This was a very unique tour with an archeologist as our tour guide. After a long walk through a park, we entered the catacomb area. We saw the area that it lighted with displays but also were able to explore areas that they are still working on excavating and researching. Our tour guide was fabulous and my teenager and I loved the tour.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review! I’m really glad you enjoyed both the walk through the park and the experience inside the catacombs—it’s always special to share not only the accessible areas, but also the parts still under study and excavation.
It means a lot to hear that both you and your teenager loved the tour! Making history engaging for all ages is one of my main goals.
Hope to see you again for another underground exploration in the future!

It was my wife’s 40th birthday. We decided to do all of our excursions through this app which all of the other ones were perfect, except this one. We went to the waiting point, which happens to be right behind some dumpsters at a coffee shop. We waited there for about 45 minutes. No one showed up. We had a lot of phone calls back-and-forth after we had to do some heavy researching on who we talk to I highly recommend you not use this particular tour.
Response from Host, Sep 2025
We're very sorry for the inconvenience. The reason we didn't show up was not our fault but a series of circumstances.
The tour was requested at the last minute, and when the request arrived, we didn't have access to email.
This is a complaint we've already reported to Viator. As hosts, not having an app that notifies bookings leaves us vulnerable to last-minute bookings if we don't have access to email.
We're deeply sorry for this and apologize. Marco.

This great tour was culturally enriching! It was so refreshing to finally have an experience that was so much above the usual blended material offer to mass tourism. Riccardo was very knowledgeable and passionate about sharing such great knowledge in a very interesting and interactive manner. I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking at a tailored experience out of the beaten path!
Response from Host, Mar 2025
Hello, thank you for appreciating our experience and for understanding the spirit of offering real archaeology, outside of commercial products.
We are glad you had enjoyed it.
Grazie, Marco

Our guide Joseph was wonderful and very knowledgeable. We expected to be seeing the underground Roman tunnels through the city. We did not. We saw a rock quarry and an old mushroom farm. Air quality was poor, long walk to entrance, nothing super special.
Response from Host, Mar 2024
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the experience. what you call a rock quarry is a system of tunnels dug by the Romans and reused in the last century as mushroom farms. you have entered the system of catacombs of the second century AD, you have visited a mithraeum and drank mulsum, the Roman wine according to Apicius' recipes... I wouldn't know what else to do with you.

Joseph took us back to a time and place that we had previously not known about. As an archeologist his knowledge was exceptional and he made it easy to imagine living and working in ancient times. The work he and his group are doing here is remarkable and should soon receive UNESCO status. Bravo to all involved in this project

We unfortunately could not do tour as our tour guide did not arrive. We requested a refund. It is a, pity as we were really looking forward to it.
Response from Host, Jun 2024
I'm sorry, but if you not do the tour, why one star?
Mark_D, Sep 2023
We had to walk 45 minutes to get to the underground part. The tour in it was just okay. It got a little monotonous because everything looks the same. The paintings are modern since they were never there in the fist place.
Response from Host, Jun 2024
Hi, the Roman quarries are ancient, as are the catacombs and the mushroom farms,
But haven't you visited them?

This was a very interesting tour, definitely not a typical Rome tour. Our guide, Riccardo was terrific, extremely knowledgeable and we learned a lot. It was really hot in Rome that day, so was nice to go underground, where we did get chilly and ended up putting a jacket on about half way through the tour.
It is a long walk to get to the entrance, so recommend taking a taxi or Metro ride to meet the guide and not doing a ton of walking ahead of time.
Response from Host, Aug 2023
Thank you for liking our site. It is a unique place because in Rome you will not find a bigger underground so full of history.
I will pass on your compliments to Riccardo and we hope one day to be able to host you in another of our experiences.
Thank you.

After a walk through an unexpectedly large park we came to the cave entrance. It was much colder and very damp inside so bring a jumper. Our very knowledgeable guide showed us how the ancient Roman slaves had dug out the cave. Where they had dug little seats, inspection wells. We saw the results of collapsing walls and ceilings. We turned off our torches and stood in the pitch black dark while he told us about Roman burial traditions. We then explored using little oil lamps like the Roman’s would have used. Ended up with some ‘mousa’ wine with honey and spices that the Roman nobility would have drunk. And saw an example of a Mithraem. It was a fascinating tour. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

We had a wonderful tour with Daniella and Roberto! They were very knowledgeable and made our tour very special!
Response from Host, May 2023
Thanks guys, it was a pleasure to host you and show you our underground riches.

This was an amazing experience shared with varied generations of our family some of whom we do not see often anymore. Surprisingly the extensive history associated with the site changed drastically over time and our tour guide, Maurizio, who spoke Spanish, English, and Italian throughly conveyed the historical data in creative detail. I would recommend this tour as a must experience while in Rome. A short distance away from the usual tourist attractions by metro.
Response from Host, May 2023
thank you for participating in our experience and especially for the nice review.
Our guides are researchers and our research activities are financed thanks to your participation.
Thank you, see you soon.

Giuseppe was an excellent guide and very knowledgeable. This tour was a great opportunity for us to visit a part of Rome very few other people see, and it felt like we were getting to tour an archeological site where new discoveries were being made all the time. We were particularly blown away by the catacombs, and it's no wonder that this area will likely be part of a UNESCO Heritage Site someday soon. If you're looking for something unique to do in Rome, we'd highly recommend this tour!

Thank you very much for your review.
I hope to see you again in the future.

Grazie, Amedeo e Iuliia
Response from Host, Apr 2023
Grazie ragazzi, è stato un vero piacere conoscervi e passare qualche ora insieme.
Un abbraccio e a presto. Marco.
