a short stop inside the Sistine Chapel where there is no speaking and St. Peters where it is too busy to hear anything. We should have played out our expectations of viewing the Raphael Rooms and the rest of the museum instead of the tutorial outside. We needed to better explain and make clear our our expectations of the tour.

We would like to clarify that speaking inside the Sistine Chapel is strictly forbidden by Vatican Museums regulations and does not depend on us or on the guide. Likewise, the high number of visitors during the festive period results in very crowded conditions, especially inside St. Peter’s Basilica.
Please also note that during this time of year there are additional restrictions inside the Basilica, including limitations on explanations given inside, which are imposed by the authorities and are beyond our control.
In light of the above, the aspects mentioned in your review do not depend on the service provided by us, but are outside of our control and beyond our will.

Driver/pick up from hotel was very accomodating with mobility needs of guest. Very nice vehicle. Private tour guide Louisa was excellent. Unfortunately we only completed the museums part of the tour+coffee before 1 member of our 3 was injured and needed to be taken to hospital by ambulance. Louisa stayed with us until ambulance left and she set us up with a taxi and gave instructions to the driver.
We are disappointed to miss seeing Sistene Chapel and Basilica and having Louisa's excellent commentary

The driver and tour guide were excellent. Paulo the driver was prompt and personable. Fabia was our tour guide. She was very personable and knowledgeable. Having the personal driver and tour guide made the tour more personal and enjoyable. Five stars does not seem enough for either Paulo or Fabia. You would be fortunate to have Paulo and Fabia personalize your tour experience. Both Paulo and Fabia were attentive and cared for our safety and pleasure.
