Overview

Covering Civita di Bagnoregio, Montepulciano, and Orvieto in a single day from Rome requires a driving route across three regions that's difficult to coordinate independently. This group tour connects all three, with a guided visit to Civita di Bagnoregio, a farmhouse lunch paired with a Brunello di Montalcino wine tasting in Montepulciano, and a visit to Orvieto's Duomo and underground sites.
  • Discover authentic Italian food and wine, without the research or guesswork
  • Indulge in a gourmet three-course lunch at a Tuscan farmhouse
  • Relax as you ride through the countryside in an air-conditioned coach
  • Enjoy the freedom to explore each location at your own pace

Itinerary

Your day starts at Piazza del Popolo, where you board an air-conditioned coach for the drive north from Rome to Civita di Bagnoregio—a medieval hilltop village perched on a plateau of volcanic rock. Getting here independently is a challenge, with no direct public transit to the bridge entrance, so having transport sorted in advance saves considerable hassle.

Cross the footbridge into the village and spend about two hours exploring its narrow streets, Etruscan caves, and enjoy panoramic views across the surrounding valleys.

From there, the coach continues into Tuscany for a three-course lunch and tasting of five wines—among them a Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy's most prized reds—at a farmhouse and vineyard in the Montepulciano area.

The tour then heads to Orvieto for roughly two hours of free time. Built atop a sheer cliff of volcanic tufa, the town is home to a striking Gothic cathedral and a network of underground tunnels and caves beneath the streets.

Finish the day back in Rome.

Sarah was an excellent guide!!! Be prepared for lots of steps but it is definitely worth the trip😎. Wine tasting was excellent 🍷

A wonderful taste of Italian life

Peter_H, Jun 2026
My wife and I decided to break up our week in Rome with this wonderful guided excursion into Umbria and Tuscany. From the early morning start in Piazza del Popolo until our mid-evening return every minute was well spent. Our tour guide, Giulio, was exceptional, giving us a history lesson on Rome, Umbria, Tuscany and the cities we visited, Ovieto and Civita di Bagnoregio (where it's said that Harry Styles has a remote home). For good measure, Giulio also expertly informed us about local Italian wines and foods. All the while, he answered many questions and amused everyone with his sense of humour. At lunchtime, we enjoyed a traditional sit down meal and wine-tasting session with our fellow day-trippers. Everyone enjoyed the experience immensely and I can't recommend it enough. To put the icing on the cake, the whole day cost less for my wife and myself than a meal we had the night before. It was incredible value and you really should generously tip your guide and the coach driver. We're looking forward to arranging another excursion next time we visit Rome.

Orvieto, Lunch and Civita

Natasha_M, Jun 2026
The day overall was fun but long. Orvieto is a great little hill town and going atop the tower for the view was amazing. This is not a guided tour but a bus tour with some guidance. Lunch stop food was ok. Civita was the highlight! An amazing location. The walk to and from is long so be prepared but once there just a great place to see.

Pari was an excellent guide. Both stops were pleasantly quieter than prior Italy excursions. Highly recommend both tour and guide.

Disappointing winery tour in Tuscany

Tony_C, Jun 2026
We enjoyed the two small towns we visited, but were disappointed in the winery tour as all we saw were the barrels in the basement.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Dear Tony_C, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us! We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed visiting the two small towns on your itinerary. We are sorry to hear that the winery tour did not quite live up to your expectations. While many traditional wine cellar visits focus primarily on the barrel rooms where the aging process happens, we completely understand wishing for a more comprehensive look at the facilities. We truly appreciate your honesty and will share this note with the winery to help improve the experience for future guests.

Lunch in Tuscany.

A Day in the Italian countryside

William_R, Jun 2026
It’s a long day do bring snacks & water.Bagnoregio & Orvieto were awesome and definitely worth visiting. The wine tasting was with a very large group and not personal at all. I’ve been to much better wine tastings with small groups. Our guide Gulia was awesome…she had a lot of energy and was very informative and personable.

3 cities in one day!

Katina_D, Jun 2026
Pari was a great tour guide. She was very informative about the places that we were going. Francesco was our driver and did an excellent job of navigating the crazy traffic. I wish we would have had a little more time at "temptation island ". There was so much to try! We saw beautiful architecture and landscapes. The walk up to the dying city was brutal but it was beautiful. We enjoyed the trip.

Great day trip from Rome and exceptional value

Brian_S, Jun 2026
Experience was well worth the money. Our guide (Lorenzo) was friendly and helpful and we enjoyed his presentation of the history of the areas we visited. He was very informative and knowledgeable of the areas as well as answering any other questions we had. We did not expect much from the included “lunch”. But it far exceeded our expectations. We would have gladly paid for the lunch experience on its own. This was by far the most value per experience that we experienced on our recent vacation.

Oreveto tour

It was an amazing tour. Our tour guide Leonardo was fantastic. He told us lots of really good information about the area and was very helpful. Made the trip very fun. We love the sites. They were just amazing. Highly recommend this tour.

Amazing Day Tour

David_W, May 2026
Outstanding tour! Our guide Chiara was extremely knowledgeable and explained, and just the right level of detail the history and culture related to our stops along the way. She was very knowledgeable and engaging. We loved all three stops, including the lunch and wine tasting. I highly recommend this tour!

AMAZING trip - must book!!!

Robyn_H, May 2026
Had such a WONDERFUL day trip to Orvieto, Civita di Bagnoregio, and a Tuscan family winery! Such a beautiful region and 100% a must-see if you are visiting Florence or Rome. Really special and lesser known medieval towns that provide spectacular views, great food, and great street markets! Our tour guide, Veronica, was funny, nice, and very knowledgable. The bus transportation all went smoothly as well! Would 100% book this trip again just to go back to these two cities.

Amazing villages AND wine tasting lunch!

Disappointed

Mary_B, May 2026
Pari, our tour guide, and Fausto, our bus driver were wonderful. The tour itself left a lot to be desired. Orvieto was nice. The duomo was really the only thing to see. The shops were opening when we got there. Our Tuscany “gourmet” lunch was anything but, and the wine tasting was not informative at all. We were herded into a dining room, much like a cafeteria, where two wines were poured and waiting. The owner was hard to hear as there was another group next to us (only divided by a curtain), and they were talking while not being given the spiel. The only information we gleaned about the wine was that it is in barrels for 3 years, bottles for 2, so all wine is 5 years old before they sell it. Ok… 3 more wines were poured during the meal with the same “5 years old” information. The meat and cheese were good, the bruschetta was ok, the main course was mediocre. It was obvious this was a money maker for the winery and not a memory maker for the tourists. After we ate, we were told we had 15 minutes to get to the bus. The itinerary said “4 hours in Tuscany.” We were definitely not there 4 hours (maybe 1.5) and the only countryside we saw was from the bus. Civita di Bagnoregio was a HIKE! It was beautiful from afar but the majority of our two hours there was walking to and from the town. Everyone was ready to leave earlier than scheduled because there was little to do or see in the town. Of all our tours we’ve done in past years, this was our most disappointing and a waste of a day in Rome.

Response from Host, May 2026

HI Mary_B, Thank you for your detailed feedback. We’re very glad to hear the guide and driver made a positive impression. We’re sorry the tour itself didn’t meet expectations, particularly the lunch, wine tasting, and time spent in Tuscany and Civita di Bagnoregio. Your comments about pacing, organization, and overall value are noted and will be shared with our team as we work to improve the experience. We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

Civita di Bagnoregio was breathtaking and worth the trip

Victoria_H, Apr 2026
Natasha was a fantastic guide! She was very nice, a wealth of information and she helped make it a memorable day. The highlight was 100% Civita di Bagnoregio, it was magical! I wanted to go to the city on my own but it was too difficult to navigate with public transportation, I’m glad I did the tour because I also got to see Orvieto. The lunch at the farmhouse was okay, I would have preferred time in Montepulciano instead of the lunch if that was an option.

Beyond expectations!

Melahi_P, Apr 2026
Chiara, the guide, went beyond expectations, highly informative! Three regions in 1 day! Enough time to explore.

Nice historic tour

ASUNCION_R, Apr 2026
Chiara is a really nice guide, she knows a lot about the places and Italian history, she Will make you laugh! This tour mixes walking with the guide plus going by yourself if you want to go around, so You have time to learn and visit everything place!

Christine_W, Apr 2026
Bagnoregio is an absolutely amazing experience. Unlike anything else I have experienced. Orvieto is also a beautiful old town with a gorgeous cathedral and tower to climb and have spectacular views. The wine tasting would be the only thing I would change about this trip. Drive a decent distance for it, would rather eat local to the Umbrian towns and have more time in each place.

Brilliant tour

Lilia_C, Mar 2026
I’m extremely happy with this tour! The small town of Orvieto was picturesque and so many nice shops and scenery. The lunch was amazing in the Tuscan winery with a great host. The Bagnoregio town was charming and so beautiful. The tour was truly my favorite. Chiara our tour guide was so great and I loved all her stories!

This was probably the best trip we took in Italy. There was so much to see and do in one day. Walking thru all the cute villages and Eating and drinking wing at an authentic tuscan farm.

Excellent tour but resist any purchases from winery

Kelly_S, Mar 2026
Excellent on all accounts…except for the winery we stopped at. Our tour guide was a 10 out of 10 and so were the stops! Comfortable bus. Lots of walking but stunning views. The reason for the 3 stars is because of the winery we stopped at. It was charming, family owned and decent lunch. The wines were OK. At the end we stopped to buy a bottle of wine, balsamic vinegar and 2 small local honeys. Only the honey’s had a price tag of 15 euro. Imagine her surprised when the total bill came to 214 euro! Mine was over €120 and the balsamic vinegar (small bottle) was 90 euro!! the same bottle of wine goes online for $30. I don’t understand why they felt the need to overcharge like that. Totally ruined the experience and really felt taken advantage of.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Hi Kelly, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed the tour, especially the guide, the beautiful stops, and the comfortable transportation. Bagnoregio and Orvieto truly are stunning destinations, and we're glad these parts of the experience stood out. We also appreciate you bringing your winery experience to our attention, we will certainly share your comments with them. Thank you again for joining the tour and for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Absolutely Incredible

Deborah_L, Mar 2026
Love, love, love this tour! Sara, our tour guide, and Paulo, our driver, did an excellent job of getting us to the cities and providing interesting anecdotes along the way. Good variety of tour group time, on your own time, and breaks in between for shopping, lunch, wine tasting. Sara is a treasure trove of knowledge that is combined with humor to make the day perfect!

What a fabulous day!! So many beautiful site! We took so many pictures and I can’t stop talking about your tour. Thank you for a great experience!

Disappointed

Candace_M, Jan 2026
Cool stops. But rushed and sell sell sell to the tourists.. wine/lunch fast, no real tour, sips of wine w no information Every stop cut short. Returned early to Rome.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Hi Candace_M, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed the stops, but we’re sorry to hear that the pace of the day felt rushed and that the wine and lunch experience didn’t meet your expectations. Our goal is always to balance seeing multiple highlights with providing meaningful time and context at each location, and we regret that this was not your perceived experience. Your comments about the tastings and overall pacing are very helpful, and we’ll be reviewing them with our team to improve the experience for future guests.

Didn’t live up to expectations.

Beverly_K, Dec 2025
Promised to be marvellous but didn’t live up to expectation. Ovieto was lovely but we needed one and a half to 2 hours more. Lunch and wine tasting was tedious; several people asked for a glass or a bottle of wine with lunch but were refused. A short lunch break would be far better. Our guide, Fabrizio, and driver, Antonio were wonderful.

Response from Host, Dec 2025

Hi Beverly_K, Thank you for your feedback. We’re happy to hear you enjoyed Orvieto and that Fabrizio and Antonio made the day enjoyable. We’re sorry the time in Orvieto and the lunch experience didn’t meet expectations, especially regarding wine availability. We’ll review these points with our partners to improve the experience. We appreciate your comments and hope to welcome you again.

Do this tour for ancient hilltop towns!

Stanley_W, Nov 2025
This is a great excursion. The bus is comfy but the drive is long. It is a great way to see both Oriveto and Bagnoreggio, two amazing hilltop towns, in one day. Orvieto’s Christmas Markets are in full swobg. Be prepared to walk a bit!

Jennifer_B, Nov 2025
The towns we visited were nice, but we weren’t overly impressed with the lunch or the stop at a giant touristy shopping store. The guide was not very helpful - don’t expect any kind of tour around the towns or anything, just about 60-90 minutes of free time to wander around.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Hello Jennifer_B We’re very sorry to hear that the experience did not fully meet your expectations. We understand how disappointing it can be when parts of a tour feel less enjoyable than hoped. This tour is designed exactly as described on the booking confirmation: guided transportation with free time in each town so guests can explore at their own pace, including time allotted for lunch and a brief stop along the route. We regret if this format didn’t align with what you were looking for or if it felt less guided than expected. Thank you for sharing your feedback — it helps us continue improving the experience for future guests. If there’s anything else we can assist you with, we’re here to help.

Don't miss this tour!

Becky_G, Nov 2025
A long day but so worth it! There is a fair amount of walking and steep hills to be prepared for. But I have done this tour twice, and would do it again! Lunch is fabulous! Don't miss this tour.
