Itinerary
Your day trip from Rome to Orvieto and Assisi starts as you leave the city by coach, heading north along the River Tiber toward the region of Umbria, a picturesque piece of central Italy that neighbors Tuscany. After an approximate 1.5-hour drive, arrive in Orvieto, a hill town that seems to rise dramatically out of the volcanic rock it’s perched on and is known for its long history dating back to the Etruscans.
Explore town on foot, enjoying the Italian charm and passing by many churches, particularly Orvieto Cathedral, a Gothic structure that dates back to the late 1200s and is noted for its stained glass, sculptures and mosaics.
Back on your coach, continue across the rolling landscapes toward Lake Trasimeno, where you’ll stop for lunch. Then head to Assisi, a World Heritage–listed town famed for being the birthplace of St Francis of Assisi, a patron saint of Italy and one of the most legendary figures in religious history.
Take a walking tour of town to see sites related to St Francis’ life, including the stall where he is thought to have been born, his former home and the place where he vowed to dedicate his life to the church. You’ll also learn about Assisi’s other hometown saint, St Clare, one of St Francis’ followers. Visit both the Convent of Santa Chiara, named for her, and the Basilica di San Francesco, dedicated to St Francis, plus see other Assisi sights like Piazza del Comune, Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the town hall and the Roman Temple of Minerva.
Return to your coach to start the drive from Assisi to Rome, stopping on the way in Santa Maria degli Angeli to visit its 9th-century basilica where St Francis is said to have worshipped. Your day trip ends when you arrive back in Rome.

The best day trip excursion by far! The town's are absolutely beautiful. The guide was patient with my Mom, as she is older and it took her longer to walk (she did keep up). The towns were quaint, the history rich and people in every town welcomed visitors. The local lunch was so delicious and we met some really great folks talking the tour with us as well. Orvieto had wonderful local artisan shops. Assisi was a very rich history and spiritual experience for me personally. The countryside is breathtaking. The tour is highly recommended, my Mother and Sisters totally enjoyed this experience.

Nice bus ride to Assisi. Enjoyed the history, of this Medievil town and the journey of St. Francis. Very knowledgeable tour guide .
14th-centurv Orvieto Cathedral very interesting as well.
Karen_F, Apr 2026
This is a very long trip. It took 12+ hours. That is not to say the trip was bad. One thing to mention is that there is no admission included for the Cathedral at Orvieto. That is not mention in the advertising. It’s not hard to get online or in person ticket and a guide but it would be good to know up front. We did get there early before the crowds which was nice. After Orvieto we stopped at a lunch stop that was pretty bad. Need to improve that. Assisi was fantastic and the guide was excellent! Overall the trip was worth it and seeing both cities and getting a great guide at Assisi was terrific.

A more detailed itinerary should be published beforehand for the traveler. It wasn't what I expected

Very good guides and bus driver. Eduardo, the bus guide was knowledgeable and pleasant. The bus driver got us there and back with no issues. The local guide in Assisi was quite thorough. Assisi and Orvieto are definitely worth visiting. I would use Green Line again.

Despite not being able to go into the St Francis basilica due to his remains being there…. And not having tickets up front to see St Francis or the Basilica…. Still had a wonderful and amazing visit! Views were stunning in March, despite a quick rain full…. In which we were able to easily run into a shop and by an umbrella at a very reasonable price! Loved going up the tall clock tower and seeing views which went on for a few miles. Cobblestone all over the place along with older homes adorned outside as well by short stairs, added to the beauty of the town. Don’t miss it!! Assisi has a lot to offer!

A wonderful experience with a well educated guide and driver. Informative, friendly and fun…Second time taking this tour this year. Bravo!

Churches and religious sites were incredible, but this tour is disastrously organized and the food was dire. Unfortunately the bus was also extremely overheated and reeked of cigarette smoke. This tour makes for a very long day, including going quite far out of the way to eat a small, bland lunch at a random roadside restaurant which no one enjoyed. Would be much better to give visitors more free time in one of the towns to eat lunch on their own. The Orvieto visit was nice because the town is quite small, but this schedule doesn't leave nearly enough time to see everything in Assisi. We visited over the holidays when the train schedules were quite limited, which is why we chose the tour. If at all possible, I definitely recommend driving or taking a train to visit these towns on your own time, which would be cheaper and make for a better experience.

Cristina, our tour guide was very personable, kind, and informative about Rome and Orvieto. I wish she would’ve been our guide at Assisi! Our guide in Assisi, Maria, was hard to understand with her heavy Spanish accent and many jokes we did not understand. Also, We did not get a thorough explanation of Assisi’s basilica so that was disappointing. In general, this tour lacked chronological information about assist’s life. And prior to booking and/or our departure, we should have been given a clear timeline of how day would unfold. 45 minutes to visit Orvieto and 45 minutes to visit Assisi was simply not enough time. Lunch was mediocre. No lunch options nor beverages included.
Oscar_M, Dec 2025
Eduardo our tour guide was friendly, professional, knowledgeable, answering all the group's questions and looking after everyone of us
At Assisi the tour person was just as fantastic as well, we're very happy we took the tour and on top of that we made friends during the tour
The experiemce is incredible just by being there and see St Carlo Acutis was worth the tour, being with St Francis was incredible

Beautiful scenery along the way to assi and excellent both tour guides and driver. It is worth to do in Rome and if you are especially religious this is the place you must go.
Thomas_K, Nov 2025
Not happy. Lunch was paltry and bland. No free time in Assisi and driver passed by our hotel and would not let us off.
Ade, Nov 2025
Cristina was very thorough on explaining everything all throughout our journey. Mauro was a very good, punctual and patient driver. Highly recommended.

Meet three Saints in one day. Beautiful town of Assisi that was badly damaged in an earthquake, and has been brought back to its full beauty. I am a 78 year-old male and though there was a lot of walking, I didn’t find it difficult.

Assisi is the best part of the trip. The town of Orvieto was nice, but it would have been convenient to have a map of the town - I never found the castle. The Italian market was a reminder of how Italians in small villages eat healthy and not processed. The meal at the restaurant was "okay", there could have been more to eat. I could have done without Orvieto and spent the whole day in Assisi.

The tour name "Assisi and Orvieto Guided Day Tour from Rome with lunch" is a misrepresentation. The tour should be called "Transportation from Rome to Orvieto and Assisi with short guided tour in Assisi with lunch"
At the bus the tour guide said we are going to Orvieto. That is all he never explained what Orvieto was, we passed many towns, he never gave any history (all other tours I have taken with Viator the guide always talked about the geography and the history). When we arrive to Orvieto he said this is Orvieto I will meet you here in 45 minutes if you want to enter the church you can buy the tickets. I asked him who would explain about the town and the church, and he said no, no, this is free time (viator guides always explain the places we go, they already have the tickets and they accompany us). Went back to the bus and the guide never said anything until we got to the restaurant. He said we are going to have lunch here. Then we drove to Assisi, again he did not say anything, we passed nice towns but he was just talking to the driver--Claudio, the guide, provided transportation, he did not provide any type of guide. When we got there we were suppose to have a guide for two hours to show us the churches, she was 1/2 late.
At the end of the tour we met the guide at the front door, I asked where the bathroom was and he said just go down the steps and I will meet you there, I never so him again, I think the meant a different set of steps. I knew we were meeting at 5.00pm for departure; my husband and I went to the plaza were we waited for the guide, we could not find him we went early to the bus stop were we arrived; the bus was not there; finally, with the help of a taxi driver we went to the train station and bought tickets back to Rome. To our surprise another couple from the same tour also lost the bus, similar circumstances. They explained that he told them to meet at the plaza but they never found him again. Is easy to get lost in these little towns with so many roads, but it is the responsibility of the guide to be clear what the meeting point is in case a person gets lost. The driver, Claudio. call me when I was boarding the train, I guess he asked for my phone, but it was too late. The other couple never heard from him.

We're sorry for your disappointment with this excursion, which is generally considered one of the best tours offered by our company. I checked with our operator and it seems our guide provided all the information and recommendations for Orvieto and Assisi.
In Orvieto, as stated on the website, we offer free time to visit, while in Assisi there is a guided tour.
The main problem is probably your disappointment, especially regarding your return train to Rome, because you didn't arrive at the meeting point in time in the afternoon, as indicated by our guide. She tried to contact you but was unsuccessful.

This tour was great. We visited the place where St. Claire and St Carlo Acutis are buried. We also visited the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.

Orvieto and Assisi. Two places that everyone should visit. Especially if you are Catholic. The towns were fabulous. Our guide was not particularly talkative. The tour was roughly 14 hours long and he only talked for maybe an hour. We had a different specialty guide in Assisi and she was wonderful. Overall it was a long day that was well worth the money.

The narrow streets of this city are beautiful and dangerous. Very pretty. Long bus ride from Rome. Tour guide hard to understand. Walked too fast.

Christina, our guide, led us through some of the most beautiful Italian countryside on our journey to Assisi. Could not fault the day. From the hot chocolate and views from Orvieto, the lunch in Tuscany and Assisi everything was perfect.
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Wow Thank you! we appreciate your kind review
have a good day!
Evelyn_E, Oct 2025
The tour group guide was too fast and didn't have any audio/headphones to give at the Orvieto tour so those that were far behind from the leader couldn't hear her instructions on where to meet and when, even her comments on the walking sites. She also did not have any consideration for elderly people who were slower than the rest of the group and needed to use the toilette more often than most, especially going uphill.
Jason_B, Oct 2025
Great time with truly amazing architecture! Our guide was wonderful. Orvieto is such a cool little town, full of little nooks and crannies.
Melissa_G, Oct 2025
We enjoyed our trip. Lunch was great. The guides were wonderful. Asissi and Orvieto were beautiful. Ideally we would have loved more time in each location but we did have enough time to enjoy each site. The memories and photos will be treasured forever. Again the driver and both tour guides truly made the experience unforgettable.

You will see more than the listed itinerary. You won’t be disappointed! Orvieto Duomo opens at 9:30 and we were first ones there. Walked from St. Clare’s church to St. Francis’ church and visited Carlo Acutis’ tomb as well. Lovely site for lunch.
