What To Expect
After making your own way to the San Diego Zoo on the day of your choice, you can head into the zoo's visitor center to pick up a map and plan your route through this acclaimed zoo. The animals live in spacious and beautifully designed enclosures that replicate their natural habitats. The koala and giant panda exhibits are always popular, as are the orangutans and siamangs that climb around in lush forest settings.
Other highlights include the Tiger River exhibit, which features a realistic Asian rainforest environment, and the Gorilla Tropics, which recreates a lush African rainforest. Zoo keeper talks take place at regular intervals every day, with the experts introducing animals such as giraffes, elephants, wolves, lions or jaguars, and more. In the animal nursery, you might get to see some of the zoo’s newest arrivals.
Kids enjoy petting small tame critters in the Petting Paddock and four different play zones provide a safe and entertaining spot to climb and explore.
As you make your way through the zoo, note the extensive gardens — some of the plants growing there supply ingredients for the specialized diets of particular zoo residents.

Many animals are asleep or hiding so you do not get to see them all. The guides suggest coming back late in the day after 4:30 to see them. Also, the young staff are very poorly trained. They don’t know a lot, and seem to be very disinterested in their jobs. The volunteers, however we’re fabulous!

The zoo is huge! Definitely can take a whole day to see everything BUT it was wonderful and we enjoyed it!

What a ginormous and impressive zoo! So much to see. We enjoyed eating at Albert’s. There were very helpful guides throughout the park. I wish we could have stayed longer to see even more! Great experience.

I recommend this to a friend but I wish they would do the bus stops like they used to before. But overall it’s a really good zoo.

We spent a beautiful day at the zoo! The exhibits were wonderful! We really enjoyed the sky tram and seeing the Giant Pandas was the highlight of the visit. Koalas, elephants, giraffes!! So fun!!

The zoo is very nice but looking worn. Needs cleaning n a little updating. THERE'S A REAL NEED FOR ADDITIONAL SIGNGE. The map is ok, but ur constantly asking for directions.

Started the day with the bus tour which was a wonderful introduction and overview of the zoo. Jet was a knowledgeable and entertaining guide! Then we picked our favorite spots to visit for the remainder of our time.

The San Diego Zoo was absolutely amazing — hands down the best zoo I have ever been to! The exhibits were incredible, beautifully designed, and gave you such a great view of all the animals. The entire zoo was extremely clean and very well maintained.
The zoo bus tour is a must-do and such a great way to see everything and learn more about the animals. The Skyfari tram is also a must — the views are amazing, and I loved that both the bus tour and tram were included with admission.
Parking was easy, and the zoo map was simple to follow, which made navigating such a large zoo stress-free. We had such a wonderful time exploring and making memories with family.
I would absolutely go again and highly recommend adding the San Diego Zoo to your list!

I got to see most of the animals I wanted to see—except the pandas which appeared to be a separate ticket? It was a nice, fun day regardless and I definitely will be coming back.

It's a lot of walking to see the whole park. But it's worth it. We walked for over 6 hours. Many of the animals were active and visible. Our favorites were all the big cats, the meerkats, and the polar bears.

Lots of fun seeing all the animals. We were there while they refilling the feeders for the Elephants and got to see them come out and go straight for thier favorites. The koala where upnin the trees so visible but sleepy lol.

A very good day out, had plenty of time to see all the animals. Would suggest that on arrival that you head to the Panda enclosure as that is very popular although on our visit we just walked into the enclosure and watched the Pandas eating. It is worth a visit.

We had a great time. Got there as it opened and it was not very crowded. We were able to walk right in to see the pandas. By late afternoon there was a line.

First time visiting the zoo and it did not disappoint! The online tips said it probably takes 6-7 hours to see everything and they were not kidding. We stayed around 7 hours and still didn’t see it all. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and unlike any zoo I’ve ever visited. The conservation abounds and shows how much the animals are cared for here. We took the bus tour first thing which was a great way to get our bearings. We then took the tram up to the top and walked down to see the sights. Would definitely recommend this approach to save energy as the zoo is basically uphill! We loved seeing all the animals but especially the giraffes, elephants, and meerkats! Enjoy!

This Zoo is spectacular!! My husband and I first came here for our Honeymoon. We returned for our 27th Anniversary!! I love how close you can get to the animals without being in harms way. There's so many places to eat and they're not your typical pizza, hot dogs or burgers. I would highly recommend taking a full day(yes, it will take a full day) and seeing this zoo.

LOVED. Recommend the bus tour to start - it helps you to see the different areas so you know where you want to go in what order; plus you see a lot of animals. Bottom of bus lets you stand and walk around during the tour. Animals have feeding schedules know them for the ones you absolutely want to see and time to be there at that time. There's also a safari that is a separate experience and location. We don't know about it and would have loved to check that out too.
