While most Voodoo tours in New Orleans are led by non-initiates or those with no experience in the religion, you will lead by a High Priestesses of Louisiana Plantation Vodou. Eshé/Mary J. has lineage to 1700's-era Louisiana, while Malika/Osheyo Amanzi is related to the Gullah-Geechee of the Atlantic coast, with their own West African-based religions.

The tour guide was knowledgeable and dispelled many myths about voodoo. However, she was a bit ADHD and would jump between thoughts, and so I struggled to keep track of who was who and what they symbolized. Also, my friend on the trip is from Ghana and he disagreed with the tour guide's explanations. She made her explanation sound like the dominant form of spirituality on Africa, when in reality each region/tribe has its own beliefs (of which she was mainly speaking about a Nigerian spiritual system).

I’m glad you noted I made it clear that my information was Nigerian, as that’s where my initiations were held; Ghana, your husband’s homeland, is a completely different country, and as I stated in the tour, West Africans are not one monolithic people, and in any one West African country, there are easily upwards of 50-100+ different languages.
I can only share what I know, and make it clear where I learned the information/what country those traditions were born, and I’m glad to hear it sounds like I did that.
The tour is also about Louisiana Plantation Vodou/Voodoo, as that’s the tradition in which I am a priestess~ again, not Ghana.
I don’t believe the tour was advertised as speaking of Ghanaian tradition as the focal point.
Our guide was wonderful and so very well educated on the history and culture of the area and Voodoo traditions.

This was an OUTSTANDING tour and VERY informative. Be advised, you will learn some very important history of NOLA, and some of that history is traumatic. Also, this is listed as a walking tour, but it is fairly light and restricted to a fairly small area within the park, and the guide provides times to sit on benches to listen to the stories and histories of the area.

This tour was amazing! Our guide was so knowledgeable (of course! She is a priestess!), sweet and thorough! She gave us ample opportunity to ask questions, have conversations and was able to integrate and dispell Hollywood lore from what is truth.
If you want to learn the true spiritual history of new orleans, I cannot recommend this tour enough. Our experience with high priestess Malika was exactly on point. She took extra time to answer our questions and took us on a very educational and informed tour of the Treme and explained many aspects of the African religions & history of New Orleans. I can honestly say that I have never learned so much new information in a 2-hour period.

This tour with Malika was extremely interesting. I learned a lot and many misconceptions were corrected. It completely changed my view of VooDoo. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in facts over fiction.

This unforgettable walking tour offers more than just a glimpse into New Orleans’ voodoo culture—it opens a doorway into the deep roots of African Traditional Religions (ATRs), honoring both ancestry and spirituality. Led by High Priestess Malika, the experience felt authentic, respectful, and alive. Her energy and knowledge captivated our group from start to finish, and she welcomed every question with care and clarity.
One of the most powerful moments was visiting the sacred Egun tree—I truly felt its energy. A beautiful surprise: the appearance of butterflies (you’ll have to take the tour to learn why they matter). We also stopped by the home of Marie Laveau - a memorable moment.
If you're curious about voodoo beyond the myths, this tour is a must. It’s spiritual, historical, and deeply human. Highly recommend.

The entire tour is in Louis Armstrong Park, the guide did an excellent job imparting information while walking the group from site to site. She was warm, funny and took the time to ask about and get to know each group if not individual on the tour. Highly recommend!

This was an amazing tour for me to tie together my African spirituality to the research and the journey I have begun. I was able to fact check the authenticity of some of what Malika was saying from what I already know and then add even more to the oral history she shared. I felt so complete after this tour and know I am on the right path of connecting to my ancestors and regaining what was taken from us during the slave trade. I highly recommend!
