Neil was great! He offered a fantastic look at the Civil Rights movement from Harlem’s perspective, and gave us a real sense of not only the history but the character and feel of the area. It was cold, so our tour asked if we could stop for coffee and hot chocolate. Ended up having a great bonus hang and chat right in the middle of the tour. Highly recommend!

Learned so much about Harlem’s history, including how it got its name from the Dutch. Saw places where Duke Ellington’s band played and Billie Holiday sang the blues. Saw the site of the famous ballroom where integrated crowds danced the Lindy Hop.

Call to make sure it’s actually going to happen. This tour was supposed to happen and no one notified me that it wasn’t going to happen after taking the subway and walking in heat and humid to get there.
Nancy_B, Apr 2025
The tour leader did not show up. I did hear later from someone
and have been told I will be refunded. We will see. The topic
of the tour - Civil Rights - is so important, and I was sorry to
miss it - just had to stand at the meeting place and wait then
leave without the valuable experience.

Mr Harlem is a terrific guide. He has deep understanding of the history and culture of Harlem. Don’t expect a typical dry guided tour experience. This man is a story teller.
Safiya_D, Feb 2025
Very informative, fun, and eye opening. The historical knowledge of our guide was top tier. 10/10 would recommend.
Chanel_W, Sep 2024
Neil was an amazing tour guide. He definitely knows his history. He’s very entertaining as well. We enjoyed Neil aka Mr. Harlem
Madeline_L, Aug 2024
Our guide Neal, aka Mr. Harlem, was both very entertaining and informative. If you are seeking an authentic Harlem experience and an understanding of what it means to be from Harlem, then this is the perfect tour. We all enjoyed this!

Everyone needs to do this tour to not only get a knowledgeable and personable guide but the rich history!!!
Ellen_S, Jun 2024
I’d say the fairly complete review and analysis of Harlem Civil Rights history, plus meeting an artist currently working on the enhancement of an upcoming event.
Susan_P, Mar 2024
The tour was cancelled but Neal narrated very well and was very knowledgeable even though he wasn’t our guide.
Jean_H, Feb 2024
Neal was so excited to share the history of Harlem. He personalized the tour for my daughter and me. It was an absolute highlight of our trip to NYC. Any student of modern American history or the civil rights movement must take this tour!

The tour was supposed to start at 1pm. The tour guide did not show up. A man who appeared to be unhoused (filthy, mismatched, unwashed clothes; unwashed appearance) arrived at 1:30pm and began talking to us (a group of 10 total) with no introduction, no verification. We did not feel safe. He began trying to lead us down the street but my date and I left. We could not verify if he was a legit tour guide. He had no badge; did not confirm our booking; did not introduce himself. We have no way of knowing who he was. I have requested a refund.

A fascinating walk through the neighbourhood. Lots of interesting and fascinating details covering various eras. Neil was an entertaining and insightful guide. Well worth taking this tour.

Lee was a wonderful tour leader. He was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his home, Harlem. We covered a lot of territory, each place had its own story. As a bonus, Lee introduced our group to some friends and local celebrities. We’re glad we took the tour.

DO NOT DO THIS!!! The tour guide failed to show up to the tour, no one is answering my emails, inquiries or phone calls, and I have not been issued a refund.
Marina_C, Aug 2023
This didn’t happen and I want my money back since the guy not showed up at the place. I came from other country and I can’t do in na different day and the place don’t answer me anymore.

Neil showed me around the neighbourhood and explained the history. The buildings are amazing, not dissimilar to Notting Hill. Beautiful wide streets.

Cara_T, Mar 2023
Fantastic tour from Neil. As a local, he is passionate about keeping the history alive but also keeping the civil rights going for present and future Harlem. He’s so invested in the culture of his community. It was an emotional and informative walking tour from the heart. Highly recommend.
Michelle_C, Oct 2022
Learning more about the history of Harlem and key figures from the perspective of the local community.
Claire_B, Sep 2022
Our guide Neil was a superb orator and brought the modern history of Harlem to life. His respect and joy for his home district was palpable and infectious. I and my travel chum thought it was the most interesting and fun activity we did whilst in New York. I would like to go back there and explore more
Catrice_G, Jul 2022
This was by far the worst tour I have ever been on. There was no history given as stated in the overview. He said his office was closed and there was no films to watch. He took us to his mothers house?? During the tour, he stopped at a store saying he will be right back he had to go get something. Then, when it was FINALLY over at Apollo, he said this is the Apollo and the end of your tour. The absolute worst tour and the one tour I was looking forward to the most.
Claudia_B, Jun 2022
Neal’s personal knowledge and love of Harlem made this a not-to-miss experience. We learned so much beyond just history. Highly recommend this tour.
Michelle_P, Mar 2022
Neil was knowledgeable, informative, and personable. We started the tour with video clips. We then walked around and saw so much civil rights history. Neil is a walking historian. You can tell he is passionate about this topic. Absolutely recommend this tour. Great day and learned a lot.
Geraldine_G, Mar 2022
This was an excellent walking tour of Harlem and Neil was an outstanding guide, answering all our questions along the way. The tour began by showing the group film clips of Malcolm X and Adam Clayton Powell. We walked through the streets and Neil pointed out the important sites and discussed how the community is changing. He explained what gentrification meant to the residents of Harlem. We walked through an African market, a housing project and a Presbyterian Church. He pointed out the mosque in which Malcolm X preached and a number of synagogues that are now churches. Of course, no tour of Harlem would be complete without showing the group the Apollo Theater and Sylvia’s.
Robin_D, Feb 2022
The best walking tour I have ever been on. Neil is very knowledgeable and socially engaged. He is friendly, sincere and generous. He sees the bigger picture now and through time. Really appreciate the detail of his knowledge and how he weaves major historical events with his personal experiences and connections to Harlem. The tour is full of nuance and detail at just the right tempo.
Genevieve_L, Dec 2021
The video explanation part at the beginning was really interesting
The guide comments during the tour were limited and the city tour very short. The stop at the Apollo theater was made upon our request and the visit was only limited to the theater entrance
