Overview

Travis was great guide and host. We saw
great scenery as the sun was closing in on the horizon. It was neat to see the shadows lengthen with distant monuments reflecting the sun. Travis provided the history and his legacy as Navajo..

It was an incredibly moving, spiritual experience with Dark Sky, who led us through the back country (off limits except for this tour) and shared his personal stories about his clan, his family, his culture, and the land. It was a lesson in history, sociology, geology, religion, language, and world culture, spoken with genuine feeling. At one point, all four tours gathered at majestic Big Hogan and the guides treated us to music (flutes, drums), prayers, and chants. Dark Sky reminded us to be good to one another, and wanted me to tell you that you are all invited to join him in sacred Monument Valley. So please go, you will never forget it.

The main thing to take away from my experience is that I struggled with the information about WHERE the tour was boarding from. We arrived 5 mins before the tour began, and ended up spending that time running around the View Hotel, asking various employees where we should go, and they were unable to help us. We found the Gazebo At The Bottom Of The Hill 5 minutes after the tour had left. Ultimately, didn't get a chance to take the tour. Tour Guides offered to drive us out to meet the tour in the Valley or reschedule for sunrise, which we declined. Probably could have used some more clear instructions since there are so many tour operators in that parking lot.

Our sunset tour guide was Travis. We had a spectacular time. I do wish the truck had a microphone so that he could have described our surroundings as we drove, but once we got off the loop road and into the back country, we stopped many times, visited a hogan, heard Travis play beautifully on a native flute and a drum, saw petroglyphs, and heard his stories. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful sunset tour. Our tour guide, Dark Sky, was phenomenal. We were never rushed at any of our stops. He gave us a fantastic tour with a lot of interesting information, took pictures of us in some beautiful locations, and gave us a very authentic tour with his knowledge on petroglyphs and the Navajo culture.

We are so pleased we decided to book this sunset tour. We enjoyed the special treat of the beauty and culture that Travis, our tour guide, shared with us.
We experienced close up scenes and restricted area access, riding in the back of the 4 wheel tour truck. We experienced live music performances and heard stories about the Navajo people. It was on another level special.

This is the tour I would take if it was my first time visiting Monument Valley. This was our first visit and this was a fabulous introduction. The drive can be done in your own vehicle, but it's a really rough road. Better to be driven in a vehicle built to accomodate the bumps.
Also, you see much more on this tour than you can see on your own. Our guide was very informative and a good driver. We had some great places to take photos as the sun was coming down.

Guide was informative and helpful. In addition to a drive through the valley, the tour included stops to see a weaving demonstration and flute playing. Be prepared: even the sunset tour in early June was really HOT (90+ degrees).

Great tour - Nate did a great job with assessing the pace of the group and planning the stops accordingly. He stopped a few times to let us get out and take some photos, which was great. The tour seemed more sightseeing than informational, which worked out for us because it was such a big valley to explore and see. The open air vehicle went into parts of the property that were only available to tours. Nate was very pleasant and calm - he told us a few stories about his family history and the formations themselves, and also offered to take photos for us. I’d recommend this tour and Nate as a guide!

Nate was a great guide and the scenery was amazing. The open air vehicle was a terrific way to explore the valley but I would suggest people who have bad backs might rethink this adventure.

Incredible ride up close. My favorite part was when Nate and other guides played instruments and sang at Big Hogan. Nate was knowledgeable about the area, his culture and added humor made the tour! Highly recommend!

Guide gives lots of good information. Be prepared for a rough ride in a few spots. Wear a hat that won’t blow off and bring some water. Love every minute of the sunset tour.

Though I have been to Monument Valley many times over the past 30 years, several of which have been with Navajo guides, this one with Travis was, as we said back in the day, Mind Blowing. The pagentry of the monuments marching through time was brought to life for me this time as in no other visit. I felt the living sky and earth and wind through the notes of Travis' flute and observed a man, a truly blessed man, who demonstrates what it is to walk in beauty.
As we passed through beloved land, Travis' way of welcoming, his generosity in sharing his heritage knitted sense through the awareness of a troubled world and I entered into a deeper understanding of the oneness of all things, even people who strive to be distinct and above others, and this not in words as much as the deep acceptance of how to be in contrast to what we have learned of people's sickness of soul.
Afraid I'll get all sappy and sentimental sounding if I go on, I'll close with this. Now, after this trip through the valley, my heart is woven through with the glorious red dirt of healing.
For my new husband, Geoff Koetsch and I, it was a blessing on our late years' love and the wonder of life embraced.

Mom and i enjoyed the tour: Larry played the flute, beautiful. Then took our photo with the eagle in the rock. Very cool
(i do suggest a step stool that can be used for older touriest) i did have to help my mom who is 83 in and out of the truck.

I booked this tour with high expectations, based on the reviews from others & it did not disappoint! Nate was an amazing guide and shared information about his people and his culture in a thoughtful and meaningful way! Not only did we see beautiful scenery and hear about the Navajo culture - we got to hear traditional music through singing and flutes! And seeing Monument Valley at sunset was simply stunning! I do have a few things worth noting. My travel buddy is almost 80. She made the trip but had difficulty getting in and out of the truck because it was such a high step. I have short legs so it was a little bit of a challenge for me as well. I strongly suggest wearing tennis shoes. - you will be walking on uneven ground and even in sand. It’s also worth noting that it is a VERY bumpy ride because you are in the back country. I’ll reiterate - this was an EPIC tour and I loved every minute of it! But as someone who travels with an older companion, I know it’s helpful to know when there are potential challenges so you can plan. Highly recommend this tour if you are able to go!!

Our guide was great and we saw some great sights. But I was very disappointed that we didn't see a sunset. How can it be called a sunset tour if the tour ends before the sun sets?

This tour showcases the raw beauty of Monument Valley while providing an opportunity to learn a little about Navajo culture and beliefs. Our tour guide, Travis, was wonderful and provided a fun experience. You ride in elevated seats on a pickup bed and the ride is lively at times - so hang on tight. Travis took us to hidden treasures within the tribal park and always had a meaningful story for us. He played a two-chambered Native American flute while another guide played guitar; a highlight of the tour. We very much recommend this tour.

Absolutely magnificent behind the scenes tour of Monument Valley. Guided tour in the late afternoon and got back as the sun was setting. Spectacular rock formations and Travis was wonderful at relaying the Navajo history and traditions. Included very moving music at key locations. Highly recommend!

The Navaho tour guide was very knowledgeable of the various buttes and mesas. His father was a major contributor to the Rosa Stone language tutorial program on the Navaho language.

It is a very beautiful tour that takes you to the backcountry of Monument Valley. It was informative and gave a history of the Navajo tribes. The tour guide, Sandrea told good stories, had great demonstration, sang for us and was very personable. Highly recommend this tour.
