Loved it

The Domas is a unique tour with great information and an interesting historical perspective. So amazing to see an palace that is over 2000 years old

Nice small group tour. Got to see all of the site. Nicely only a short distance from the coliseum crowds

Response from Host, Dec 2025

Thank you for your comment. We are glad you enjoyed our small group tour!

Overpriced and hard to understand

Rose_B, Nov 2025
I have taken professionally guided tours of the colosseum and Vatican Museums in the recent past. The guide was Italian, fluent in English, was a scholar in history and made the tour very interesting. For this tour, the guide was very nice but struggled with English more than I expected. It was hard to follow. For the price, it should have been a more fluid and educational experience in my opinion.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

We’re very sorry to hear that your experience didn’t fully meet your expectations. Unfortunately, on the day of your tour, we had to replace the original guide at the last minute due to a sudden flu. We completely understand how important clear and engaging communication is, and we assure you that our usual guides are fluent in English and highly experienced in delivering educational and enjoyable tours. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again for a perfect experience next time.

Domus Aureus

Thomas_M, Oct 2025
Stunning tour. Wonderful place with an expert guide. The VR part was really good. On arrival the guard was obstructive and have confusing directions as if nobody had ever showed up there for a tour before. Need to advise customers they need to have passport ID with them. Guard refused to recognise any variant of ticket as valid, strange behaviour. Once inside staff were great and very helpful.

Response from Host, Oct 2025

We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed the tour, the VR experience, and the expertise of our guide. We truly apologize for the confusion upon arrival and any inconvenience it may have caused. Our guide was at the meeting point 15 minutes before the start of the tour, as scheduled, and as you can imagine, only the guide with the actual tickets can provide access to the Domus Aurea. We’re glad, however, that once inside you were as thrilled as we always are by this incredible site!

Enthusiastic and informative guide prior to official Domus Area visit. Handy alternative when the official tickets are difficult to obtain.

This tour wasn’t specifically for kids but our children loved it. I have been to Rome many times and have always wanted to go to Nero’s palace, and it is worth it. My children really enjoyed the experience.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Thank you for your feedback! We're delighted to hear that your children also enjoyed their visit to the Domus. Our guides are always committed to making experiences interesting and meaningful, even for young people. Furthermore, the Domus Aurea is a site rich in history and sublime frescoes. The events that transformed it from the most dazzling and luxurious house of Imperial Rome into a dark, mysterious, and romantic site truly spark the imagination of both adults and children, with the engaging narratives of our enthusiastic guide. Regards

Only Buy Official Ticket

Kate_B, Jun 2025
Important to know that the tour we paid for includes only a 20 minute lecture (done beautifully). Then, the guide/lecturer hands you off to the Domus Aurea's internal tour guides. No outside guides are allowed in and you can't just walk around on your own. You have to be part of the official tour. We paid for a "small tour" and the first 20 minutes outside was 4 of us (4 didn't show up), but the internal tour was more like 30 people with a very nice guide who spoke very broken English so it was hard to follow. I would recommend JUST buying the official ticket and NOT getting a tour from an outside vendor as they are not allowed in the facility. The internal ticket includes the tour and amazing virtual reality experience. For probably a LOT less money.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Thanks so much for your valuable feedback on optimizing the experience we offer. We're truly sorry that, due to a series of unfortunate concurrent circumstances, your experience wasn't of the high quality we strive to provide. We're happy to hear you appreciated your guide's 30-minute presentation outside the Domus on Nero's Rome, that only our company provides. We've sent an inquiry to the Domus management for clarification, as their guides are all archaeologists or historians and speak fluent English. Probably there was a last-minute guide substitution. Regarding the group size, the usual number of participants for the visit is 15-20 people, while the maximum is strictly set at 22, and groups enter the Domus 15 minutes apart. Regards

Fascinating trip into Ancient Rome

Cynthia_F, Jun 2025
Tour was fascinating - a mini Pompei right inside Rome. Incredibly well preserved frescos and such an interesting story. Tour guide was knowledgeable. Although brief, the VR tour was worth it. Best part though, might have been the fact that, being underground, it was a cool 65 degrees F on a 90 degree F day in Rome.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Thank you so much for your review! We're glad you appreciated both the history and the refreshing break from the Roman heat! It will mean a lot to us if you took the time to share your experience on our Tripadvisor Business page (Open Mind Tours) as well, it would really help us reach more travelers and continue to grow. Your support makes all the difference! Thanks again, and we hope to welcome you back to Rome soon!

Great experience specially the VR

Brigida_I, May 2025
The place is huge so wear comfy walking shoes. It was so incredible how it was built and the beauty.

Great Tour - VR Amazing, Even if Short

Lisa_B, Apr 2025
Overall, it was a really good experience and very unique. We loved the VR part of the tour the best. It was amazing to see Nero's palace come alive and see how the site looked throughout time with the short video. The site itself was beautiful and full of history. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars: while the tour guide at the start for the history part was lovely, I felt one had to know a lot of the history before the tour to really appreciate it. I studied art history in college; my partner did not. I came to the tour knowing a lot about Rome, Nero, and the Great Fire, but my partner said he left the history part still feeling confused about the timeline and Nero. The other reason it didn't get 5 stars was because, while amazing, the VR section was too short, and my googles wouldn't totally focus, so part of the experience felt "blurry." I would do the tour again, but I would recommend people unfamiliar with Nero read up on him and the Great Fire first to have a deeper appreciation of the site.

Pre-tour

Jane_P, Mar 2025
This is a pre-tour before you go into the Domus. There is another guide inside who does the official tour. A way to get in if the main site is sold out.

Amazing place

Jan_W, Mar 2025
Very cool location, it feels like you’re stepping back in time. The VR experience helps you get an understanding of what it actually looked like before it was buried. There were two guides for this, one outside that did a quick history of the location and one inside that that actually walked us through the palace. The guide inside was a bit dry and not very personable unfortunately. Otherwise a great tour.

Domus Aurea tour

Sanny_W, Dec 2024
Excellent tour and highly recommend it! Our tour guides were knowledgeable and it was so fascinating to see the site. They did a nice exhibit with the virtual reality portion as well.

Wowza site and brilliant guide

Wendy_J, Dec 2024
Jaw dropping archaeological site. Wonderful tour guides, inside and out. Our guide had such passion and knowledge, it was an amazing experience. (The meeting spot is the address provided on the street, not the site entrance)

Take this tour.

Jennifer_B, Nov 2024
Excellent tour! Amazing experience! Don't miss this one! New areas discovered each week. Virtual and live experience.

Great tour!

Nancy_S, Oct 2024
The guided were wonderful. We just love the underground villa. It was amazing. The history of everything beforehand was very informative!

Domus Aurea

Karl_S, Sep 2024
Great lead in tour by our guide. Fantastic and concise overview of the Roman Empire. Domus Aurea was stunning. The virtual reality experience was amazing. This is a must see tour for anyone who visits Rome.

Loved the virtual goggles!!

ANDRE_p, Sep 2024
We had 2 tour guides for this tour. The first tour guide that met us and walked us to the entrance was a great story teller and explained so much of the Roman Empire in a condensed easy to understand way. It really helped to have a good understanding of the what was next. The tour guide in the Domus was good but she had a very thick accent and in the beginning it was hard to follow the details of the excavation site. By the time we used the virtual glasses things made sense but I almost would have been better to have the virtual glasses first so we could visualize what we were seeing amongst the ruins. A great tour for anyone that loves Roman history. The ruins were quite cold compared to outside so a recommendation to bring a light sweater or scarf would help.

Very unique site with excellent guides

Ryan_G, Aug 2024
The site is very unique since it's Nero's ancient party house built below Trajan's public baths (you see elements of both). The tour has two guides, one outside the site and one inside. Both of ours were very good at their roles. Our guide inside the site was an archaeologist, which I'd like to see in more tours around Rome. I had a great experience with the VR headset, though my wife complained that hers was fuzzy (which may have been influenced by her glasses).

Great visit highly recommended

Deran_B, Jul 2024
The palace was amazing well worth the visit, theVR was stunning and the introduction from the guide outside was amazing very interesting, the one inside was interesting but a little scripted.

Problem footpath

Thomas_G, Oct 2025
Directions to the meeting point would be good. Google Maps leads wrongly, namely through blocked off terrain.
