Hugo is an extraordinary guide who brings Alfama’s tangled history to life with clarity, wit, and genuine passion. His storytelling doesn’t just inform—it invites you to feel Lisbon’s soul.
We explored Roman ruins, Moorish alleys, remnants of the Jewish quarter, and even the defaced tiles of a fountain that once served enslaved and free residents alike. Hugo helped us see how centuries of colonization, empire, dictatorship, music, and migration have all left fingerprints on Alfama. He tied everything together so masterfully that the tour felt more like an experience than a lecture.
Hugo also introduced us to Fado—not just as a musical genre, but as an emotional inheritance shaped by longing, resilience, and diaspora. His explanation of saudade was one of the most moving moments of my time in Portugal. Add to that a chance to meet Dona Alice (a local icon who sells homemade ginjinha in chocolate cups), and it’s clear this isn’t your typical walking tour.

I loved seeing the Alfama neighbourhood in this organic way walking through and stopping at unknown sites and learning about the town and history. It's wonderful to see the history this way. Our tour guide Cláudia was wonderful. She was knowledgeable, engaging, humorous and very attentive to the needs of our group. The pace of the tour was excellent with stops in shady areas for discussion of the sites and opportunities to take pictures or use restrooms along the way.
It was a wonderful way to learn about the history and current life of Alfama.

I take back what I wrote yesterday about cancelling our tour, it was aviator/company's mistake not the tour guide. Tour got cancelled despite arriving on time. Guide told us that 6 people have cancelled and she can't have only 2 people on the tour. She then lied and told us that there's another tour the next day and we turned up and there wasn't any. Pretty poor service, lying to get out of responsibility, time wasters. Avoid and do something better with your time.

Small group of one guide and six guests. Guide spoke in English clearly and knowledgeably about Alfama Lisbon. Guide willingly answered all questions during the walk, showed us interesting aspects of the area and explained some of the history. Although we were climbing hills and steps, the guide was patient and paced the tour according to our speed.
