Whilst our tour guide and the archeologist were great, the day was quite underwhelming.
The itinerary says 2 hours at Pompeii, 1.5hrs of a guided tour and then ample time to explore after that at our own pace. But we left at the 1.5hr mark with no free time to explore. We only saw a very small portion of the site, many of the same things and we didn’t even get to see the amphitheatre or the arena which doesn’t make sense to me.
We also didn’t get the opportunity to stop off at the gift shop and buy a souvenir. My husband and I have decided to drive back and pay again to go in and wander around ourselves to see some of the important things mentioned about that I would have expected to see on the tour. We spent more time in Sorrento and having break stops then at Pompeii. Wouldn’t do this tour again.

Marco was an excellent guide. Long trip, but worth it. Thoroughly recommend. Sorento is beautiful and Pompeii was fascinating.
David_F, Nov 2025
It’s a nice way to see Sorrento and Pompeii in one day when staying in Rome. The Pompeii walking tour was very good.
X_T, Oct 2025
The French and English groups were on the same bus, so the guide repeated the same things in both languages.
There wasn't enough time for Sorrento and Pompeii. Especially for Pompeii. Pompeii is quite big and I think we saw very little there. This trip should last at least a couple of hours longer.
It's a little too obvious that they don't really care whether you have a good experience or not. They just do their job and and overall it was OK.
Ann_M, Oct 2025
This trip was not what was described on the website. The organizers took so long getting us ready to go that we got less than an hour in Sorento. It was also the only opportunity we had for lunch so we basically took an expensive bus ride to Sorento to scarf down a lunch and had no time at all to see the beauty of the city. So disappointing. The website said we would have two hours in Sorento. Not even close!!
The guide was listless and uninteresting. He barely mentioned landmarks and gave absolutely no background or history on anything we saw. We chose an English speaking tour and ended up on a bus with mostly Spanish speaking tourists. English translations were an afterthought.
Our bus driver was literally on the phone the entire time he was driving. He would end one call and immediately start another. He used ear buds, but we got to listen to his one sided conversations the entire six hour bus ride. The most annoying and unsafe thing I have ever experienced.
The only saving grace of this trip was the visit to Pompeii. The archaeologist guide (not from the tour company) was interesting, knowledgeable and thorough. If it had not been for this leg of the trip, this trip would have gotten 0 stars. We will never take a viator tour again.
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Dear Ann,
we’re sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet your expectations, but from a certain perspective, we can understand why. However, we would like to clarify that the Sorrento and Pompeii Tour from Rome is a long and demanding journey, covering a 10–12 hour travel time from Rome to the south of Italy. As such, the schedule is quite tight.
The main highlight of the tour is the guided visit to the Pompeii Archaeological Area, which is vast. As a result, the local guide focuses on the most important sites. We assume that your guide didn’t consider the casts to be a key part of the story to share.
Regarding the tour leader, their role is to provide assistance and ensure the itinerary runs on time. They are not permitted to offer historical explanations, as Italian law restricts tour leaders from doing so.
That said, we will take note of your feedback and forward it to our Product Department for review of the Sorrento leg of the tour. We’re confident they will work to enhance the experience there.
If your want to further discuss your experience, you can send an email to feedbackteam@graylinerome.it
Best regards,
Gray Line Rome

One of the easiest and nicest trips . Very educational and well organized. Loved everything , starting from the bus to the rest stop, to the sorrento stops such. As the lemoncella factory, dinner back onto the amalfia coast to pompei and mt vesuvius. Wonderful guides , very educational. Loved
Mary_B, Sep 2025
Pompeii was interesting. The only thing that was disappointing was there was a lot of traffic so our time in Sorrento was cut short. It was a lot of time on the bus for the amount of time off.
Valmiki_M, Sep 2025
I rarely write reviews, but this experience was so profoundly disappointing and misleading that I feel compelled to warn other travelers and hold the agency accountable. I purchased this tour as a gift for my partner and her father, expecting a memorable day between Rome, Sorrento, and Pompeii. Instead, it turned into a frustrating and upsetting ordeal that ruined what should have been a special occasion.
1) The Sorrento “Experience” (or better said, shopping trap)
The description promised “a 2-hour visit in Sorrento with Limoncello tasting & free time.” What actually happened could not be further from that promise.
The driver and guide were more focused on dropping off some people at their hotel and forcing the group to eat at a particular restaurant than on delivering the tour.
My family does not drink alcohol, so they politely declined the Limoncello tasting. Instead of being respected, they were pressured repeatedly to buy products in shops “recommended” by the tour.
The entire stop was limited to a commercial shopping area, with no cultural or scenic highlights of Sorrento. There was no true sightseeing, just aggressive sales pressure.
What should have been free time to explore a beautiful coastal town turned into a pushy shopping scheme.
This was misleading, disrespectful, and frankly, a scam disguised as a tour stop.
2) Pompeii — a rushed and incomplete shadow of what was promised
The highlight of this tour was supposed to be Pompeii: “A guided 2-hour visit with skip-the-line access, expert explanations, and time to explore key ruins at your own pace.” What actually happened was unacceptable.
Before even entering Pompeii, the group was taken to yet another store (this time a coral jewelry shop), where they were once again pressured to purchase expensive items. This wasted precious time.
Despite the tour including skip-the-line tickets, my family was left standing under the scorching sun (35°C / 95°F) for an extended period, uncertain if they would even be allowed to enter. The staff even told them they might not get in, which is outrageous given that tickets were supposedly pre-arranged.
When they finally entered, the guided tour lasted less than one hour — far from the two hours clearly advertised. The guide rushed through explanations, leaving no time for immersion or appreciation.
Fundamental landmarks such as the Forum of Pompeii and the Centaur statue were completely skipped. These are central elements of the site, and missing them is inexcusable.
There was no “ample time to explore at your own pace” as promised. Instead, it was a pressured, hurried experience that stripped away the wonder and historical depth of Pompeii.
This was not only disappointing, it was dishonest.
Overall Impression
This was marketed as a premium cultural experience, but in reality, it was a tourist trap filled with forced shopping stops, broken promises, and poor organization. Instead of providing historical insight, respect for travelers’ time, and access to iconic sites, it delivered frustration, wasted hours, and blatant disregard for customer satisfaction.
I am deeply disappointed — not only because the experience was ruined, but because I trusted Viator to deliver what they sold. This was a gift for family, meant to create a beautiful memory, and instead it became a source of stress and regret.
Final Warning
Travelers, beware. Do not book this tour. You will not get what is promised. Instead of seeing Sorrento and Pompeii properly, you will be dragged into shops, pressured to buy overpriced goods, and rushed through one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
Viator and its partners must take responsibility for this kind of unethical practice. If tours like this continue, it damages not only the company’s reputation but also the trust of every traveler who expects authenticity and professionalism.
Avoid this tour at all costs. Spend your money elsewhere, and give yourself the chance to truly experience Sorrento and Pompeii as they deserve.
Frank_B, Sep 2025
Putting a trip to two beautiful places in a short period of time is as insane as going through a fast food drive-through you have a Michelin star dinner experience.
Be aware that the trip to Sorrento portion of this experience is nothing more than a quick pass-through. we were late arriving into Sorrento and instead of allowing us the two hours mentioned in the brochure we basically got off the bus, walked 5-8 minutes to the center of town, which meant walking back those same 5-8 minutes in a very short 71 minutes of time we're supposed to see this beautiful city, grab a lunch, do a little shopping and return to the bus.. In my opinion, it would be better for you to take the train from Rome to Sorrento, a quick trip, and use a tour book to maneuver around Sorrento.
This was my first experience with Viator Tours. I went on the recommendation of several friends who travel the world and have had seemingly great experiences. I did not and it will be my last with them.
When I questioned the guide about the "rushed experience" in Sorrento the tour guide used the excuse of unknown circumstances, including heavy traffic as an excuse literally making it my problem and not theirs to deal with. The exact same thing happened at the end of the Pompeii experience, making the experience once again feel rushed. The actual Pompeii tour experience was a beautiful tour of the Pompeii ruins so I probably should have given this to a two star rating.
After spending nearly 2 hours, trying to contact someone from the tour company and finally reaching a person, I requested a partial refund for the Sorrento part of the trip. In the end, I was refunded 10% of what I paid so apparently the people on the other end of the phone did not understand or did not care about how horrible that half of the trip was.
I feel badly for the other tourists on this tour who are all talking about the same thing yet I'm sure that none of them took the time to their opinions outside of their circle of family and friends.
The entire experience was negative and very rushed, and disappointedly I would not use this company again. If you are looking for kind, caring customer service, you probably should look elsewhere.
And, by the way, that free limoncello experience was nothing more than a hoax. In fact, during the few minutes I spend in Sorrento, I enjoyed a limoncello tasting with proprietor, who told beautiful stories of her family business making a trip somewhat worth it.
Response from Host, Sep 2025
Dear Frank,
we truly regret that your experience with our Sorrento & Pompeii Day Trip from Rome did not meet your expectations. Our Customer Service team followed your case very closely — by phone, chat, and email — offering apologies and processing a partial refund as a goodwill gesture in recognition of your disappointment.
As mentioned during our exchanges, full-day tours from Rome to southern Italy operate on a very strict schedule because of the long distances involved. We understand that this can sometimes feel rushed, and unfortunately, unexpected events such as heavy traffic or other minor force-majeure issues may reduce the time available in each location. In such cases, the tour leader is required to make difficult choices to keep the program on track and ensure the Pompeii visit, which is the highlight of the day, is not compromised.
We appreciate that this affected your personal enjoyment of Sorrento and are sorry you felt the experience was not as advertised. Please rest assured that we are constantly reviewing operations and guest feedback to improve timing and logistics wherever possible.
Best regards,
Gray Line I Love Rome

Bus ride had two unnecessary sales stops that made travel time longer than it should have been. Things were pointed out but not explained. Bad restaurant recommendation in Sorrento. Too short a stay in Sorrento. Would rather skip the two sales stops and have more time there. Pompeii was amazing and we had ample time. Would have been nice to have a map with basic information about the site. Also would’ve liked to have gone to Pompeii first since it was a lot hotter later in the day than Sorrento and very little shade.
Response from Host, Aug 2025
Dear Joshua - thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We take note of your suggestions and remarks, which are very valuable to improve our services.
Please kindly note that the journey is operated as an assisted tour and not a guided one (except for the Pompeii visit, which is conducted by a licensed local guide). Our tour assistants are not authorized to provide explanations or historical information, but only to assist travelers during the trip, as otherwise they would incur a fine.
We are nonetheless grateful for your comments regarding the stops, timing, and suggestions about Sorrento and Pompeii, and we will certainly take them into consideration for future improvements.
Best regards,
Gray Line Rome

We had a wonderful day trip with Carrina Tours. Marcelo, Bruno and Iliana were excellent tour guides who are very knowledgeable about Sorrento and Pompeii and general Italian history. We learned a lot and some of it was very eye opening. The bus itself was very comfortable and VERY punctual. We would recommend this experience to anyone looking to explore Rome, Pompeii and the Italian coast. Such a beautiful experience!

The tour operator did not give clear meeting place information and we ended up missing the bus Extremely unhappy
Jennifer_M, May 2025
Our tour guide, Mikala, seemed very knowledgeable. When we arrived at Pompeii, we were handed off to Eliana for the on-site tour. We had a small group with us, but she walked way too fast. Most of the people in the group had a hard time keeping up with her. We continuously keep getting separated and she seemed annoyed that she had to wait for people to catch up. Especially with the uneven stones and walkways, this was frustrating that she went so fast. We were glad to get some information from her but it was not worth what we spent on it.
Response from Host, May 2025
We’re sorry to hear that the pace of the Pompeii tour felt too rushed. Eliana is a passionate guide, and we believe she wanted to share as much as possible about this incredible site within the limited time available. That said, we truly value your feedback and will make sure to pass it along to her to help improve the experience for future guests.
We’re glad you found Michela knowledgeable and appreciate your comments—they help us refine our tours to better meet our guests’ expectations.
Best regards,

Martha was excellent. Very knowledgeable and coordinated. The tour started a bit late and then we had to wait for stragglers. The time was changed to 1/2 hour earlier and apparently some people didn’t receive the text. The only other thing was it was so incredibly crowded. That’s not the tour companies fault, but it was rather unpleasant being squeezed in like sardines. Would recommend.
Response from Host, Apr 2025
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback!
We’re glad to hear that Martha made a strong impression—her knowledge and coordination are key to making these full-day tours smooth and enriching, and we’ll be sure to pass your kind words along to her.
We appreciate you mentioning the delay and the miscommunication about the updated departure time. That’s something we’ll definitely review on our end to help avoid confusion in the future. As for the crowds, you're right—while they're beyond our control, we understand how they can affect the overall experience, especially in such popular destinations.
Thank you again for your recommendation—it means a lot. We’d love to have you join us on another journey through Italy with Gray Line Rome - Carrani Tours!

Sasha is a wonderful tour guide and human being. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. He even rode the train with us to Sorrento since we decided to stay there. Everyone knows Sasha and that’s because his reputation is very well deserved. We already miss him and hope someday we will be lucky enough to see him again. The bus ride from Rome to Sorrento was very good. Gugliemo speaks 4 languages perfectly and is an excellent host! We enjoyed our time with him as well.
Little things that were just ok.. when they picked is up in Rome it was raining. Would have been nice for pickup to be covered and also for bus to move closer to us. We had to walk a lot in the cold rain then when we boarded the bus moved up :-)… Another small thing was the audio in Pompeii was difficult to hear due to technical difficulties. We kind of fixed it mid way but Sasha deserves better audio to tell his magnificent stories.
Everything else was great!
GudjonAgust_S, Feb 2025
Very good organised, good lunch, guide in bus and in Pompeii was very good, guide in Pompeii had history and all 100%
deena_i, Feb 2025
Fabiano and Francesca were both wonderful and made the tour worthwhile. However, the initial jewelry store stop was a money grab. It was irrelevant to Pompeii, and I would have either preferred to sleep an extra hour or visited the ruins. Don't fall for it.
The pizza was good, but it was a meeting space at a nearby hotel and I wasn't permitted to sit with my family bc they had specific table arrangements. So the food was good and also nice to be included, but not necessarily something I'd recommend to seek out.
That said, taking a guided tour of Pompeii was well worth the time and money. The bus ride was nice, with a stop along the way at a lovely hotel coffee/tourist spot. All in all, the time was well planned and we are happy with what we paid for.
Tracy_M, Jan 2025
Very worthwhile. Our coach guide, Francesca, was terrific. Our site guide, Fabiano, was also a gem. Very knowledgeable. Lunch was great! One important note: the site visit begins with an unnecessary stop at a cameo artisan “museum”. Very expensive pieces. A obvious money grab. No one in our group bought a thing and it added almost a hour to the trip. While this is a pricey tour, it is worth it. You travel in comfort with experts. This is an all day event, so don’t count on doing anything else!
james_p, Jan 2025
We knew the tour was 12 hours but you could skip the jewelry making factory was a waste of time .We felt like there was a lot of wasted time . We were picked up in the morning at our hotel which was great. But it was not available at the end of tour . You have to let people know this ahead of time .
Response from Host, Apr 2025
Dear James - we’re glad you appreciated the hotel pickup, but we understand that some aspects of the tour didn’t meet your expectations. We aim to balance sightseeing with additional experiences, though we’ll take your comments into account to ensure that all stops feel worthwhile. As for the drop-off, we apologize if this wasn’t clear in advance and will work on making this information more transparent. We appreciate your insights and hope you had a wonderful time exploring Italy!

We got what we expected. The tour by a very knowledgeable guide Fabiano was excellent, though at first we underestimated him a little. Being an archaeologist himself Fabiano told us not only amusing facts about Pompeii, but also a brief history of the city, eruption and excavations.
The tour was organized well enough, though we'd rather stay more time in the city instead of spending half an hour in the cameo showroom next to the entrance.
Karen_L, Jan 2025
Overall the Pompeii trip is amazing. If you signed up to have a throuough experience of Pompeii, this is a good choice.
The day starts at around 6:40am for us. If you are staying within the Aurelian wall, they'll have a car picking you up and drop you off at the meeting point. At this point, I would like to have an extra confirmation when is our driver coming because they can be a bit late (understandable).
The bus ride is from Rome to Pompeii is overall nice. The guide, Ricardo, is nice enough to let us sleep for the first half of the trip because it was a bit early. Few complaints I have is, the stop is a bit underwhelmimg with one store and not really good breakfast per Italian standards. Ricardo is a bit adamant on making everyone leave the bus even though we are still sleeping, and ask us to board the bus on a particular order, which does not make sense to me because the bus is filled anyways. Other than that, Ricardo is wonderful at explaining interesting landmarks in and out of Rome, Naples, and so on.
The highlight of the trip, is of course, the tour of Pompeii city. I forgot our guides name, so I'll refer to her as purple umbrella lady, who I believe is phenomenal. She has an extremely depth of both archeological and historical knowledge about the city, knowing what to go and what to watch out for. The way she communicate is both comprehensive and engaging. From the gladiators, to arena, from the wealthy, to city life, you can envision yourself in Pompeii 2000 years ago before the great eruption. It is both an nostalgic and eye-opening experience, especially if you are a roman history nerd.
I don't like the lunch. While pizza is nice, carbonara feels like it's made by a restaurant in America and tiramisu and salad is too wet.
priyanka_t, Dec 2024
Wonderful experience exploring the ancient city of Pompeii with an Archeologist as a guide .
The trip is well organised and the bus to Pompeii is smooth with a break in the middle of the journey for refreshments which breaks the journey up .
It’s difficult to explore the entire stretch of Pompeii in 3 hours but we see the main highlights which is the icing on the cake . I enjoyed the trip .
Thank you so much for the lovely experience .
Kelly_J, Dec 2024
This tour was a great way to easily see Pompeii while on a visit to Rome. It was very easy to get to the bus pickup from the Termini area and the coach was very comfortable for the 3 hours there and back. Micaela and Juliana were our tour guides (bus tour/ruins) and they were both fantastic! Like many other reviewers mention, Pompeii is huge so don't expect to be able to see the entire archeological site with this tour but you will get the key highlights, learn a ton, and have a little time to explore on your own. Another thing to note, my father has some knee troubles and the ruins are, well, ruins. There are large stairs and uneven pathways you will be taking so keep that in mind and be prepared!
Edward_M, Nov 2024
Just the experience of reliving ancient history . Our guide Sasha was
Phenomenal with his knowledge, humor, and knowledge.
Arzu_K, Nov 2024
Our guide Sasha was great. We didn’t understand why we had to leave so early (7:30) and have a long breakfast break and then 2 hours later a lunch break (bad meal) and start the tour at about 1 pm. and head back about 4pm. Waste of time.
9g2yht4b5x, Nov 2024
The guide was so knowledgeable and made the experience worthwhile.
Seeing the ruins was extremely poignant
Marcus_K, Nov 2024
Really good trip to Pompeii. Very knowledgeable guides both on the buss and in the ruins. There was two bad things that can be easily fixed. The place chosen for our lunch was really bad. Very little taste and small portions.
We also visited a jewellery workshop outside the ruins. I would much rather have that time in the ruins instead. We had a very good two hour guided tour in the ruins and 45 minutes on our own. I could easily have spent a whole day in there by myself, and every extra minute would have helped. I had to walk really fast to the other end to see the Amphitheatre and rush to make it back in time.
