Itinerary

Your pizza walking tour starts near Piazza Venezia, where you’ll meet your foodie guide and head to your first stop, a century-old, family-run bakery. Enjoy a piece of pizza by the slice—pizza al taglio—before continuing on foot to your next eatery.

As you walk, listen to your guide’s commentary about the history of pizza in Italy, including its origins in Naples and the differences across Italy’s many regions; Neapolitan pizza today is known for its doughy edges, while Rome’s version is a crispy, thin-crust style called scrocchiarella. You’ll arrive at a delicatessen to hear about various ingredients that go into pizza, like capricciosa (made with ham, mushrooms, olives and artichokes). Sample mozzarella cheese, cold meats and pickled veggies, and enjoy a refreshing chinotto, a citrusy soft drink.

Walk deeper into the neighborhood of Monti, stopping at a bakery to try pizza alla pala, which is pizza baked on flint rock rather than a tin surface. Then visit Rione Monti for a sample of Italian gelato before continuing your tour to the Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli.

End your tour at popular pizzeria known for its wood-oven specialties. Observe the bakers at work in the kitchen, and enjoy a slice accompanied by a beer. Your guide will say goodbye here, where you are free to stay on your own or continue exploring.

This is an excellent tour and Bob was a great guide. He shared great historical facts about pizza and history in Rome, and having the Colosseum as a part of this tour is smart. We skipped the line and he did an amazing job of teaching us the history.

We enjoyed the small group atmosphere only myself, my husband and another couple. Our tour guide was very friendly and informative. We got to walk around a neighbourhood of Rome that we did not plan on visiting. Come with an EMPTY stomach. My husband is a vegetarian and they were very accommodating. Our favourite was the deep fried Naples style pizza. Wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking.

Learned a lot and ate more than I thought. It seemed like we ate every 5 minutes. So delicious, and I am a picky eater.

We thought the tour guide was awesome! She threw in lots of info about roman culture that we wouldn't have learned otherwise. Also, the visit to see the St. Peter in Chains tour was a very nice addition to the pizza stops. We ended up becoming pizza experts thanks to her expertise, and we found her advise useful for choosing pizza and gelato for the duration of our trip.

Thoroughly enjoyed this particular tour. Our guide, Alessandra, was entertaining and informative, and shared her knowledge of the area very well. Don't have a big breakfast, as there is lots to eat in the way of pizza, pizza toppings and tasty desserts!

This was so much fun, we enjoyed every minute. The food was great and plentiful and it's a great way to see and hear about a cool Rome neighborhood and taste its best offerings. Lucilla Lucy was a great guide and made the experience very enjoyable. Lots and lots of walking, wear good shoes.

Yes yes and yes! Pizza in Rome? What more could you ask for. I specifically liked this tour because our guide took a through traditional pizza, the history of pizza, and the different kinds. But be prepared: it's a lot of food!

Very nice tour. We did a lot of pizza eating and got to see a different area of Rome that we probably would not have seen with out the tour. Our guide was very nice and informative. We took this tour three years ago and still talk about it. It was fun day.

Gerald M, Mar 2017
Our guide, Alessandra, was great. We toured the archaeological area of the Roman forums on the way to the pizza places, and she shared excellent historical information. We then essentially tasted the construction of a pizza from the crust up - tasting the crust first, then the possible toppings, then the final product. We also took the side trip to climb up to the Church of St. Peter in Chains, which we might otherwise have missed.

The tour was wonderful. The guide was very informative and the places she took us to had delicious food. Even the historical stops were very interesting and informative. Highly recommend the tour and tour guide, Allesandra, we believe was her name.

This tour exceeded my expectations. I knew it should be ok, but it was a thoughtful and interesting presentation. Plenty to eat, come hungry.

Danny_S, Jun 2016
This tour was spectacular. They use an inductive approach to pizza. First trying crust, then sauce, the ingredients, then finished pizzas of all kinds. At the end of it I knew so much more about the Italian approach to pizza, food, and culture. The tour gives you a nice tour of the Monti neighborhood but Alessandra gave us restaurant recommendations for all over. We had better meals because of this tour. The group size is small, we had 5 including us on our tour. Don't eat lunch before you go. You get a lot of pizza.

Great. Barbara was a super terrific guide. It was not only pizza tasting in in various restaurants but a very interesting site seeing event. We learned a lot about the area and our guide made it a very friendly group by having us introduce ourselves and where we were from. One of our best tours.

Malcolm S, Sep 2015
A fun tour with lots of food. Best not to have breakfast before the tour as there are five stops for pizza and ice cream and we're not talking bite size pieces either. Guide was very personable and knew her pizza! Small group size made for an intimate experience.

Especially good tour if you are traveling with kids! Our guide Marco was terrific - very engaging and engenertic. It was obvious that he loves his city and his job which made our experience even more enjoyable.

Joseph M, Jun 2015
We were looking for something different to do in Rome besides museums and monuments. We had 3 teenagers with us. This was a great 3 hours. We got a locals look and telling of the history of the Colosseum area, a guided walking tour of the Monti neighborhood, a look at how Romans look at Pizza, and samples of many kinds of pizza, drinks, toppings, topped off with a pizza and beer or soda lunch. We made one stop at the Basilica in the neighborhood. Had a great guide and we really enjoyed the tour. Would recommend to anyone who can handle the walking.
