Avoid at all cost. Poor service and infrequent buses

I am a travel advisor who brought 12 people on a tour which included the hop on bus experience. From the beginning it was a disaster and should be avoided at all costs. My purchase was for 12 guests which arrived on 1 receipt. Knowing that my guests would need individual tickets I walked almost 2 miles to be at the kiosk, guest service office upon opening. My request was to have the 12 person ticket broken into 12 individual tickets that could be used to get on the bus. The very unhelpful lady working could not assist and stated that the bus driver would be the only one who could do if. The guests were not getting on the bus at the same spot and needed their own ticket. I explained the situation to the guest support person and again she was unwilling to assist. I ended up having to purchase 12 individual tickets for each customer so they could access the bus on their own schedule and have their ticket on their phone. I paid an additional $400 to use the service. In addition, the wait for the bus was much longer than the other bus service. I would not recommend or use this company every again. Highly dissatisfied and disappointed.

I gave them 3-stars because giving 1-star is not really fair. I mistakenly purchased my ticket ahead of time. I stood at one of their stop locations for over an hour. I watched a competitor (same kind of bus) stop three times. I finally gave up and bought a ticket on the competitors bus. Just buy the ticket when you get there. There's three companies that do the same thing. I didn't ask for a refund... it's just a lesson learned.

This bus line is the only bus line we will use in the future because the audio portion was so much better than the other we used in Porto. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is that we had trouble getting on busses as they were often full with no available seats. They need more or larger busses.

I usually do hop on hop off buses to get a good idea of the city’s layout. Doing one in Lisbon is not the best way - the streets especially in Alfama and Baxia are very crowded and make for a very slow ride. I would do a TukTuk ride instead.

There were several “exceptions to note in the app and many stops didn’t not have pick up u til after 1:00 or not at all. Unfortunately our 2nd day was on May 1 and the castle line was not running at all which was really disappointing (although no fault of the bus). Also the Cascais line only runs once in the morning and once late afternoon. I couldn’t find anywhere that mentioned this so we missed out on this line as well.

The worst hop-on hop-off experience ever. I wish I could leave zero stars. Ridiculous wait times of over 60 minutes each time. Never enough seating. Poor audio quality on the headsets. Terrible, just terrible. We gave up after a few stops and ordered an Uber. It was faster, cheaper more convenient and more enjoyable.

From the cruise terminal it was very difficult to locate the correct bus. We walked to one of the stops that had been closed but we were in aware. It took over an hour for us to find and board our bus.only had time to do the new area route in Lisbon which was full of road works and building works. Not the most scenic of tours. We did not have time for the old town route which was a shame.

Better ways to get around

If you think you can use this bus as transport around the city, think again. On Saturday, the green and blue lines ran fine (we rode the full Oriente route). On Sunday, Belem (red) bus never showed up and we ended up having to Uber/walk from Pricipe Real to Belem. We didn't feel we could rely on these buses to take us to other sites or to get back to our hotel. We did take the boat but there was no tour guide or recording to tell us what we were seeing. They never even told us where the lifejackets were. I tried to reach customer support but the phone number didn’t work and by the time I got an email response, it was too late to correct anything. There was a huge event in town, but we followed all the advisories. The other Red tour bus company seemed to be running just fine.

Timing was terrible. At one stage I waited at a three route plus stop for 50 minutes before a bus arrived. Also one bus left before the time I was given. The yellow bus company seemed to have faster times between buses.

I'll start with a positive:
Loads of different lines to choose from. It's difficult to get all done in 2 days unless you are keen on missing a line out.
Cons:
- I felt the audio didn't line up with the tour and not all stops were announced meaning you missed audio or missed a stop because it potentially was announced after you took off again. I've never had this issue with City Sightseeing.
- Drivers enjoyed breaking late. On many occasions we had to hold on to prevent being thrown forward. On one occasion, the driver stopped suddenly where due care and attention wasn't being taken and a pedestrian was nearly knocked down at a pedestrian crossing. The driver had to talk to the pedestrian out the window to ensure they were ok.
- Finally the walking tour QR code wasn't working. I emailed to receive the correct link, however I received no response.

I purchased the tickets a few weeks before we traveled to Lisbon. When we got.on the Hop On Hop Off bus the tickets didn't work. We had to go to the main office and it took them about 20 minutes to issue the tickets because their readers wouldn't accept the tickets either. My advice is to buy the tickets once you are in Lisbon from the Grayline directly.

We usually do a hop on hop off in every city we visit but we regret it in Lisbon. The streets are small in Lisbon and you really don’t get to see all that much on the bus. We struggled to find seats where the audio worked. I wish I had just spent the extra money and taken a tuk tuk tour instead.

We booked online which is actually pointless as you have to redeem a voucher. Contrary to what you think it added 30 mins wait which given the heat and no shade is ridiculuous! We showed our mobile ph ticket to lady on bus and got told go to kiosk they could not scan a mobile ticket. A long line in sunshine awaited so missed the bus and had to wait 20 mins for next one. . No shade at terminus and guides have limited purpose. Eventually got on a bus nearly one hour later than planned. No earphones handed out. Came out of attraction afterwards and waited for bus citytours more frequent. Would not use grayline again

Far too many routes with nothing of real substance in terms of landmarks. Pre-recorded narrative did not specify location of landmarks - to your left, to your right, etc. Narrative was not in sync - it was either behind or ahead of landmark. There was a lot of duplication between the 4 main routes. Stops are very far apart and it’s not easy to switch from one route to another.

Get all the info on the tours first. The boat tour was one way which was ok. The orange line tour you get kicked off the bus and gave to wait about 1 1/2 hours to catch a bus back and the yellow line is a duplicate basically if the orange line, not a lot of help from some drivers , others were really helpful

Read Carefully when booking

Read carefully when purchasing package. There are multiple options. Found ourselves trying to board bus with "Hop on Hop off Boat only". The vendor devices cannot read the barcode on the Viator boarding pass. Creates all kinds of problems when boarding. Best to go to the Praça Marquês de Pombal, Lisboa, Portugal which is Central Stop 1 of all routes and check in. There are two companies using red busses and same stops This is Gray Line. You'll need the Gray Line App which isn't clear in the Viator instructions. Take a jacket for the boats.

Misleading and Poor Service

The bus never picked us up — we waited over an hour. When we finally got on, they refused our voucher. At the office, they still wouldn’t honor it and tried to charge us $30 more per person. Total misrepresentation. Not recommended.
