Tour guides were fun. Views were amazing. Ride was a thrill. The snacks they mentioned were just a small water bottle and granola bar. The restroom at the top of the ride consists of bushes. The stop in Makawao could have been a little longer.

Unique experience on Maui

Karen_S, Feb 2026
Fun, one of a kind experience. Definitely focused on the bike ride vs. history of volcano etc. be prepared to ride 20-30 mph down a nicely paved road. (That caught me a bit off guard). But I did it twice without pressure to be the fastest. Weather was bad so we didn’t get to see what I imagine from other pictures would be beautiful scenery. 40 minutes spent in small town was fun to poke in and out of shops. Rained so hard we ended up not riding the road back to the start, even though they gave us the option.

Fun ride

Mahalo for your comments. We do offer unlimited small water bottles... We use small water bottles to limit waste. Most of the time guests do not drink even half of a full 16 oz. bottles. We do have restrooms at our office at checkin and again in Makawao. Makawao is an amazing Paniolo town that we definitely recommend visiting.

One of the best adventures you can do on Maui!

TRUDY_P, Oct 2024
This was the first time doing this adventure. It came highly recommended and I agree. Rory was our tour guide and driver. Check in was very easy. Rory is a wealth of information and just a really fun guy, as well as a safe driver. It was so much fun doing the switch backs down the mountain. We got to do to go back up after the first ride and we definitely wanted to go again. I believe this is the only company that does this. The second time down is much faster and fun as you aren't as worried as you were the first time. We then stopped in Makawao for a food & shopping break. Afterwards, we rode down to the base shop. This was so much fun and highly recommend doing it. Can't wait to go back & do it again

We appreciate you taking the time to leave such a kind review. Rory is a great tour guide and loves his job. Mahalo

Biking in a cloud!

KATHY_K, Sep 2024
Did you ever bike when the clouds were below you? Did you ever bike through a cloud? Did you ever bike where the scenery throughout the ride was spectacular? If you cant say yes to each of these questions, then you should do this activity. It's all down hill and all you have to worry about is letting yourself go too fast. Staff was great and very safety conscious. No complaints.

Response from Host, Oct 2024

Yes sometimes there are clouds and it is fun. Mahalo for sharing your ride through the clouds.

Bike a volcano...but really just part of it

Julie_D, Jan 2024
If you imagine biking from the volcano top down to Paia, none of the tour groups are allowed to go through the neighborhoods separating the two anymore. You bike the top 6-8 miles twice and then are taken down to Makawao to do the final 5 miles. Our tour guide was very nice, informative and helpful. It was well organized and beautiful. I don't feel the websites are very upfront about this fact though.

Response from Host, Jan 2024

Aloha, We have been doing bike tours down Haleakala for over 30 years. Unfortunately we have to abide by the heavy regulations and restrictions from the federal and county governments that have been imposed on us. We still provide a great experience from the Sunrise on the top of Haleakala to the self-guided tours outside the park. Our website is clear and it is sad that even though this reviewer says that we did a good job she gives us three stars. We all have been hit extremely hard from the Maui fires and the island as a whole is suffering. A lot of businesses of all kinds are going out of business every day. Our crew have been doing their jobs for over 30 years as well and give it their all to provide the safest, most informative and exhilarating tours, The reviewer mentions "websites" we only have one and the tour she booked never started form the top of the mountain and definitely ended in Paia. Bike riding in Haleakala National Park ended in 2007. We don't believe this is a fair rating. Please see other 5 star reviews. Mahalo Mountain Riders

Great time with beautiful weather and the views were unforgettable.

Paul_S, Oct 2023
Spectacular views thrilling ride, fun and interesting guide. My sister and I made the ride together.

Do it.

Jason_B, Sep 2023
The service, the history and local color provided by Joe, the quality of the equipment... honestly it was so much more than I expected and I can't recommend it enough.

Woo Hoo!

John_C, May 2023
Feeling of freedom, clean air, beauty all around. Guide was great - funny, informative, engaged with riders. Incredible views, flowers, beauty all around. Driver also showed a lot of safety and concerns for participants and friendly to all!

Incredible Experience

Justin_L, Apr 2023
Manny was fantastic! What an incredible tour. They allowed us to go down the main part twice, with all of the switchbacks - which was an unexpected surprise. I wish we could have biked the entire way down, but understand with the restrictions on Maui. Such an incredible, and safe, experience. We will definitely be doing this again! Thank you again!

Response from Host, Apr 2023

We were fortunate to have great weather and good visibility. Our driver provided great information about the trip details and island history with a wonderful sense of humor.

Great time for all!

Manny and Shane were amazing tour guides and made the trip even more memorable!! The stop in the town was an added bonus. Loved it!

Response from Host, Jun 2022

Manny and Shane are amazing !!! Thank you for sharing about your experience with us. Makawao town is a very special cowboy town with a lot of Maui history.

Awesome ride down the Haleakala

It was a blast! We stayed with the group and we're glad that we did. Bobby and Nonnie took good care of us and made it even more fun! We were zippin' down the mountain on comfortable bikes, enjoying beautiful scenery the whole way.

Mountain Riders is such a great outfit for downhill bike tours! We came for our honeymoon and everyone was very warm & welcoming. Our operator was extremely safe & even stopped a few times on our trek downhill to take pictures of us on the mountainside! I ended up forgetting one of my favorite sweatshirts in the van and one of the owners gave it to a colleague so I could pick it up the next day. Would recommend 10/10. THANK YOU!

Joe was amazing, the course was fast & beautiful. Be careful because it is very easy to get lost but Joe is right there to pick you up!! We got lost & before we could call him, he was already there!! So we never made it back on our town but we had an exhilarating, super fun time getting lost!!

The Ride was a blast and Rob is Da Bomb!

Rheanna_F, Sep 2021
Rob was a great guide! He told us great stories about Maui on the way up. At the top he made us feel safe with his safety brief and bike tests. We loved being able to go at our own pace on the way down!

Self-Guided Tour Not Recommended

KaitlynCarlson, Aug 2021
Highly do not recommend the self-guided tour. You’ll have a better experience both emotionally and financially if you just rent your own bike locally. The bikes themselves are mediocre single-gear that lack upkeep. The guide assigned to my tour left me sitting at a bus stop for 45 minutes after requesting a ride. He initially stated it was a short ride back and I could make it on my own. If you don't want to risk severe dehydration, pick another tour.

Response from Host, Aug 2021

We are sorry Kaitlyn Carlson is dissatisfied with her ride. For staters this tour is an economically affordable tour which costs less than a bike rental on Maui and includes the shuttle to the starting point on Haleakala. Secondly, we provide water to ALL of our customers throughout the tours. Hydration is very important. Thirdly, bikes are maintained daily, we employ a full time bicycle mechanic and the bikes are designed for the downhill ride. Kaitlyn Carlson was NOT left at a bus stop for 45 minutes, again the tour is Self Guided which means it is at your own pace. Directions were given to all the riders, including her three brothers in her party, who did not have any problems with directions and finished the ride on their own. Kaitlyn Carlson chose to stop at a point along the route, which was close to the ending point. The driver informed her of the option to finish the ride if she wanted to it was a short distance from where she was to the end. She chose to stop where she did. In turn the driver picked her up as soon as she requested, it was a short 10 minute wait. She chose to stop where she did. Perhaps she should have either gone on a shorter ride or a guided tour. We wish Kaitlyn Carlson the best.

Ride like the wind

David_H, Jul 2021
Great ride! Get the poke bowl @general store in Makawao! Guys knew their stuff w good emphasis on safety! Sturdy bikes. Self-paced option provided freedom.

A little short

Christopher_C, Jul 2021
All in all a 3.6-3.8; first off the bikes were very safe and built specifically for downhill. The company was well coordinated and ready to help. If memory serves they were a cheaper option than some others and that raises my rating to 4+ but that said why I didn’t 5-it… we didn’t go up anywhere near as high as possible. Mark (our driver) talked about not mingling bike confusion routes etc. but that seemed a cop-out — had driven to the peak the day before so was familiar. Was not 26 miles from where we started. He was very thorough about landmark notes and such as well as native insights and info. Worth the $? I would suggest finding the sunrise tour version.

Family fun

Thomas_S, Jun 2021
Good family experience for my 18yo, 14yo, and 11yo children. Easy ride down without any real steep sections. Only things my youngest complained about were the occasional cars passing and her hands getting sore from gripping the brakes the whole way down. Friendly staff regailed us with stories about what Maui was like when they were children. Glad we did it.

Response from Host, Jun 2021

Glad the kids had fun sometimes they would like to go a little quicker but we definitely prefer to concentrate on the safe side of things. so happy you enjoyed your Maui vacation.

Fun bike ride!

Sona_P, Mar 2021
Beautiful, easy bike ride down the crater! Wish we had gone up a little higher to see the crater but overall had a great time. Staff was helpful and friendly too.

Response from Host, Mar 2021

Thank you so much for the positive review really appreciate it

Panorama

Ian_L, Feb 2021
Our trip was on an almost perfect day. Dress warmly for the top. I Bobby kept us safe and on track as there are only three turns and peddling is next to minimum. The views are spectacular. I must do for almost any age group.

Response from Host, Mar 2021

I am glad you really enjoy the views that's been my favourite part of the Toure and dealing with the customer since day one look for to seeing you again

You won’t regret it, exciting, thrilling, breathtaking.

Evan_A, Jan 2021
My girlfriend and I had an absolute blast doing this. It’s a pretty thrilling ride down Haleakala, 27 Miles, 7,000 feet elevation change. And to top it off the best Tour company to do it with. They were so warm and welcoming when we arrived. Our tour operator KAULANA, a local Hawaiian himself, was super knowledgeable and shared so many great tidbits about the island, the history and the ecological diversity about everything we passed on the way up. He took the time to make sure we felt comfortable, made sure we were having the time of our lives and was honestly just a super awesome human being that was so down to earth and so nice to get to know. I highly highly recommend this ride. Even preferred it over the sunrise summit ride cuz it was so less crowded and gave my girlfriend more comfort not having to ride next to hundreds of riders and cars zooming past. The views on this ride are unmatchable and the memory you’ll have from doing it will last a lifetime 🤙🏼 Mahalo KAULANA! ~Evan & Sophia San Francisco, CA
