- Vehicles used on the road to Hana are not wheelchair accessible. Participants must be ambulatory. No walkers, wheelchairs and/or scooters, of any kind, are permitted.
- Hawaii State Law requires that children under 10 must be in an appropriate child passenger safety seat/booster seat unless the child is over 4 feet 9 inches tall. NOTE: We do not provide safety seats and you would need to supply your own.
- Anyone with heart, back problems, or other serious medical conditions cannot participate in the tour. Oxygen tanks, or generators are not permitted.
- Special needs requests (except lunch) must be called in to the local supplier at least 1 week prior to tour date. All special needs requests are handled and accommodated on a situational basis.
- We provide a continental breakfast (locally baked pastries in tropical flavors and fresh grown Maui fruits). There are no hot beverages served but you are welcome to bring your own in a to-go cup. Special lunch requests (including vegetarian requests) require a minimum of 48 hours notice.
- Tour schedule/stops are subject to change due to weather, traffic, park closures, road closures, timing and/or other various unforeseen circumstances.
- No luggage or large bags. All bags must fit under seat.
- Absolutely no alcohol or drugs onboard. No drinking alcohol or doing drugs while on tour.
- Maximum weight for passenger is 325 lbs. (147 kg).

The small group road to Hana tour with Mahalo Tours was excellent. Our tour guide was Larry and he was awesome! He was so knowledgeable about Maui and all of Hawaii. It was amazing how many types of flowers and vegetation he pointed out to us as well as historical facts. Larry was very engaging and it was obvious that he enjoys his jobs. He was personable and really “made” the trip. The tour was all that it was advertised to be. We saw SO much beauty. I would highly recommend this tour and ask for Larry!

The driver picked us up on time at our Kannapali resort. Once everyone was aboard we had a group of 8 people including the driver. The van is very comfortable with huge windows, and you want that as there is a lot to see that can't be stopped for. We enjoyed all the stops we made and our driver/guide Anthony was knowledgeable and fun. The banana bread and fruit in the morning was good. We were given a choice of chicken or pork for a Hawaiian style hot lunch. My husband and I chose chicken, and while the portion was generous it was fair at best. This needs to improve greatly to match the cost of the tour. Overall would recommend this tour.
It is a very long day. And because of limits on sprinter vans you are not allowed to go all the way around the island so you go in and come back over the same route. Also our guide tried to be entertaining rather than just informative. We also saw other guides who would go with their groups at the stops to explain what you could do there and what to see. I would confirm your tour is in a vehicle small enough to go around the island.
Wonderful day! Glenn was a terrific tour guide. Knowledgeable and engaging. And many good snacks along the way. Word of advice…wear shoes you can go swimming in, not flip flops. Walking in the swim areas is rocky and hard to navigate if you don’t have the right shoes.

Our guide Eddy was so knowledgeable. It was really interesting to here about the history and about the plants and animal life in this area. All the food and snacks were really great. The huli huli chicken lunch was the best. I would highly recommend this trip. I know people say you can it yourself but believe me the road is hair rasing plus the driver wouldn't get to enjoy the views or where were the best places to stop. Totally amazing trip loved every minute. Irs a must.
I was really disappointed with this experience. I had messaged to confirm the pick up time of 7:45 am the morning of since the viator app had a different time than the message from the tour guide. I got an almost immediate response which was great. I go out front of my hotel at 7:40 and was waiting for over 45 minutes. I sent messages and even tried calling but I didn't get any response. I ended up calling viator and they sent an email, which Mahalo Tours eventually responded to later in the morning. Apparently the tour guide had picked up the wrong person. Though I'm not sure how this happened unless they went to the wrong hotel bc I didn't see a vehicle for Mahalo Tours or someone asking for attendees for any tour. I also don't understand why I couldn't get in touch with anyone at the time.
I had changed my flight and rearranged my trip to include this tour. So it's disappointing I wasn't able to go on it. Though I feel like it could easily have been avoided if the guide checked who they were picking up and if I could've gotten in touch with literally anyone around the time of pick up.
I'm on the fence if i would try booking with Mahalo Tours again. They have good reviews and I wasn't expecting to hear from them at all so I do appreciate that they responded and took full responsibility for what happened. And I got a refund. They did also ask if I was available another day so I guess they would have rescheduled me but unfortunately this was my last full day in Hawaii.

As a Hawaiian owned tour operator, we pride ourselves on providing personalized, small group experiences, and we welcome many solo travelers on our tours without charging a minimum of two seats or not taking them at all as our competition. In this instance, a mix-up during the early morning pickup process occurred, and we failed to connect with you before departure. We fully take responsibility for this oversight and the frustration it caused during your limited time on Maui.
Regrettably, our driver observed a solo passenger waiting at the pickup location at the hotel and assumed it was you, rather than following our standard protocol of verifying the guest's name before departure.
We are glad our office team was able to get Viator to issue an immediate full refund and reach out to address what happened. However, we have since reviewed our pickup verification procedures and dispatch communication channels to ensure solo passengers and morning inquiries are never missed again.

The best way to tour the Road to Hana. Guides are so knowledgeable and have all the best spots to stop for photos and experiences. I would have regretted trying to drive myself and miss all the sights along the way. Don't stress on your vacation, enjoy and let the guide make this a fabulous experience!
Amazing day with Alma! We hit all of the stops, met locals, had a fantastic lunch at Uncle Russel's restaurant and met George! The banana bread and chili at Aunt Sandy's was perfect! The fresh fruit from Kai was worth the stop- we literally put the lime in the coconut and drank from bamboo straws. Alma was a gift - she went out of her way to make sure our family made memories and had laughs all along the way! So thankful for the experience!
Pro tip: Don't drive it yourself- trust me- the experience won't be the same! Not fair to the driver who will be stressed the whole time! Bring water shoes and cash to support the local vendors - everything is fresh!
Full disclosure- we had a group of 8 - so we didn't have to pick up other parties!
Don’t miss this once in a lifetime experience! We swam in waterfalls, climbed lava rocks, explored a black sand beach and ate local grinds on a red sand beach. We were so grateful to our fantastic guide Glen for a day’s worth of stories and his expert driving skills!
Larry worked really hard to let us have a great time. He was an awesome driver. I’m not sure how he managed those turns.
It is a very long day. Our party consisted of adults and seniors. I could not imagine having young children on this trip. We saw beautiful rain forests. Our guide described all of the vegetation. Waterfalls galore. Black and red sand beaches. Swimming opportunities. Sea Turtles. The quaint town of Hana is in a beautiful setting. Very curvy road.
Kawai was the best guide we have ever had on a tour. We had such an amazing time, and all the fun photos were great. All admission fees were paid for by the tour group. We made so many extra stops, had a great time, and learned so much. I would take this tour again just for the fun time.

Glenn the driver I would give 5 stars. Exceptional driver. Bathrooms were terrible, no toilet paper, full toilets where there were one and porta potties for the rest. For a tour as beautiful as Maui do better.

I'm so sorry, but unfortunately we're not responsible for the public bathrooms, the Hawai’i State and Maui county Parks Divisions manages those facilities. Unfortunately, everyone that traverses the Hana road uses these the same restrooms because it’s very limited and isolated area of Maui.

Our tour guide, Thomas, was amazing! He was so knowledgeable and made the trip fun! He knew all of the best stops for the best views, food and dips in the water. I highly recommend this excursion to Hana!
We had a fabulous adventure. Great tour guide named Adam. We saw lots of waterfalls, black sand beach, red sand beach and many other places. I’m glad we did the tour instead of driving it ourselves. I would not have been able to enjoy it if I was driving.

Definitely a great idea to take the road to Hana with an experienced tour guide! The switchbacks and the beautiful scenery would have made it difficult for an inexperienced traveler to navigate. Jerry, our driver/guide, was a great! He was knowledgeable and personable - made sure we all got questions answered and needs met.
Only hiccup was a delay in our pickup due to an accident on the road and some guests being late to their pickup but that is not the fault of Maholo Tours at all. They were texting me updates as to their ETA and even the driver called to apologize and give me his arrival time.

We picked this tour because it was small- 6 to 8 people and we got picked up from our hotel. Unfortunately our pickup was at 712 am and then we drove to a spot and waited 45 minutes for other customers. We didn’t get on the round until almost 845. I called from the van to complain and the company said it was my fault I picked a bad day. Once the tour started, we were behind the traffic. We had several stops and always seemed to be waiting for someone to get back to the van or stopping for the bathroom. The best place is the black sand beach and we only got 1 hour there which is not enough time if you want to swim. You really don’t do anything in Hana but drive through and turn around. The only saving grace was the tour guide Adam was excellent. Patient, kind and very informative. I would not take this tour. Overpriced for a “ride” and you have to follow the group. I would either rent a car for the day and drive yourself. If you do, go online and get a reservation to stop at the black sand beach. If you don’t want to drive, I would do a private tour with your group only. There are several to choose from.

We would like to clarify a few details regarding your experience. Pick-up windows and itineraries are carefully structured to account for Maui’s traffic conditions, weather and while brief pauses occur as we coordinate departures, our GPS records show that we left for Hana on schedule. Regarding your call to our office, we sincerely apologize if any part of that conversation felt dismissive. Our intention is never to shift blame, but rather to explain how peak travel days can impact road conditions along the pick up locations and highway.
The Road to Hana is designed as a sightseeing journey through multiple coastal viewpoints, historical stops, and natural landmarks. Time allocated at each locationincluding the 60 minutes at Waianapanapa State Park (Black Sand Beach) is structured to ensure guests can safely experience all scheduled stops while adhering to strict state park permit regulations.
Supervising the flow of a small group tour does require managing group dynamics. When individual passengers take extra time at stops as you mention bathrooms our guides including Adam do their best to handle the situation with patience, respect and grace while trying to keep the entire group on schedule.
For guests who prefer a different pace or full control over time spent at each stop, a private tour or self-drive option is indeed a great alternative.

Enjoyed our Road to Hana today. Our driver, Larry, was so knowledgeable about Hawaiian culture. His narration was interesting and never boring. He was delightful, a safe driver and a great storyteller - a true Hawaiian Encyclopedia!! Food and snacks were good. I highly recommend Mahalo Tours. We chose the “small group” tour. This certainly made it a more enjoyable experience.
I was racially profiled by a white tour guide and mistreated in front of the entire group as a solo black female traveler! I was told that talking in the van was not something amenable with the tour guide. I had to spend over 8 hours feeling incredibly unsafe, disrespected and not cared for at all! I did not want to be left over an hour from my Airbnb so I sucked the behavior up. Viator refuses to issue my refund and is completely downplaying how this all happened.
From the time I walked up to the van, I was made to the stand in the rain to check in. Once in the van, I was asked “if I wanted to share my life story with everyone in the van” because I was having a low toned conversation with another patron in the van. I was made to feel that because of my race and my gender, I needed to be quiet. The other patron was a white woman and was not at all scorned for having a conversation. I was not over talking the tour guide nor was I loud so I don’t understand why I couldn’t engage in a simple conversation while we were driving to our destination.
These one off experiences have a way of becoming the fault of the patron and not the tour company but I beg you, if you are SOLO, FEMALE AND BLACK, do NOT use Viator or Mahalo Tours for any tour experiences. It isn’t worth the hassle and poor experience whatsoever.

We are very surprised that you felt racially profiled. We know that nothing that we say will change your mind, but we strongly reject your allegations. We would like to go through your complaint point by point.
It was raining lightly when we were picking up passengers. We are not sure what exactly you expected us to do about that. Every single passenger on the tour had to stand outside to wait for the van and wait to load. You were not singled out in any way.
Both you and the other female passenger you were speaking with were asked to “keep it down” so that the driver could be heard by the group. The reason was because the international couple onboard were unable to hear him and had taken him aside to request that he bring it up. Neither you nor she were happy with the request, yet only you have decided that it was personally motivated.
Viator conducted their own investigation because of the seriousness of the allegations. The reason that Viator refused your request for a refund was because the international couple who asked the driver to speak out provided a statement to that fact, proving that you were not racially singled out.
Lastly, we would like you to know that your accusations were highly offensive to the driver due to the fact that he is married to an African American woman and has half-black children. He vigorously denies that he would ever treat someone in a way that he would not find acceptable for his own family. He is one of our highly reviewed tour guide and valued employee.

Great driver. He was so personable and was accommodating to anything we wanted. Definitely the way to go to see the road.
This is an all day excursion but totally worth it. The food and snacks were delicious and it's a lot safer than driving yourself. You learn a lot and get to see everything. Charlie, our tour guide, was a lot of fun, knowledgeable and took great photos! We had a wonderful time.
Adam was amazing. Took us to amazing places. You move fast on road and he would let you know when to have camera ready. When we would get out he would help with pics. He talked through trip to give us story on area. He was excellent and so was the experience.
Our Driver Charlie was great!! Bus was very large for the 8 passengers. Lunch was hot and fantastic. Would travel with this company again.
Glen was our driver and guide and he was amazing. He was extremely knowledgeable about Maui, and Hana specifically. We learned so much about all the plants, animals, history and Hawaiian stories and he was funny. My mother is almost 80 and he took special care to make sure she was comfortable and doing well. The food was great and we enjoyed each of the stops with including the waterfall pools, black sand beach and the red sand beach. We would highly recommend Glen and this tour!

Tom was an excellent guide. The tour stopped at places we would not have known about had we driven on our own. Everything ran like clockwork. So many snacks were provided. Our favorite stop was the black sand beach where we could hike and then cool off in the water!
We saw huge sea turtles slumbering on the beach.
Great all-day excursion traveling to Hana - this part of the island is beautiful but not sure I would want to drive the local road on my own! Great to have a knowledgeable tour guide to share his knowledge of the sites and some Hawaiian history including cultural folklore.
