Book this, DO NOT hesitate!

Andrew_N, Mar 2026
Corey was such an amazing tour guide, between his constant jokes and attentiveness to making sure our group never broke apart- he truly made this experience worthwhile especially as a solo traveler. He explains so much of Mauis history on the scenic drives and even stopped so we can star gaze, something I’ll never forget. If you book, ask to be with Corey! He’s such a light, and took great care of all of us, took great pictures of all of individually too!

Miracle above the clouds

Corey, our tour guide provided us with a ton of history and island facts with some Dad jokes mixed in. Made it super enjoyable.

Great trip. Worth waking up really early

Paul_B, Jan 2026
Tour operator Cory was great and the sunrise was incredible . We also stopped to see the stars on the way up the mountain

Great trip to Haleakala

Reena_F, Jan 2026
This was a lot of fun. First, it was nice having someone else do the driving, and once daylight hit, I felt this even more. The road are so windy, and it was nice having an experienced driver handling it. Plus Eddie was terrific. He was entertaining, stressed the importance of safety for every aspect of the tour, and made the day very enjoyable. He even had us take a really fun picture near the summit that made us all smile.

Great sunrise tour

This was a great tour. Our guide was engaging and showed up early for pickup! We built in plenty of time (very early pickup) so there was a bit of waiting before sunrise. The breakfast was good; wish we had more time to explore Paia.

Great sunrise tour!

Great day-unreal view

STEVEN_H, Nov 2025
Spectacular views and a tour guide who was friendly and funny. The breakfast was very good and overall great day.Worth getting up for!!!

Spectacular!...but cold

Mandolen_S, Oct 2025
We had a change to our plans while in Maui and booked this tour after multiple recommendations to visit Haleakala. Cory was our driver and picked us up very early in the morning. He was very informative and funny, but also allowed time to catch some additional rest on the way to Haleakala. Definitely plan to dress a bit warmer and pick up both the jacket and pants! The top of the mountain around 6 am was very cold and windy! We got to star gaze a bit and the sunrise was spectacular!! Unfortunately, due to the government shutdown, we were not able to visit the Visitor Center, but the restrooms were still open. A bit disappointed that we didn't get to stop in Makawao or stay longer in Pa'ia, but got to see a lot of the upcountry area of Maui! There weren't a lot of options for breakfast, but it was warm and great to get some coffee after an early and cold morning!

Great trip for the sunrise

Kim_R, Sep 2025
A great trip for the sunrise. Our driver Cory even stopped on the way up for some star gasing which was really awesome.

Good tour, pick-up logistics were iffy.

Sarah_S, Sep 2025
Be aware of dates for pick-up locations. We selected our exact hotel, Viator accepted that location, and we paid. A few hours after purchase, we were contacted saying they were not picking up at our location (or even in our area) and we would need to meet them at a pick-up location. As the pick-up was at 2 AM, the only viable option was for us to rent a car (adding $120 minimum to our experience) in order to get us there. Once we arrived, the pick-up was late, so we were waiting in a random parking lot for 25 minutes, thinking we were just abandoned - no one at Viator was "contactable" as it was now 2:30 AM. Luckily, we continued waiting and the van eventually showed up. Would recommend the experience, with the caveat that you select a day the tour is pickup up in your desired location.

Great experience! I would upgrade vehicles and add some white glove touches. Coffee would have been a plus!

Long time in the dark, in a van

Brett_B, Aug 2025
$800 to spend 6-7 hours in a van with 10 people. We arrived way too early at Haleakala - almost 2 hours before sunrise, and had to sit in the dark in a tightly packed van, torture. Guide left us at top, no tour, no light, no jackets at top. Use a different company or drive yourself. Jacket and pants are a must.

Michael_S, Aug 2025
This wasn’t what we expected. We were in a mixed group with a cycling tour, was the clear focus of the tour company. We spent a lot of time listening to instructions for the bike tour. As a result we were late arriving to the summit and missed some of the color changes before sunrise. We booked this tour because it was estimated at 6 hours (unlike 10 estimates for others) but we were out of our house for close to 9 hours. I would recommend taking a dedicated sunrise tour over this experience. That said it did have its positives. The driver was pleasant and knowledgeable. The breakfast was excellent. And of course the view is once in a lifetime.

Great tour, ask for Mike!

Jennifer_W, May 2025
It was an amazing tour - especially due to our tour guide Michael R. He was a great driver, super knowledgeable and passionate about all things Maui/Hawaii!

Do it! Especially if you have jet-lag.

Alejandro_E, Mar 2025
You get up really early, get on a bus, get driven up the mountain to the highest peak, and get to watch something simply beautiful - the sunrise from the highest point on the island. You will be above the clouds and get to welcome the sun to another day. Besides seeing a sunrise, you will get a nearly 360° view of Maui, from the valley to the mountains and even the nearby islands. On your way down, you’ll get to stop at a few points for more views and pictures. Our last stop was at the restaurant for a tasty, and well deserved breakfast. Things to look out for: 1) the weather - at our resort, it was 72°, but at 6am, it was 40° and windy. Making it feel colder. 2) if it’s cold in the morning, pack extra layers. We had a stop at the “shop” (the drivers headquarters) where you can use the bathroom and grab extra coats, but we had packed additional layers. For each stop on the way up, we added layers. And remove them as we slowly came back down. 3) Also, pack gloves and scarves for extra protection against cold elements. Pack plenty of water and snacks. 4) We got picked up at our resort at 2:15 at the Westin, and weren’t back until 10am. Breakfast was around 9am, so pack snacks to hold you over. We planned this on day 1 to deal with the jet lag. It worked out perfectly.

Fantastic tour, the sights were absolutely stunning and the Tour Guide was enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable on every topic of the National Park and surrounding towns. He answered any and all questions from members of the tour and kept the trip light and fun with jokes along the way to the peak. Would highly recommend this tour if you have an early morning clear on your schedule.

Beautiful sunrise at Haleakala summit plus some stargazing before arriving. Our guide Corey was able to keep us awake (pick up 0230am) and provided useful information.

Weather was unpredictable but had fun anyway.

Robert_K, Dec 2024
We got hit with weather and couldn’t see the sunrise, but our guide, Corey, made the tour fun anyway. We stopped before to stargaze and I saw the most stars I’ve ever seen! Though I didn’t get much of a sunrise, the experience was worth it.

Once in a lifetime

Ilyse_C, Dec 2024
This trip started extremely early. We stopped on the way to the national park to star gaze. Watching the sunrise 10,000 feet above sea level was amazing! Our driver was very knowledgeable about the history and land.

Great, fun, and informative excursion

Heidi_R, Nov 2024
Corey did a great job at keeping us awake and excited for the morning! He shared great information and history of Haleakala and ensured each and every one of us had a great experience. The bus was clean and comfortable, and they gave us water/jackets to keep us healthy and warm.

Sunrise - breathtaking view

Perry_S, Sep 2024
It was truly an amazing breathtaking experience to view the sunrise at Haleakala despite waking up for the bus pickup at 2.15am at our hotel. The driver/tour guide Corey was very knowledgeable and funny making the journey up and down the crater memorable. For lunch, Corey recommended the “breakfast sandwich “, and yes, he was 100% correct - so yummy! We were back at our hotel by 10.30am - a very safe driver!

Worst experience ever!!!

Unthika_C, Sep 2024
Worst experience ever!!! I should cancel the tour since I had a feeling when I told them that I had to drive from the west to meet them because it was not the pick up day from the west, and they emailed me back to meet them at the same time at 0230 am. Even though the check in time was 30 mins after that. I assumed as long as I can go the meeting place be the end time it would be ok. I was aware that the bus won’t pick me up at the hotel. So I planned to drive to the meeting place. The time in the website mentioned that you could check in until 4 am. When the bus driver called me I asked where I could meet them at the meeting place. She gave me an address. I started driving right away. I got a phone call when I was on the way to see how long I would be there. I told the guy on the phone that I would be there in 20 minutes (That was the ETA from GPS) which would be at the office at 0352 am. The guy only kept saying I could not make it by the ETA from GPS and told me to reschedule. The Sun would rise sooner in summer, he said. But I already had plans for the next day and would leave the day after. Finally, I got there at 0355 am after I stopped twice thinking to continue going even the bus would not be there anymore or go back to the hotel to sleep. I decided to go to see when I would be at the office. I got there at 0355 am which I should be in time that it was mentioned on the website until 0400 am. Of course! I’m not surprised the bus left already. I checked the sunrise would be at 0541 am that day. After the conversation of my 10 years old daughter, she said she really wanted to see it. So I did some research and found Shaka guide. I downloaded it. Unfortunately, I needed to buy a pass to the mountain 2 days in advance. I drove to the mountain anyway. I wanted to do my best for her. We tried to find a good spot to wait for the moment of the sunrise. I can see the light reflex to the cloud from the back of the mountain. I could imagine how beautiful it would be, but not for my daughter. She didn’t have that imagination like I did. I planned to go back to Maui to see the sunrise again, but not with the tour that costed over $500 for 3 of us. With Shaka guide it costed only $29.99 + $1 for a pass to the mountain. Furthermore I don’t need to wake up super early when I don’t need to since I know I can drive to the mountain by myself with over $500 cheaper.

Response from Host, Sep 2024

Aloha, I'm sorry about your experience. I think that you have misinterpreted the check in times. Our check-in time for the summer seasons is 3:00am. our departure time from our shop in haiku is 3:30am. This gives us just enough time to get to the Summit of Haleakala for the Sunrise event, which is not just the sunrise itself, but the 45min-1hr or so of changing colors views prior to the actual specific sunrise. During the Summer months MAY-SEP, it's imperative that we leave by 3:30am, otherwise everyone on the tour misses the event. Regarding what you may have read about a 4am check in. We have seasonal check in times, meaning during the winter check-in is later, 4am. Semantically throughout the year you can say check in takes place between 3am and 4am, but www.haleakalaecotours.com does specify the following check in times: 4:00AM JAN FEB, 3:30AM MAR APR, 3:00AM MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP, 3:30AM OCT NOV, 4:00AM DEC. I hope this clarifies the check in details. Mahalo.

Best Sunrise in Maui

Rachelle_B, Aug 2024
Get some rest. Bring warm clothing. Hawaii is normally warm but not in early in the morning at the top of Haleakala

Stunning views but drive yourself and save $$$!

Shelly_B, Aug 2024
They told us the wrong pick up spot. The switch backs on the roads made us so sick. The driver talked the entire time and we couldn’t get any sleep or rest at all. I understand her wanting to talk at the end of the ride but at 2 am right when we get there was a little much. I really wish I would have driven myself. Then after I felt like I was trapped and wanted to end the tour. We skipped the breakfast at the bottom and Ubered to our car. The views at the top were stunning but I could have saved so much money and driven myself.

Unforgettable experience

robert_m, Jul 2024
Sunrise was unforgettable. Our tour guide was Eddie and he was great. Must see if you are in Maui. Loved it.
