Itinerary

After pickup at your Rome hotel by your professional driver, hop into your private minivan to start your day trip, which takes you south of the city into the region of Campania. During the drive to your first stop, catch a glimpse of the Abbey of Montecassino, a hilltop monastery.

When you arrive in Pompeii, pay your own entrance fee before heading inside, where you have ample time to take in the archaeological ruins of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learn about the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79 that covered the ancient Roman city in ash and molten pumice, freezing the village in time. Depending on the option selected when booking, either explore the well-preserved streets on your own or take a tour with a knowledgeable guide who tells you about the Forum, thermal baths and other village features that were part of daily life for Pompeii residents.

Then continue your day trip along the winding Amalfi Coast to your final stop, Positano. Here, you have more free time to admire the pastel-colored houses that perch on the cliffs, shop in high-end boutiques, enjoy a drink or meal at a local eatery or take a walk on the beach. When your time is up, hop back in your minivan for the return drive to Rome for hotel drop-off.

Matt did a great job navigating and giving us suggestions re where to stop as we had some time on the way to our destination. He was flexible in letting us change from Pompeii to Herculaneum which we really enjoyed and Matt, having never having been there researched it and dropped us off at the front. He was friendly and knowledgeable and then suggested stopping at the limoncello factory in Sorrento when he heard us talking about it. Overall had a great experience!

Marco picked us up at our hotel on-time (actually early!) and we were off to enjoy a one-day tour of the Amalfie Coast and then Pompeii. He was professional, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable about history, art, architecture and even food. What a wonderful experience. At Pompeii, his colleague Santiago provided a fascinating tour of the ruins, providing a narrative that truly told the story of the place.

Amazing day visiting 2 places we really wanted to see in Italy, but didn’t have a ton of time to spare. Our driver, Marco was fantastic! We couldn’t have had a better experience. He picked up our family of 7 outside our apartment in Rome at 7:30 am and drove us to Pompeii. All along the way he shared historical and cultural information about what we were seeing. He took us to the entrance gate of Pompeii and we had a few hours to walk around and explore. So incredible! Next we hopped back in the van and made the drive to Positano. Marco stopped for a few scenic views and near a juice stand with an incredible view. We enjoyed the freshly squeezed juice and bought some lovely oranges for the ride. Got some amazing photos as well. We traveled during the slow season, but Marco drove us into Positano. We were able to get some lunch overlooking the sea and even walk along the beach with our feet in the water. We bought a few souvenirs and met Marco back at the van for our ride back to Rome. Our family loved every minute of this adventure. Marco was very professional, but also warm and charming. He was incredibly accommodating to our requests and made the trip comfortable and fun. We looked into making the trip on our own with public transit or renting a car, but it wasn’t worth the time and cost. This excursion was very affordable and took out all of the worries of missing trains and busses. If we had driven the winding roads ourselves we wouldn’t have been able to enjoy the views along the way (at least for the driver). Marco spoke excellent English but with a beautiful Italian accent. The van was spotless inside and out and very comfortable. The company, Driver in Rome, had excellent communication contacting us a few days before our trip to be sure we had all the details. We wouldn’t change a thing, except maybe staying a week on the Amalfi Coast to soak in a little more sun and culture. Loved it!!

We had so much fun on this trip down to Sorrento and Pompeii! The village of Sorrento was decorated for Christmas and I could of stayed all day! Pompeii was cool but we all wished we would of hired a guide for that...Our fault

We enjoyed our day, but were very disappointed with the arrogance of our private driver, who refused to take us to Positano as we booked. He rushed our day for no reason as Pompeii is very close to the coast. We managed to demand changes as per our original itinerary, but for the money and promise of a whole day together the driver just wanted to get us back to Rome as quickly as possible - do this private trip but through a different driving company

Off-season travel to Italy

Three of us booked private transportation and a private tour guide to visit Pompeii and see the coast south of Naples in one enjoyable day excursion from Rome. The driver, Davide, was prompt and professional. Our tour guide in Pompeii, Santiago, was equally professional, extremely knowledgeable and allowed us to set the pace to tour Pompeii. Since we opted to spend more time exploring the excavations of Pompeii, our driver discussed our options for touring Positano. We decided, with his input, to pass on Positano, and visit Sorrento. The old town pedestrian area was touristy, but Davide provided us with tips where to eat, and advised we walk down to the beach. I'm glad we walked to the beach to soak in some sun. I can't imagine touring Pompeii and the Naples-Amalfi coast during peak summer tourist season. Going off-season on a sunny day was a perfect day trip from Rome.

Highly recommend this tour. Our guide and driver Matteo was excellent. He promptly picked us up from our hotel in a very comfortable air conditioned van. He was very accommodating to our comfort and needs and gave us great information about places we visited. Pompeii is amazing and like looking at history frozen in time. Positano is just beautiful. We had a delicious lunch at a restaurant Matteo recommended with incredible views. We had a great time and would recommend this tour to anyone without hesitation.

Although not cheap, we felt the private tour was worth it. Our ride met us at our hotel in Rome right on time, and was friendly and informative on our ride to Positano. He provided helpful advice and recommendations, then left us to wander about the charming and breathtaking village for a couple of hours, visiting shops, having lunch, hanging out on the beach for a while. waded a little, but the water was too chilly to swim-March--but still a good time to go, as apparently traffic in the summer can be horrendous Then went to Pompeii, where our private tour guide was waiting, and we were able to skip the line. Pompeii was spectacular, and again the private guide is worth it--I am sure it allowed us to see much more in the allotted time the site is HUGE, and have a much better understanding of what we saw

The day tour to Pompeii and Positano was fantastic. Choosing the option of a private mini van we had a group of eight people was an excellent idea and it made our day so flexible. Our driver, Marco, was knowledgeable and very friendly. He made sure we were always comfortable and never once did he rush us through the day. I would repeat this tour again without hesitation.

Our tour guide was super friendly, professional and super informative. His van was clean and comfy which made us feel at home. However, beware of this excursion as you spend more time in the car than you do exploring. We made 2 small pit spots to enjoy the view and take some photos but this is not a tour where you can walk around and take your time. I wish I would have known this before booking as I would have liked to take a dip at the beach or walk around the shops.

This is beautiful, but a 3.5 hour drive each way takes up several hours out of the 11 hours for the tour. We were dropped off about a twenty minute walk from the main shopping and beach. Basically, by the time you get dinner, your time is up. We elected to bypass Pompei because of limited time. I would recommend a overnight stay. We loved this tour! Gianni picked us up at our hotel bright and early for the 2 ride to Sorrento instead of Positano. He was full of information and enthusiasm for Italy which made the ride a breeze. He was a joy! We walked the beautiful city of Sorrento and chose a sidewalk restaurant for lunch and to people watch. We then made the short trip to Pompeii and were met by our tour guide Barbara. Let me tell you, we all loved her! She was so informative, knowledgable and passionate. Our teenage boys commented on her sense of pride and professionalism in what she does. After 30 years of guiding visitors she is incredibly enthusiastic! We would definitely recommend this tour!
