Castel Sant’Angelo was such a fascinating place to explore, full of history, hidden passages, and incredible views over Rome from the top. Our guide shared brilliant stories about its past as a fortress, prison, and papal refuge, which really brought the castle to life. The mix of history and breathtaking scenery made this visit one of the highlights of our trip highly recommended! If you are visiting the Vatican one morning, I would pair it with a late afternoon tour (we did 1630) - if your feet can take it.

The Castel Sant'Angelo tour was absolutely captivating. From crossing the angel-lined Ponte Sant’Angelo to exploring the castle’s hidden chambers and papal apartments, every moment felt like stepping back in time. Our guide was fantastic—knowledgeable, engaging, and full of stories that brought centuries of Roman history to life.
The rooftop views overlooking the Tiber River and St. Peter’s Basilica were breathtaking. It’s incredible to think this structure evolved from a mausoleum to a fortress, prison, and papal refuge. This tour is a must for anyone who loves history, architecture, or simply wants to experience one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks in depth.

We had an outstanding time touring Castel Sant’Angelo with Alec as our tour guide! Tickets were easily purchased, would found our guide easily and all expectations were met/exceeded. Alec provided a fun and informative experience while answering all of our inquiries! He was knowledgeable in all things related to the site, its role in history, the significance of details found throughout … and so much more! Highly recommended City Walkers Tours, and especially Alec.

We had Oleg as our tour guide he is incredibly well informed and indeed hilarious. The tour was great and at the end you get at the top of the castle with the most amazing panoramic view of Rome. I’d definitely do it again in the future!

The Castel St. Angelo was certainly worth the visit, but our guide, Alec, was so very knowledgeable that he made the tour quite memorable. Without a doubt, the best tour guide we’ve had during our stay in Rome. He knew so much not only about the Castel, but also about Roman politics, the Vatican, the colosseum, papal history and the powerful families that established Italy. Just a wonderful tour.

The tour guide was very experienced and knew the castle history well. The audio headsets were great. The castle itself without the narrative would have been a letdown, as others passing us by missed out on a lot of the detail. The views from the top and the casual cafe with associated seating were classic relaxation in the hectic tourist background of the city. This trip was well worth the cost.

Tour guide was wonderful. She gave a rich history of what was built as a memorial and later became homes of two popes, a fort, and a jail. Great views of the Vatican and surrounding city. Highly recommend.

My husband and I had a wonderful tour with Alec. He was so informative and we learned so much more than if we had toured the castle by ourselves. Highly
Recommend!

Alec was a very informative and knowledgeable tour guide. We took this tour on our last day in Rome and it really helped our understanding of the history of Rome from the beginning to the fall to the start of Christianity. This is a must for all traveling to Rome

We are so very fortunate and thankful to have Silvia as our tour guide! First, I thought I had booked a small group tour, so it was a very pleasant surprise when we arrived at the entrance of Castel Sant’Angelo and saw her holding up a paper with my name on it. We were 10 mins early, so I thought we were going to wait for the other participants. Then Silvia told us we could already start if we want, as it was a private tour! A very fortunate turn of event for me and my mother. We loved how Silvia shared with us the immensely interesting history of the Hadrian, the castle and how it eventually changed from a tomb to a fortress to the pope’s residence — Silvia’s story narration feels so organic, as if we are listening to a family or a relative who is welcoming us to Rome and who would love for us to learn more about it and fall in love with the city she grew up in. The entire tour felt heartwarming as it was also educational; and, it was also very comfortably paced. There was enough time to take photos, separately listen to Silvia’s stories and to absorb and marvel at the things we were seeing inside the Castel. When she would point interesting features to us, she would remind us of details in case they are related to something we have previously seen (both inside the castle and in our other tours of Rome like The Vatican). So it never feels like an overload of information, because Silvia helps us piece together all our experiences and the various things we have seen in the castle plus other parts of Rome. The view at the top of Castel Sant’Angelo was the best, especially as evening set in and Rome was adorned with enchanting lights. We truly enjoyed our time walking around Castel Sant’Angelo with Silvia. Best of all, her knowledge of the city really feels like it comes from her personal experience of living in it, that she could also help me with my questions about points of interests other than Castel Sant’Angelo itself. Silvia is such a magnificent company that will make anyone appreciate Rome even more! I would be very happy (and lucky) should I have her as our tour guide again in our next visit! Thank you so very much Silvia, for the wonderful tour and more so, for making us feel very much at home and well taken care of by you! We hope to see you again soon and also try your delicious pasta dishes! :)

We had a private tour with Lorenzo from the Citywalkers group. Lorenzo personally contacted me before the start of the tour to make it really easy to find him. His English was very good and the tour was very informative and interesting. He was a great guide and I would recommend him to anyone for the Castel Sant’Angelo tour.
Andrea_M, Apr 2022
Lorenzo was vwry nice and taught us many interesring things abour the castle. He was very polite and answered all the quesrions we had

The castle was amazing.
It has beautiful art, history, prison cells, weapons, amazing views of Rome. It turned out that we were the only couple on the tour. They changed the time-but emailed us and asked if it was ok before and it worked out for us. Our guide hadn't been to the castle since COVID and was a relatively new guide, so he did not quite know where he was going, since they changed the traffic flow, but he did a good job and spent a lot more than 2 hours on the tour.
