Disappointing Experience
I recently took a tour with Stefano, who was super friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. However, the overall experience was quite disappointing. The company car, meant for 4 adults, was small but clean. The real letdown was the visit to the catacombs. They were very disappointing, as we only saw holes in the wall and found out that the tombs had been moved. Essentially, these are empty catacombs with nothing to see but dirt, rock, and holes.
Additionally, the catacombs themselves were not pleasant. The group was twice the size it should have been, and we could not hear the guide. There was a Spanish group that rudely pushed into the tail of our English group, creating a disappointing interaction and distraction.
While the driver was good and drove us around to show us sights on the list, it felt more like a taxi service than a guided tour, especially at this price point. We paid $187.14 per person, which felt like a huge waste of money considering the actual tour of the catacombs was only 10 euros. In hindsight, I feel like we were taken advantage of. This experience taught me to do more research before spending a significant amount of money on a tour. I will definitely be more cautious in the future and would never book this tour again. Really disappointed.
Per our request, he dropped us off at a great restaurant that he recommended instead of taking us back to the hotel. We absolutely loved this tour!

We understand your concern regarding the size of the vehicle. A standard sedan is correctly used for private tours for up to 4 persons and complies with the tour specifications. However, we acknowledge that for some travelers, a full sedan may feel cramped, and we appreciate this feedback.
The Catacombs Experience
We are genuinely sorry that the actual visit to the Catacombs was an "underwhelming" and "disappointing" experience. You are correct that the Catacombs, by their nature, are ancient underground burial tunnels. Their historical significance lies in the fact that they are empty "holes in the wall"—the original resting places of early Christians and martyrs—as the remains and major relics were moved to churches (Basilicas) in the city centuries ago for safekeeping. We regret that this historical context was not clear enough to manage your expectations before entry.
Furthermore, the issues you raised regarding the conditions inside are unacceptable:
Overcrowding and Audio: The Catacombs are operated by external site management, and the group sizes and guiding are unfortunately beyond our direct control. The situation with the group being "twice the size it should have been" and the resulting inability to hear the guide, compounded by the distraction from other groups, completely ruined the atmosphere and educational value. We are taking this up with our local partner immediately.

We understand your frustration about the high per-person price versus the nominal site entrance fee. We want to clarify the price breakdown for a private tour with a private driver-guide:
The cost is for the **exclusive private service** provided by Stefano, which includes:
1. A **5-Star Private Driver-Guide** for 3 hours.
2. **Private, air-conditioned transportation** for 3 hours.

Appian Way was gorgeous. The catacombs were fascinating. Seeing the footprints of Jesus at Santa Maria of Palmis was a touching moment. St Paul’s Cathedral was breathtaking.

The catacombs your was very interesting. Full of new to me knowledge of the roman underground burials. We also visited St. Paul Basillica. Thst was beautiful and full of religious history. Well worth the time and money.

The catacombs were totally unique and should not be missed. Be sure to ask a lot of questions! They have tours in dozens of languages.

This is a perfect way to see a beautiful part of Rome, especially during the warmer summer months! Lorenzo was a great driver/guide, and it was nice to have such easy transportation to the catacombs and the Appian Way during the heat of the day. Had the best tour guide (Patrick) he is with Top Tour Experiences , he was awesome came to our hotel and picked us up , and we saw more than just what the Tour was offering. He was very incredible with knowledge. I would just go through top tour and don’t go through the roundabout way to get to them. That’s who’s gonna come pick you up top tour so save your money and just go to Top Tour
When we come back to Rome, that is only people we will do our excursion service is top tour. They’re worth it and it’s worth the private tour. It’s worth them coming to pick you up personally instead of having to go to a big area and look for them so top tour that’s my pic.

This tour advertises a different experience than the one that is offered. Private driver was excellent, but DO NOT BOOK THIS TOUR if you are trying to see the Appian Way, or the aqueducts. This tour was a transfer to the catacombs of Saint Callisxtus and the group tour which is available if you go there yourself. I do not recommend this tour. We have some mobility issues so we took this tour to insure our ability to visit this area with secure transportation. However, the high price point for this tour is not justified. Our driver was excellent and this is not a reflection of his service.

The driver was friendly but very hard to understand. The catacomb tour was very good and the guide spoke very good English, but no pictures were allowed inside which we weren't appraised of beforehand. Also,we had to purchase our own tickets, although the driver did reimburse us. He took me to a second set of catacombs, but they were closed. We were supposed to see two churches. One we drove by and just got a picture. The other, the basilica,we did stop at but it was closed also, so only outside pictures were taken. Maybe I was expecting something different, but the Appian Way was just a cobblestone street with buildings on both sides. I kind of thought it would be more of a massive road with fields on either side...maybe further out??? Overall, it seems the cost of the tour is just for a private car and not really a 'guided' tour, making it seem quite overpriced!

The catacombs are owned by the Vatican, and as with many sacred sites, photography is not permitted inside — a rule that is clearly enforced for religious and preservation reasons. This is common across many holy places in Rome.
As stated in our tour description, the visit includes one catacomb, and while we understand the desire to see more, the additional site you were taken to was unfortunately closed — something outside of our control, but we appreciate your understanding.
Your driver is part of our highly rated team (average 4.9 stars) and did his best to ensure you were reimbursed promptly for any ticket confusion. Our driverguides are trained to offer historical context and hospitality throughout the journey.
The Appian Way, while perhaps different from what you envisioned, is indeed one of the most historically important Roman roads, built over 2,300 years ago. The area you visited is the best-preserved stretch open to vehicles — a remarkable part of Rome’s ancient infrastructure, even if it now coexists with modern development.
Regarding the churches: the Basilica of St. Paul was in fact open yesterday, and we regret if any miscommunication led to a missed visit inside. The tour does include visits to two churches when open and accessible, though occasional closures can happen without notice.
Finally, we’d like to note that 3 out of 4 tours yesterday rated it 5 stars, and we continuously strive to offer meaningful and respectful experiences.

The catacombs were interesting but the group size was a little to large st the site given the close quarters. The facility guide was hard to hear on many occasions. The graves themselves ws wuite interesting.
The Appian Way was kind of special being the first paved road in the world.
St. Paul’s Basilica (second only to St. Peter’s) is quite spectacular and visiting during the Jubilee made it even more special.
Guide was excellent but the vehicle was too small for four people.

The catacombs themselves are owned and managed by the Vatican, and the official site guides are often priests or religious staff, which may occasionally impact the style or clarity of the presentation.
Regarding the vehicle: your original booking was for 2 guests and was later amended to 4. Since the assigned guide and Mercedes E-Class vehicle were already scheduled, we did our best to accommodate the change while keeping the quality of the service consistent. For larger groups, we typically assign a Minivan, and we appreciate your feedback in helping us fine-tune these arrangements.

We were a little disappointed in this tour. We were picked up by our guide Alessandro in his vehicle that smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and taken to the catacombs of Calixtus. He bought our tickets and left us in line to go for the tour. Our guide there was excellent. He then drove us to see the old road of the Appian Way (a very short drive.) He offered to take us to see St. Paul's Outside the Walls which we did. We felt he was more of a driver than a tour guide. He had a lot of information to convey but his English was not as good as expected. I think the title of the tour is misleading and the cost was too much for what was offered.

We cannot say enough about our guide George, he went above and beyond showing us beautiful places one would not normally see.
Disappointed by the Catacombs they were just okay. Group way too big and very hard to understand when your English speaker doesn’t speak English very well.
George took us to view other sites that you would normally not see. The first road which was amazing, an overview of the city, to a beautiful churches and through neighborhoods one would not see.
The final was a church that was so breathtaking, detailed in marble, Gold and huge. Was able to see the door that was only ever been open for the Pope, needless to say that it was one of the most detailed and beautiful churches we have ever seen and it was so humbling.
We cannot say enough good things about George and his knowledge and we will inform everyone we know that’s to visit to contact him if they truly want history.

Over $700 euros for a party of five for a group tour that actually costs 10 euros according to the entrance ticket. It’s advertised as private tour but is just a private transfer which would not set you back $700 in a Uber. Save money take an Uber and do the group tour

Patrick is a great guide we had a wonderful experience in the catacombs and along the Appian way. The catacombs are amazing
and even though extensively restored, are well worth visiting especially with a guide as knowledgeable as Patrick

Our guide Patrick made our tour fun and informational. He stopped several times to take pictures. He even made a couple extra stops along our tour and gave us an interesting narrative on ancient Rome. Great tour!

We had a wonderful time with Patrick visiting the Catacombs of Callixto, the Appian Way, and a few other nearby sites. It was great to get off the beaten path to see some parts of Roman history that don't make it onto the city center tour itinerary and were not overwhelmed with tourists.

The catacombs tour was short, yet interesting. The 5 stars is for our tour guide, Giorgio, who was absolutely amazing. Since we had extra time, he took us to a few locations around Rome that were not filled with other tourists. He was so informative, professional and fun. Highly recommend their services.

The itinerary was seeing Catacombs of Saint Callixtus, Arcibasilica di San Giovanni in Laterano
and Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.
We went to the first one and we were told we have time to visit a couple of sites and because we had time so we visited 2 other sites then at the end of it we were told we were done and we did not even get to see what was on the itinerary
