Mike was an incredible guide! He was funny, incredibly knowledgible, and made this such a fun experience. We really enjoyed the stories he told from the Pagan and Christian roots of this place. It absolutely opened up our minds to how these two belief systems shaped and were shaped by the Roman Empire, and how that influence is seen today. I can't recommend this tour enough!

So cool! The tour did say it had a 10 person limit, so we booked all 10 spots....they did not limit it to 10! and they combined us with more people even though we booked all 10. That kind of sucked, we were looking forward to the small group. So it is not a small group. But was still good, we could hear the guide and did not have to wear headphones to hear him. So it was still a small-ish tour experience. Our guide was able to answer all of our questions and had good stories. It was one of my favorite tours we went on. And we went on a tour every single day! No pictures are allowed inside.

Great tour for something “off the beaten path”

Our small group tour with Alessandra pleasantly turned out to be private. She was so sweet and gave us a very detailed history of the development of the catacombs, then took her time showing us through all the areas currently open to the public. She was wonderful.

After days of feeling like cattle herded through crowded Rome this tour was like a breath of fresh air. This is a perfect intimate tour where you won’t feel like you’re chasing around competing tour guides pushing through large crowds. Divan’s tour was amazing. I could have listened to him speak about the history of the catacombs for hours. We chose this shorter tour because I couldn’t imagine paying attention for longer than an hour or two but while I was on the tour I was hoping it wouldn’t end. Davin spoke quickly so if you have an adhd brain like mine it is perfect, maybe not if English is your not your first language. He explained the history of the catacombs and Rome in a way that was easy to follow and helped you grasp how extraordinary this piece of history is.

Amazing Experience

This was an amazing tour and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about Rome’s rich history! Our tour guide, Peter, was excellent! Not only did he make the tour entertaining, but he also was extremely knowledgeable. The catacombs are so fascinating to get to see up close and is something you should definitely consider doing during your next visit! Plus if you’re going in the summer it’s nice and cool down there, making the tour even more comfortable.

Horrible experience with...

Horrible experience with Viator. We booked a tour for today (reference 1278052797). We showed up 15 minuets early as requested. The tour operator did not show up and did not respond to email, text or phone calls. We submitted a refund request and Viator declined it. We will not use Viator in the future and strongly advise others to not book this tour.

We had a fantastic tour. Mike was great. He kept making Dad jokes and has a California accent, but he was the funniest guy we could possibly have had. I loved all the facts, but I also love that he showed us the map later of where we were underground when we were above ground. Highly recommend. If you’re claustrophobic, don’t do it but otherwise it’s super fun and really Educational.

John is the best

John was our guide! He was really knowledgeable and has a great silly personality that makes the tour really come to life. We started off the first 30 minutes with history of the catacombs. Then we went into the catacomb on the second floor. I would recommend this tour, just note it is only one catacomb and did not hop around to others.

Our guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and sense of humor was on point! While we enjoyed the history and the journey through the catacombs, the photo used in advertising the tour is misleading. If you're wanting to see the walls of skulls, don't book this. Look for the Capuchin Crypt.

Not worth the money….

First off, our tour guide Heather was fantastic. She was very bubbly, fun & knowledgeable. Unfortunately, the tour was mediocre. If you’re expecting bones…don’t do this tour. The photo is misleading & there are literally no bodies or bones in these catacombs. Far outside Rome & would not do again or recommend.

Canceled catacombs, no information, no update

Nothing was memorable except the euro32 taxi ride to the catacombs meeting site to discover it was closed. Other taxis arrived also. The tour operators stated they called me. They did not, no calls. In fact the day before I received a message to confirm the meeting time and place. Got to be joking you didn’t know catacombs would be closed Easter ahead of time. I called Viator asked for discount on next tour because I wasted money and time. Very disappointing.

Frescoes make it worth it

Mike is a great story teller and he knows his history. I attended this tour with my 2 teenage boys, both of whom were engaged and intellectually challenged. The highlight of this tour is being within reaching distance from some of the earliest known Christian frescoes depicting Peter and Jesus Christ. It was yet another testimony of the reality of His divinity.

This tour was amazing! If you don’t go on this tour you are really missing out. It was definitely a highlight of our trip to Rome. Our guide was OUTSTANDING. I can’t remember his name but he was from South Africa and is getting married next Month.

Absolutely loved the tour guide - Heather. Very interesting tour. I actually booked this thinking it was the Capichin crypts, it’s not. The first photo of skulls is not at the catacombs, it’s a little misleading. But I highly recommend this tour!

Catacombs Tour - Fantastic Funny Guide and Memorable Tour, Blissfully Cool Underground

We booked this tour at the last minute, and we are so glad we did! Mike was a fantastic and funny tour guide - made references from Ferris Bueller to They Might Be Giants and just told us so much in a humorous and memorable way. The rest of our tour group was a tad reserved, but the four of us traveling together thought Mike was very entertaining and made us laugh out loud. Not only that, but every story he told (and he told us a LOT of information in a short time) was infused with history and respect in regard to how the Romans handled the traditions of the early Christians and their buried dead, as well as the early Popes when transforming into a Christian community. We honestly don't know how he (and the ancient people who buried the dead or painted frescoes) did not get lost in the maze(s) of the catacombs. Incredible. Lastly, the majority of the tour takes place underground where it is blissfully cool. It was an added bonus to beat the extreme heat Italy has been experiencing this summer.
