Fabulous culinary (and history) walking tour. Hit all the Maine highlights, most specifically the seafood chowder and also lobster rolls. Learned a lot about Portland and its history along the way. The food portions were much more substantial than just "tastes" and each was a treat in its own right. Highly recommended.

Ray was a great tour guide, and definitely gave us an authentic experience! The exposure to the different chowders (seafood chowder was incredible!) and the lobster roll with seasonal beer were fantastic. I also love a great dessert, and we had a few. Thanks Ray for the great Portland history and food origin stories!

Awesome Experience

Superb! Ray was our guide and is very well versed in the local food culture. He knows his stuff and where all the great food is located around Portland. Our first stop was Andy’s Old Port Pub where we enjoyed Haddock tacos and their house made beer. Excellent fresh fish! We then stopped for some, what else, chowder at Gilbert’s Chowder House. I enjoyed the seafood chowder, while my wife took in the chicken corn chowder. (BTW, if anyone in your party doesn’t like seafood, let the tour know in advance and they will work to accommodate. We didn’t know this was an option but my wife took it like a champ letting me enjoy the seafood). The chowder was the best I’d ever had. We then went to Rigby Yard and had lobster rolls. Yes they were amazing! We stopped by Dean’s Sweets for a couple of chocolates and topped it off with gelato at Gelato Fiasco. Each stop was amazing and had its own unique offering. Ray made the day with his knowledge of the area, the local fare and industry. We could not have asked for a better tour.

Culinary Tour de Force of Portland

While each tour may differ, we had Chuck who took us on an amazing tour. No matter where you stop, you are going to have some incredible food. For us, the five stops were: Andy's Pub with haddock tacos, Gilbert's Chowder House with (you guessed it) chowders (the blueberry ale is optional at this stop - but not really - you should definitely order it even though it costs extra here), then Gritty's with a delightful lobster roll, followed by Dean's Sweets for 2 truffle selections (my husband tried the Moxy - you should too), and finally Gelato Fiasco (we highly recommend the blueberry crisp and Sweet Resurgam as your two choices). Not only does this tour highlight the incredible food scene in Portland, you also get a healthy dose dose of history and culture. Not only will you enjoy the tour, you should ask for suggestions of places to visit and food establishments to sample all around Maine, because our guide Chuck was chock-full of fantastic ideas. It was actually a little hilarious since we kept running into other people from our tour as we went to other area attractions over the next day.

History with good food At the end of the tour we were each handed a card with the tour info and suggested minimum tip of $29 for each person. Tipping in America has gotten out of hand in my opinion

Just finished the Portland food tour with Timothy. Every stop was top notch with 3 excellent food stops and accompanying drink. Topped off with a chocolate store and ice cream. Timothy gave us great history and insight into Portland, Maine’s coastline, and the lobster and fishing industry. Highly recommend.

Good Tour but not Exceptional

Jill_G, Jun 2026
Tim the guide was great and excellent. Started out great with first two stops but the stop with lobster roll was average at best and not anything unusual about Portland. Could be much better unique places to pick. Additionally, In my opinion, slightly overpriced.
