What To Expect
Enjoy an aquatic adventure amidst the rugged islands of Portland’s Casco Bay during this 4-hour guided sea kayaking trip. This safe, fun, sea kayaking excursion is best way to get out of the city to discover this scenic coastal area from a new perspective.
Start your trip from Portland’s East End Beach, where you’ll meet your guide and get fitted with a high-quality, well-maintained kayak, plus a paddle and lifejacket. You’ll use a two-person kayak for your trip, as they tend to be more stable for novice paddlers, though solo kayaks are available upon request. Before heading out, your guide will provide an overview of your route and give a short safety lesson to ensure a fun time on the water.
Once the group is ready, launch from the beach and head out into Casco Bay. You’ll have some time to get comfortable with your boat along the shore before heading out into the open water on your first open water crossing. Your exact route on the day of the trip will depend on the day’s weather conditions and the experience level of participants, though there are countless options to suit nearly every traveler.
As you continue your paddle, smell the fresh salty air and keep your eyes peeled for marine life like seabirds and seals. Over the course of your trip you’ll pass by scenic lighthouses, beautiful wooden schooner ships, secluded beaches and a 19th-century fort. When it’s time to take a break, pull up at a favorite local island beach for snacks and some exploration time. You’re free to take a short hike, check out the tide pools, or even cool off with a quick swim. Finish your day back at your original starting point.

We met our guide, Peter, who carefully selected our life jackets to fit our build and then met our 8 member group. Next we went to our 2 man kayak and had the equipment adjusted. We were given a tutorial on how to use a kayak, and off we went. Peter has a two way radio to keep abreast of conditions and for safety. We then went out into Casco Bay to visit Mackworth Island. We then beached our kayaks and had a picnic with the group. On the way back we observed Seal Island from a distance to see seals and cormorants. As the currents changed on our way back he had us slightly change course to make it easier to paddle back. Throughout the trip, Peter, gave us fun facts of the Bay. It was a great workout and adventure. Would do it again.
