What To Expect
Begin this Private guided day trip from Rome to Tuscany by getting picked up in your hotel in the center of Rome. Relax in the air-conditioned Mercedes Vehicle as you make your way north to Tuscany, passing through the rolling hills, some clad in vineyards, of northern Lazio and southern Tuscany. During the drive learn from your driver about the history of the area and about the types of wine you may be sampling that day.
The first stop is the hilltop medieval town of Montepulciano, known for its acclaimed wine Vino di Nobile and Rosso di Montepulciano. Walk the narrow cobbled lanes of the town, And if you wish, you can also descend into a winery that you find in the city center to sample some of the its wines. Then descend into a wine cellar to sample some of the goods. Formerly used as a tomb by the pre-Roman Etruscans, the wine cellar is an ambient venue in which to sample some locally made vino.
Next head to the charming medieval village of Bagno Vignoni, located on a hill surrounded by the Valley Orcia river and famous also for its thermal waters used since Roman times - the village is built around its central 'piazza of water', a huge pool of thermal water. Spend some time walking around this beautiful and unique village and capture the vibrant atmosphere of the place.
After, continue on to the Montalcino wine area, 25 miles (40 kilometers) away. Enjoy the extreme Tuscan views of the villa-topped hills and vineyards during the drive. Take a tour of a well-known winery and learn about its winemaking techniques followed by a Typical Tuscan light lunch
The last stop on the tour is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of Pienza. Stroll the streets as the guide explains how 14th-century Pope Pius II designed the unique layout of the town. Pop into a local cheese factory and sample some of Pienza's famous pecorino cheese.
When the time comes, hop back in the minivan for the ride back to your hotel in Rome.

Total highlight of our Italy Trip. Khan was a skilled, knowledgeable passionate escort. By selecting a small tour, we were in a Mercedes Van, able to go to areas that bus tours did not go. The wineries and lunch were fabulous. When an unexpected storm blocked us in at a winery, Khan worked his magic to make sure we still got to see everything that was promised, even though our tour ran late. Total Professional. Just a remainder - if you are Canadian, know your limits of wine purchase. Even though the wineries offer free shipping, you are responsible for duties, customs and clearance. In Ontario we had to pay 102 of bottle purchase to LCBO to clear customs taxes brokerage. It was a very expensive case!

This was a great tour. We have done many tours but doing a small private tour was just a difference maker. Our guide Roberto was absolutely wonderful. Informative, timely and personable. We loved every single stop, and felt like we had plenty of time at each location. Th wine tasting as incredible, especially with the lunch included. Highly recommend!

I was a little disappointed in the experience. I guess I expected more than what was provided.
Our driver was great! He was very courteous and took us to all of the places that were listed as a part of the tour. He also made suggestions for things to do and places to see.
The winery that was chosen for the experience had great wine and I appreciate that it was an all women run winery, I just felt that it was not what I expected. Maybe that type of winery is the only one on this area. In addition, what was described as lunch I would not consider lunch. It was more like a charcuterie board with dessert. BTW, I did end up purchasing wine from this winery.

Tour was very good. Enjoyed all the stops and especially the wine tasting. The owner of the vineyard was very nice and we learned a lot about wine. It is a long day but worth it.

Unbelievable trip! We booked this trip last thinking it was too much travel for our little one. We decided to go for it and do not regret it. Our driver and guide was amazing!! We saw so much, ate amazing foods, best views I’ve ever seen, and drank maybe too much. Book this trip!!!!

One of our favourite tours in Italy. While not being a huge wine drinker, just the opportunity to head out into the Tuscany countryside was fantastic. The scenery was beautiful, the towns we visited were extremely picturesque and, most importantly, there were no huge numbers of tourists jostling you at every moment. It was just a lovely, quiet way of getting a great view of the real Italian countryside. I loved everything about this tour!

Max and Giancarlo took us through Tuscany in a comfortable Mercedes van. We toured 3 villages and 2 fabulous wineries with several photo op stops along the way. It was more than we expected. Our hearts remain in Tuscany.

Our tour guide was great. He knew a lot about the region and did not rush us on to the next place. Excellent

Convenient hotel pickup in Rome and 2 hour drive to Tuscany in small van with just one other couple. Several wine tastings and lovely pasta lunch at a winery with some fine Brunello. Stop at Pienza, a nice town with great views of Tuscany and wonderful shops

A good tour, but a lot of driving in the shuttle van. Total elapsed tour time around 12-13 hours. Stopped at two wineries for tastings and lunch. Also, stopped at two of the UNESCO towns. Beautiful scenery and quaint small towns. On reflection would have likely opted for a tour with fast train to Florence combined with a tour of the wine country. This is not an inexpensive tour by any means so more time touring and less time on the road would have been better.

Great day, beautiful scenery, 2 great wineries a dan very knowledgeable guide. Highly recommend.

What a great day, our guide was quite a character and certainly helped to make the day enjoyable. The two wine tastings were fantastic, couldn't have asked for a better day. Glad I chose to do this small group tour, would certainly recommend this day trip to everyone.
Valery_L, Oct 2017
Loved the tour, but the tour guide was rude and creepy! We didn't feel like we could ask questions because the tour guide would give us snarky answers or be downright rude. The tour itself is amazing!!!!!

Got picked up on time don't forget to contact them the day before so they know where to pick you up from We were with 3 other couples and found the very back seat uncomfortable and not a great view out the window the front seats would be the best Loved the first winery we went to, but the 2nd was just ok. The hill top towns we visited were our main reason for choosing this tour and they didn't disappoint.

This was a fabulous day trip I would recommend to anyone. Khan, our enthusiastic and skilled driver and guide, picked us up at our hotel door on time. There were seven in the group, four Texans and us three Scots. Hit it off immediately and spent an enjoyable day together. Khan is a real asset. He drives well on frequently twisty roads, has a bright and happy personality, goes out of his way to consider his guests' needs and and he knows his Tuscany. A perfect day from start to finish. Twelve glorious hours in a spectacularly beautiful part of Italy.
The first stop, in Montepulciano, was to have a look at the town itself and then to visit the underground winery and former torture chamber! of the Ercolani family. Second son Niccolo showed us around and then led us through an excellent wine-tasting session, with tasty local specialties to try with the various wines. A generous amount and type of wine and food!
Second main stop was in Montalcino, where we visited a larger-scale wineyard, where a simple but enjoyable lunch was again chased down with a selection of the various house wines and a visit of the actual factory.Once again, the guide was very interesting and knowledgeable and it was much appreciated, even if some of the scenery was starting to slip out of focus as a result of generous pourings of sample wines. On the way back we visited Pienza for a brief stop and walk around.
I would certainly recommend this day out. It starts at 7.00 am and lasts a full 12 hours, but ti didn't feel long at any point. The offical stops were well chosen, especially in Montepulciano. I'm sure all the drivers are good, but I would certainly ask for Khan again, if available. So helpful and friendly.

Wonderful scenic tour. Thoroughly enjoyed the Tuscan countryside. Enjoyed the winery! Nice to be in a small group throughout the day, gives more individual attention. Just one of the stops had a very steep climb to meet the Guide. Just needed more of a warning about the steepness for people who may have health conditions that a climb like this can affect.

The guide/driver was fantastic! Really genuine person, very dedicated to providing a pleasant trip. He took us to a couple hilltop towns, and recommended the best way to spend our time. This tour was a great value and a very enjoyable day-trip!

I would recommend this day trip to all who would love the wine County. We enjoyed our guide who was with us all the time and gave great instruction were to meet up and about the area we were driving through. Fantastic trip!!!

Viator outsources tours which most time is ok. In this case we have to recommend not using this tour company or guide. This experience was nothing short of horrific. What should have been a VIP small group turned to a nightmare. We were a party of 5, there was another couple and our last pick up was one person. We waited 30 minutes for the one person they could not locate. They then figured out he boarded the wrong bus tour to the Amalfi Coast. Instead of making arrangements for the one person to be refunded or just stay in the tour we drove 40 minutes the wrong was to a rest stop were they dropped this person at. Then 40 minutes back. The driver tried to make up time by speeding and driving out of control. Since we were traveling with kids this was especially inappropriate. He was in the phone the whole time yelling in Italian and no form of any narrative was giving on any locations. The stops were nice and the winery was a bright spot. Having said that our driver Kahn was rude, short and made the trip awkward. This was an awful experience and not up to Viator standards at all. We would never recommend this. The car used was WAY too small for 8 people and we had too very small folks with us if not we would have been on top of each other. Just awful...

We had a fantastic time on this tour! Beautiful countryside and the small towns are very cool. The driver picked us up right from the hotel without issue. He was very friendly and wanted to be sure we had a good time.
They could upgrade the van. Counting us and the driver, there were 9 people in the van, which was the capacity. Initially, we were up front, which was very tight. Luckily, we were with a family, so they could put two older children up front. Again, the driver noticed this and made the change without us having to say anything.
This time of year, many of the shops are not open. Still plenty to see and do though.

The trip was beautiful and informative. I would have liked more time with the wineries and learning about their grapes, types of wines they are known for, etc. A perfect getaway from Rome central and a very worthwhile adventure. Recommend.

I was picked up on time at my hotel in a very clean Mercedes minivan. I think our tour guide's name was Max and he was very nice, polite, knowledgeable and funny! We stopped at several beautiful places for pictures and visited 3 different villages. The vineyard we visited was so beautiful. We had a tour of the vineyard and then they served has a delicious lunch and we sampled 3 different delicious wines. The drive to Tuscany and all the places we visited is breathtaking! I had a wonderful time on this tour!

This was a great tour. We were picked up at the hotel we had spent a lot of on taxies, so this was a nice feature. Our guide was knowledgeable, funny and a great driver. There were 5 of us and he made everyone comfortable. The winery was a terrific experience. Tuscany is a beautiful area. The villages were also interesting. I would highly recommend this tour.
Dawn G, Sep 2015
We got to see a lot of different little town's in Tuscany. It was a beautiful tour, just wish we would have tried more wine!
Mark T, Sep 2015
Fantastic stops. Our driver was very informative. We had a wonderful day
James_W, Sep 2015
What a terrific day! Small group allow for meaningful interaction with the guide.
Daniel R, Sep 2015
A good tour, but the long van ride was crowded and our driver/guide was not very talkative. He did answer questions when asked but we would have appreciated more information as we didn't always know what questions to ask. The drive was fast, the trip was safe, and we loved every stop we made but would have liked more time in each of the old cities we visited.
John T, Aug 2015
Although the drive is long it was interesting and scenic. The wine tour was good though not the best I have been on. You get quite a lot of time on your own in the villages which is nice, although left to my own devices I would not have spent as long. Driver acted as guide - great sense of humor and made many interesting comments
Michelle B, Jun 2015
This tour was fantastic. Not only did we get to experience some wonderful wineries but experiencing the little villages. The scenery was breath taking. Our tour guide Max was so knowledgable about the regions. Tuscany is a must whilst visiting Rome
