Make your way to the View Hotel in Monument Valley Tribal Park 15 minutes prior to your scheduled tour time between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. (entrance fee not included). Meet your guide and your group for a prompt departure down the 17-mile (25 kilometer) Valley Loop Drive on this Viator Exclusive tour.
Listen to guided commentary about Monument Valley en route to its most famous landmarks, including stops at the so-called “John Ford’s Point” where many of John Wayne’s classic western movies were filmed, the Totem Pole, Yei Bi Cheii, and North Window, which offers views of the West and East Mittens. What an incredible experience with tour guide Steven.
We were considering driving ourselves but sitting on top of a comfortable open top 4 x 4 vehicle and letting someone else take care of the driving whilst you focus on the views is the best way to see the valley without a doubt. We made several stops throughout the tour to take photos and take in the views but you also have great views from all seats on the vehicle whilst on the move.
What really made the day special was our Navajo tour guide Steven who pointed out some of the interesting features of the rocks that we would never have noticed ourselves and gave us a fascinating mix of geological information and local legends. He shared some personal anecdotes with us about his own experiences growing up in the area which we loved to hear. He really made the experience special and we would like to thank him again for a fantastic afternoon adventure!

We had an excellent experience on the 1.5 hour tour with John. By the end of the tour, we were wishing we had booked the 2.5 hour tour, though the 1.5 hour tour was all we had time for in our itinerary. John was so informative about Navajo history, language, and stories and mythology, as well as helping with photos and providing an overall great experience. We would highly recommend this tour, and the 2.5 hour tour if you have the time. It is NOT worth it to drive the dirt road loop yourself, especially if you do not have AWD. Just the first portion alone will get your car stuck if you are too low to the ground.

The park was closed to cars because of a big rain storm. I'm so grateful we got to see by booking a tour.

Have your guide tell you the native stories about the Monuments
Due to flooding, we cannot go on our regular tour however, our guy took us on a fantastic tour of another area of the park. Tour guide was great and experience was fantastic.
Spending the night at the View Hotel gave us ample opportunity to admire the extraordinary views over Monument Valley. These powerful rocks are among the best views in my life! Exploring the canyon became a necessity. We loved the excursion which gave us access to other fabulous views over a near 17 mi circuit. A great addition was the guide and his many, detailed and clever explanations!

A dream come true. The scenery is absolutely amazing, and our driver, super nice, made the tour more meaningful with all the insight and knowledge of the place. Worth the price. Highly recommended! Five ⭐️ stars!
Be ready for a beautiful drive and a bumpy ride!
Our driver, Ty, a Navajo guide, drove with precision along the dirt trails. We made 3 stops for photographs and Ty gave us commentary about each formation.
This was one of the highlights of a two week plus tour of the Southwest. I had visited long ago but having a guided tour allowed us both to really see so much and learn a great deal about the area and about the Dineh people from our wonderful guide. The light was spectacular as the sun went down.
Our guide Elvis was really great. Explained to us about the Mesas, Buttes and offered to take pictures of ours. This was really one of our bucket list items. Loved this trip and would definitely recommend this to others too.
We had a fantastic experience. I highly recommend doing a guided tour compared to driving it yourself. The road is tough and while my suv would have survived it was very bumpy. Trevino was our guide and was amazing. He was kind and answered all of our questions. He provided insight into the monument valley formation names, history behind them, movie history, Navajo traditions, and photo tips. I would highly recommend doing this if you’re in the area.
This is the perfect option if you have a rental car and feel squeamish taking it on the bumpy, 17 mile dirt road loop. 1.5 hours was just right for us as we were passing through on our way to Durango and wanted a quick visit. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Cliff was very personable and responsive to our requests. This tour was reasonably priced.
Absolutely wonderful experience- our guide John was very friendly and knowledgeable- the tour was great, saw the major sites with stops for pictures, and John gave us insight into each as well as the general history of the area and of the Navajo culture and language. Definitely recommend!!
Our guide Steven gave us a great tour and a lot of interesting information that if we had driven in our own car wouldn’t have ever learned. We ended up on a private tour because we were the only 2 out of a possible 12! It’s pretty rough road so hold on tight.
The back country tour is worth seeing. The tour company good. It was great seeing where movies were made. And the history of the Navajo Nation.
Our tour guide Roz was fantastic.
Our guide Warren educated our group about the geology and history of Moument Valley on our 1.5 hour tour. He gave us his insights into Dine history and culture and how his ancestors occupied this region in pre-Columbian times. I believe he went out of his way to show us the most beautiful areas we could see on our short tour

Definitely, do the tour.It was very informative. It could be a little dusty at times. Bring a face mask.
Tour was more than anticipated. Von the guide was a joy, she knew all the history and great viewing stops. Be ready, it’s a bumpy ride.

Learned alot on this 1.5 hr tour. Would have liked the longer tour but we had other travel reservations.
Our tour guide Bob, was fantastic. He took a detour to the backcountry and showed us some beautiful sights not on the main tour. For the Italian couple in our group, he spoke a bit of Italian. The best part was when he paired up with another tour guide and performed some Navajo music for us.
This tour is in a minivan, not an open car. It was good for us… it was rather chilly that day. But that was not obvious from the listing
Request Stephen Holliday. He was great. We could tell he was very proud of his people the Navajo. We were able to ask question about the reservation and history and he answered with passion for his people. He made sure we saw everything. Hew was awesome.
Very personal! Tim Holiday didnt use a microphone and a speaker like we saw other guides do. It reminded me of a Universal Studios tour. Tim, instead, would stop the vehicle and come talk to us in an unassuming manner and answer our questions. So very appropriate and respectful of the environment. Ask for Tim! Also, even though I am a huge John Ford fan, I was impressed and gratified that the focus of the visitor center and the tour was on the Navajo culture and heritage and the relationship to the land, not the movies. Seeing the natural spectacle was everything. We went in placid cool February and understand that the route is bumper-to-bumper and 110 degrees in summer. So dodged a bullet there.
Steven did the tour for us. It was awesome. He is friendly and told us a lot of interesting facts. I would suggest doing 2 and half hours though as I feel we missed a few spots.
This was a great experience, came to know about the history and our guide Stephen was great, able to connect his personal life to the valley and explain in detail.
Our guide was wonderful! She drove us all over Monument Valley while telling us stories about the history of her people and the land itself. I'm so glad we didn't attempt to tour this park on our own without a guide!
The closed vehicle kept us warm and out of the flying dust. But it only had one exit door, so get out as often as possible and take lots of photos!
