Basic but extremely informative. Timely. No bells and whistles so use a different tour if you want someone to explain it all. The plantation is very interesting. And has incredible sculptures and written explanations. The audio tour was excellent and our bus and guide, who was sweet, was timely.

Horrible depiction of the evil that took place

    crystal_w, Apr 2026
Not a true depiction of what plantation life was like for the slaves. No creativity or thought was put into re enacting the evil that took place there. An empty and awful rendition of the times. It’s a slap in the face to black people and a lie to white people. The owner should be ashamed, it’s just a money making attraction. They had a nerve to re due a slave shack with new wood as if the slaves lived in new construction. The master’s house was empty and very little items were there to represent the times. Where’s the hanging and whipping tree! Where’s the picking fields? Where’s master’s ugly face in a photo. Where’s the master’s house furniture? Where’s the whip and other hardware use to kill the bodies and spirits of the slaves. A truly horrible lack of any attempt towards the truths of this major time in history! The mosquitoes were out of control, someone should exterminate the grounds while they’re putting up their new pretty construction. Lies! Lies! Lies! Soooo disrespectful to portray a park like scene. It’s a money maker. The store was the best thing there but it was the worst thing there. This place should be free, especially to black people. Enough of blood and free labor has been paid. Shameful! I will tell everyone don’t waste your time or money! Sad injustice!

Crystal, thank you for sharing your experience. We’re sorry it didn’t provide the depth and connection you were looking for. We provide seamless round-trip transportation for our guests to the Whitney plantation but we hear your concerns. For those looking for a deeper, more guided discussion around the realities of slavery, Black history, and culture, our Soul of New Orleans tour is where we’re able to really bring that connection and context to life.

Great transportation to and from the site. The site/museum has done a wonderful job of telling the story of this place through those who were enslaved there - it was well worth the time to visit.

    Cherry_C, Feb 2026
The plantation was a very educational and sobering history lesson in the slavery. Definitely do not miss it; could have spent more time here reading all the stories. Though there were other tours that arrived after us, it never felt crowded. We had hotel pick up which was prompt but the speaker was not working on the mini van so you could not hear anything that the tour guide was saying.

Poor Organisation for pick-up. Trip o.k.

    Lorraine_R, Feb 2026
There was a mix up between Viator and 2nd Line Tours about the pick-up which was not a big problem, although 2nd Line Tours should have been in contact before the trip date to let us know the change of location. As there were only 6 of us on the trip and we were all picked up at the same location at 8.30 why was it necessary to leave us standing in the freezing cold for 30 mins? By all means have a 'window' of 8am to 8.30 for hotel pick ups but have the main parking lot location at a scheduled time. There was also no reason why a small bus could not have picked up from Bienville Hotel, 100 yards into the French quarter. Our driver, (Nage?) was very good and drove well but it would have been more interesting had she been able to give us some more background information about the area or had something taped to play during the drive. What she did tell us was very interesting but it only lasted about 15 mins of the 2 hour journey Witney Plantation was worthwhile and we had 2 hours there to self-guide. It is only a half day tour as we were back by 12.30.

    Response from Host, Mar 2026

Hi Lorraine, Thank you for your feedback. We’d like to clarify that the pick-up details and timing were provided in advance through Viator, and the tour operated as scheduled. We do understand that any confusion can be frustrating, and we’ll continue working to make communication as clear as possible. We’re glad you still found the experience worthwhile and enjoyed your driver.

    Deeply moving experience

Our tour bus driver was kind, friendly, informative, and helpful. The plantation tour was sobering and provided space for thoughtful reflection on such a painful part of our history in the United States.

This was definitely a must do. I learned so much on this excursion. Well thought out and detailed execution, even self guided was easy.

    Powerful Experience

Visiting the Whitney Plantation was one of the most powerful experiences of our trip, and we are so grateful we decided to take this tour. The history shared there is moving, sobering, and important, and it left a lasting impression on us. The tour company made everything seamless, picking us up right from our hotel in the French Quarter. Our driver and guide, Jay, was excellent—he got us there and back safely, while sharing thoughtful and informative commentary along the way. His knowledge really added to the overall experience. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting New Orleans.

A must see excursion! Self-guide tour! Powerful and life changing experience! True impaction of cruel American history of people of color and harsh inhumane treatment of slavery!!

Thanks so much! We're glad you enjoyed the tour. Hope to see you again!

Excellent trip to Whitney Plantation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Winnie_L, Apr 2025
Excellent trip to the Whitney Plantation. I am reviewing 2nd Line and not the plantation tour, which is worthwhile and very powerful. This is an easy way to get to the plantation. The hotel pickup and drop off is a plus. Our driver, Chris, was very professional and on time. I appreciated that he called me just before 8am to let me know that, as the last pickup, I would be picked up around 8:25 am (so I would not be waiting around for 25 min). The drive is around 45 min each way and our departure time of 11:15am was enough for me to see everything that I wanted to.

Really powerful look at how these plantations lived and breathed and an often forgotten truth to the whole timeline of the slave trade and who stopped it. This place is a great visit for all of the family, just make sure you give yourself enough time on the self guided tour to read all the internal posters and reflect on what they say!!! Also look out for Candy Land, ‘Big Daddy’s’ House on the way out from Django Unchained film.

Was a really good place to see and walk round i love the way it focused on the slavery and not the plantation owner

    Eye opening tour

    Amanda_O, Feb 2025
The self-paced walk around the plantation was well planned and informative. Definitely would recommend visiting the Whitney Plantation to learn about Code Noire, life of a slave and their rebellions. Wish we’d had more time to explore. The bus ride were bucket seats with no padding, so if you have a bad back, I’d suggest using a different tour provider!

    Really interesting Tour

    Jane_M, Feb 2025
Very interesting, really enjoyed the self guided tour, we didn't want to just visit a plantation, we wanted to learn about the history

    Amazing experience

    Nicole_H, Feb 2025
It was an amazing experience. It was powerful to hear the words from individuals that actually use to be slaves.

    Feel ripped off

    Carol_W, Dec 2024
This was a fascinating plantation, and we enjoyed they information that we saw but we were unable to get to all of them. We were disappointed to only have 90 minutes to walk through the space and the the grounds outside. We needed more time. This is especially important, given the price and that we were driven one hour and a half to go there and return in the about the same amount of time. 3 hours! We paid a lot for this tour, but we didn't get a lot of time for our visit. The driver insisted we had to leave at 11:30. When we had only arrived there, at 9:45 a m. I was extremely disappointed. Won't use you again.

    An Experience

    Camille_B, Aug 2024
I knew I wanted to see this plantation after reading the article in Glamour about how it will never host weddings as it's their mission to dismantle any romantic notions about its grounds. The tour lasted the perfect amount of time and I liked that it was self guided once at the destination. I would recommend this tour company also. Make sure that you put mosquito repellent on prior.

    Lots of great information

Great tour and very informative! I did the self guided tour, but i wouldn’t mind going for a guided tour as well.

Walking in the footsteps of my Ancestors

African American History is American History! When we understand our past we can embrace and change our present. It was enlightening and heartbreaking to walk in the footsteps of my ancestors.

    Whitney Plantation Tour May 2024

    Joseph_H, May 2024
(NOLA) 2nd Line Tours – Whitney Plantation Many thanks to Dennis for making the ride to the Whitney plantation fun, which we did on 18 May 2024. The history lessons and stories along the way were informative! Your recommendation to “We Dats” was PERFECT for lunch! The tour was with a small group, maybe a dozen people on the bus. This was our first time visiting a plantation, and we were looking forward to discussing our perspectives and take-aways as my wife is African American and I am Caucasian. My wife described the experience as heavy, heartbreaking, enlightening, and powerful. Her tears flowed as she listened to the stories and viewed the exhibits, remembering stories told to her by her great-grandfather about his life. She commented that the resilience and strength of those men and women caused her to feel grateful and blessed. My experience was difficult as well. To realize that we could treat other people in such a horrible way. And to occasionally, even today, see someone who disapproves glaring at a mixed couple is depressing as hell. We highly recommend this tour. The grounds were beautiful and the exhibits, audio stories and additional display inside the gift shop were very impactful. You may even catch sight of a few alligators! Recommendations- bug spray for the mosquitos and tissues…. At the end of the tour, Dennis suggested a second tour to us discussing the cultural history of New Orleans. (NOLA) 2nd Line Tours – History of New Orleans Thanks to Jay for this informative cultural tour! We appreciated his love for his city and his “tell it like it is” attitude. Studio Be was amazing! Everyone needs to view Brandan’s talent. Visiting the McDonogh 19 Elementary School building was powerful. Hearing her story about her experience and then walking up those steps was like taking a walk back in time. The back mural…just WOW! The Lower Ninth Ward part of the tour was heartbreaking. Being in the exact places we saw underwater on the news and seeing the levy and the area that broke was crazy! The worst was the recognition that the condition of the 9th Ward has not improved much over these years. It’s sad to see that an area that once represented Black Ownership now resembles remnants of a battleground. Sadly, gentrification is coming. Thank you for offering us insight and first-hand views in places that most tours don’t venture to. It was enlightening! There’s so much more than Food, Jazz, Bourbon St and Mardi Gras if you care to learn about it! This tour shows you REAL TIME history.

    Exceptional plantation tour.

Jay, our driver, did a great job. Alongre the route he ecplained about points of interest. Whitney plantation was an interesting and educational experience although sad how slaves were treated. This is well worth the visit. Highly recommended. The self guided audio tour was exceptional and sllowed for taking the experience at one's own pace.

I think you are missing quite an opportunity by not advertising this place as a great nature-lovers destination. My two friends and I are photographers and we spent most our time there photographing the birds, the fauna, the lizards, and even a water snake. I'd definitely recommend it to lovers of nature. As far as the historical part of it, I couldn't tell you much about it since we spent our time on the grounds.

    Heartbreaking

    Lori_B, Apr 2024
It truly was chilling to walk the grounds of the poor enslaved people of this country’s past. I feel it’s a must that everyone takes these tours so we don’t repeat this history and continue to improve as human beings.
